looks like fun testing that out . im surprised how the difference between 300 and 800mm wasn't as much as I expected from such a colossal lens. I couldn't help think a faster 300mm cropped in may be more practical and give similar results.
No, it wouldn't. I do know what you mean - when you see the zoom movement it might not seem like that much. But it really is a good difference. But admittedly, for most people, including me, the 300mm is really the only affordable option!
Interesting review as always! but I do wonder how you were able to take a photo of that test chart and grid at 800mm, I'd imagine you'd have to be very very insanely far away
Sigma 50-500/4-6.3 with 1.5xTC comes near and is way cheaper. When used on good tripod, the resulting aperture is not a big deal, because shutter speed can be lowered to maintain low ISO.. Other option is Sigma 100-300/4 with 2xTC. 600mm is quite near in reach and still maintaining wery usable image quality and usable F8 aperture equivalent, but result is waaaay less expensive, still hand-heldable on camera with IBIS. Crop camera with this combo gives simillar result like 450-900/8 lens (virtual F12 in terms of depth of field) on FF camera. Not to mention more recent Sig 150-600 Sport or 120-300/2.8 lenses :) Also you can use Olympus m4/3 cameras. With these enjoying the 2x crop factor and dense-pixel sensors using the best central part of lenses. There is one lens like this beast, that is sharp across all frame.. it is the Pentax FA*250-600/5.6.. but it costs even more than this Sig300-800.
Christopher Frost Photography Yeah, I know it's basically you get what you pay for, but to think that you can get 2560mm equivalent on APS-C for couple hundred bucks is crazy!
+Christopher Frost Photography yeah, a review for that lens would be cool, as there isn't one as cool as yours for that thing! i was planning a trip to Namibia and Botswana, and i looked for some good telephoto lens on a budget for some wildlife shots. That lens interested me but i'm really concerned about the aperture. f8 seems pretty dark for shooting animals! Hope you could clear the minds of your followers with one of your beautiful reviews!
Great review, thanks! But don’t you think the “centering problem” @ 800mm f/5.6 comes from the way to close distance? I bet center-focusing at double the distance solves that problem right away...
Long telephoto lenses can be a challenge. I have an old Takumar 200mm f3.5 manual lens, it has about 355 degree focus throw and even that can be a challenge to get precise enough, since the last 20-30 degrees or so covers quite a long meter range before infinity. From 15 meters to 50 meters, not easy to focus when it's such a far range in such a small area.
Now that truly is a monster. Really needed image stabilisation though, especially at those really long focal lengths, but being an older lens I can't complain. 1:36 hair on the sensor! (which reminds me I need to clean my cameras sensor!) Very well done review as always.
The hair has been cleaned away now hehe :-) actually it wasn't on the sensor, it was trapped in the mirror mechanism just in front of it which caused it to be as visible as it is. Guy in the shop said it's very unusual for that to happen
Bilbiz8 Well I find, especially with telephoto lenses that having stabilisation, even on a tripod can help, especially on long zoom ranges and using with cameras that exhibit some rolling shutter issues.
Gimbal all the way for this lens. I tried out a brand new one at Birdfair 2018 at the Sigma stall. Its awesome but I doubt this is a lens where IS could be used at all. 6 pounds spread out over half a metre is a lot of weight, I doubt I could manage 10 minutes handholding this thing unless I was a bodybuilder. I can manage 45 mins to an hour handholding the Sigma 150-600c if I use it often enough. Its actually quite physically draining when I first started using it the first few times or if I haven't used it for a while. The contemporary weighs over 2 pounds and the Sigma Sport 3 pounds, a lens people complain about for being too heavy. The Sigmonster is double the weight of the Sport. Its a lense I'd definite use for far distance wildlife hides where there are rare birds or ones that scare easily. It would also be a great safari lens lmo. Ive seen a few copies going online for about 2k, which is a total bargain if its in good condition. But IS no. I never use IS on the contemporary for birds in flight simply because its not designed for shutter speeds above around 1/800th second. But f5.6 is probably on the cusp of being fast enough to use a slightly slower shutter speed than average to freeze action. f5.6 at 800mm is absolutely awesome tbh. Imagine that coupled to a Sony A7III/R/A9 with its AF system and resolution.
Nice review, good video, although I think you had a lesser copy of this lens, as you suggested. I actually own this lens. I bought it when it was the Mark 1 version and now have the Mark 2 version, and I can honestly say that it is really nicely sharp even at F5.6 on my 7D, and its totally razor-sharp at F8. I have taken a lot of very nice images with this lens.Admittedly, its bloody heavy and a pain to carry around, but I was well aware of this when I bought it. Its definitely not a carry-around lens, more of an ambush/hide lens in which it excels. The image quality makes the effort to get it to location more than worthwhile for me! :-)I definitely recommend a large beanbag at least, and/or a sturdy tripod, but looking at it positively, what a great excuse to keep fit and the price of it will more than pay for itself regarding gym fees!
when was a mark 2 of this lens released? And what upgrades does the mark 2 have? And how do I find if a used copy is mark 1 or 2? I own a Sigma 150-600 S, but would like to get a used 300-800, particularly for filming wildlife. Do you think the image quality on the 300-800 mark 2 is comparable to the 150-600 Sports?
Kind of crazy that nowadays, we can have an 800mm lens weighs less than 3 lbs, costs less than $1k, and with the advent of modern mirrorless bodies, can actually get good focus with F11 ! I've taken about 130K shots with a 1280mm combo in the last 15 months, and it feels completely normal to me.
@@classic.cameras birds, of course :) Pretty common for me to go and shoot 1000-1500 frames a trip, and I shoot many days per year. Honestly, I think I'm at 200K now.

I appreciate the review. These have come down significantly in price. I have seen them in the $2000-$3000 range in my area of the US (Pennsylvania). This seems like a fun lens and definitely a great talking point, but not for me. Thanks to your review, I will be going with a Sigma 60-600 instead. I enjoy being able to hand-hold/walkaround as much as possible. Much appreciated.
Awesome video! So nice to see a modern review of one of these old monsters! Please try to find the Sigma 200-500 f2.8 to review. You will be the only one on youtube to do it. Also it would be so nice to see a competent reviewer like you take a look at this monster. I hear it`s great for handheld bird photography :)
In the middle it looked better at 600mm than 300mm but the 800mm was very disappointing. The lack of image stabilisation is also disappointing when you consider the price of this lens. Nice review anyway!
I'd use rather the 120-300 f2.8 and add on a 2xtc. Combine it with the nikon d500. And I get 900mm f 5.6. Or 1.4 tc a rather attractive 630 mm f4. That'sa cheaper option. Curious about the the IQ with the 1.4x tc.
This lens will still work on a Sony camera via Sigma MC-11 adapter. It should even work in video. Prior to that adapter it had trouble working on newer Canon EF cameras.
I have just bought a prinz 500mm lens with a x2 prinz converter and on a crop camera. So around 1500mm. I paid £70 off eBay. Expecting an absolute load of rubbish I’m amazed the photo are not far off my canon lens. Not as sharp of course. But the difference is not intergalactic given the price difference.
I would love to hehe. Actually, when I was in Korea shooting a documentary about the church out there, one came up for sale in Seoul on eBay, and I was thinking of contacting the seller to ask if I could just take a look at it - but I couldn't fit it into the schedule and I would have had to travel across the country (and the seller looked a little dubious, too)
A very interesting review, but did you know Sigma also had a 800mm f/5.6 prime? In fact, the prime is now slightly cheaper than the zoom. You can get it for less than half the price of the current Canon 800mm f/5.6. It would be fantastic if you could do a review on the Sigma 800mm f/5.6 too if possible.
Hi Christopher. Is there any chance of going back to using the building as your lens quality test? I have a bit more difficulty seeing and understanding how the lenses are performing on the new picture. Thanks for all your work. God bless.
The test chart seems pretty clear to me; in fact, it shows a lens's contrast and chromatic aberration a lot more clearly. I would like to go back to using the building but unfortunately I live miles away from it now. All the best :-)
On an APS-C sensor, you must be moving backward to get the same framing as on a full frame one, right? Might the lower performance be related to this greater distance, instead of the pixel pitch?
Chris, One suggestion: Test these Chinese lenses: Zonlai 25mm f1.8 or Meike 50mm f2.0, I think both lenses are reasonably good for the price. I own both lenses more people should be using them, I bought the Fuji mount version and very compact on any Fuji camera. You will be pleasantly surprised.
No, they're really designed for Canons 'Big Whites', lenses that are extremely sharp. Using a 2x converter, even on a sharp zoom like the 70-200mm f/2.8 ii reduces the image quality significantly. You're better off getting the latest 1.4 x converter if you really need to get one (or just use your lenses on a 1.6 crop body). In short, image quality will take quite a knock, your effective aperture will narrow and your focus speed will drop. and you may end up manually focusing if the native aperture range (and the cameras focusing limitations) is too narrow i.e. the 7d mark ii will autofocus at f/8 (if you're using an f/4 lens with a 2x converter) but only on the centre af point, other cameras will differ. If you're after a long reach at a reasonable price I recommend the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens, it's great.
can you test the canon 18-135mm nano usm and compare it to the stm version? I want to now if it is a good lens for my canon eos 70d or if the stm version is alredy enoufh
Could you please review the tamron 70-200mm f2.8? I think many people would like to see YOUR review on that lens. (I know there might be reviews on youtube, but I don't think someone else has so good, detailed and precise reviews with sample images for different tests... most of them just give their personal opinons on the gear they review.
Christopher, I was in Brighton last Tuesday and browsing a local camera shop. In the window for sale was a Sigma AF APO 1000mm F8 lens Nikon F mount, for a very reasonable price. I tested it on several Nikon cameras, film and digital. In the film versions, the focusing was fast. What I have found about the lens was good reviews in AP 1992. Do you no any more on this lens. Is it rare as hen's teeth? If you think the lens in your review is big. This a giant prime At the moment I am running the lens on a Samsung NX1 with a Nikon adaptor and the results are good for the age of this lens. As with your TH-cam video the wind and vibration effect the end resukt.
I am writing to Sigma to see if they have any information on this lens. How many were made? When the last one was made as this lens and case look as they have hardly been used. I got this for the eclipse of the moon last Friday. But because the weather was bad no luck. If you give me an email I will send some photos
Just curiosity... to see a lens like that is already incredible but are you having a coffee on the neighbour's neighbour to shoot the chart? As always best lens review.
like always, a very good review... It just miss something : the higher F stop before image quality decrease... Your were doing this test before, but since few months, you don't give that information anymore. Don't stop testing!^^
On a 20mp full-frame camera it's normally noticeable when you stop down narrower than f/11. On an 18mp APS-C camera it's normally noticeable just beyond f/8. But yes, every lens is different so I'll try and make a note of that next time
Yes that is generally the case but remember the Samyang 100mm f2.8 Macro, sharp untill f22! a half dream for all macro photographer^^ Thank you for your listening^^

Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds 100-400 has an effective focal length range of 200-400, is under 8" long, weighs under 1kg, and has effective Dual IS in combination with a modern Panasonic body, plus it's optically excellent. All this talk of "OMG, 800MM!!!" makes me laugh. With Micro Four Thirds, you can carry a 45-200 (90-400 EFL) the size of a soda can in a coat pocket. There's also a very affordable 100-300 that's not much bigger. Yeah, less total light gathering, but in good light, who cares? And, did I mention IMAGE STABILIZATION?
Not much better than the MTO 1000A at f/11 @7:20. Not that I expect prime-grade performance from an ultra-tele at full reach, but still, the old Soviet mirror lens holds its own. (see Chris Frost's yt video " W0G28qggxYM " )

Thank you
+Foto4Max thank you very much
can you test the canon 18-135mm nano usm and compare it to the stm version? I want to now if it is a good lens for my canon eos 70d or if the stm version is alredy enoufh
When I have a new APS-C camera, yes
+Christopher Frost Photography I've been also wondering how well it performs since I bought it with my 80D
Go out and try it! :-)
+Christopher Frost Photography from what I've been seen so far, it seems to have a surprising amount of CA, however it's pretty sharp even wide open.
@@thegeforce6625 any more thoughts on the lens after using it for 2 years?
Could you please review the tamron 70-200mm f2.8? I think many people would like to see YOUR review on that lens. (I know there might be reviews on youtube, but I don't think someone else has so good, detailed and precise reviews with sample images for different tests... most of them just give their personal opinons on the gear they review.
Thanks for the compliment! I'll try to take a look at it when I have a new Canon APS-C camera to test on.
+Christopher Frost Photography thanks, blessings.
Nikon P900 2000mm equivalnce will work out
Hey Chris do you think you'll get round to reviewing the Sigma 24 - 105 f/4 lens? You're my go to guy for reviews.
I already have :-)
Christopher, I was in Brighton last Tuesday and browsing a local camera shop.
What an interesting lens! I've never seen it before
I am writing to Sigma to see if they have any information on this lens. How many were made? When the last one was made as this lens and case look as they have hardly been used. I got this for the eclipse of the moon last Friday. But because the weather was bad no luck. If you give me an email I will send some photos
Hi Christopher, Nice review. Can you please Review Sigma 150-600 C And S Lens
I'd love to but I'm saving up for a new test camera right now
:( ..Thanks for the reply man! Keep up the good work (Y)
Just curiosity... to see a lens like that is already incredible but are you having a coffee on the neighbour's neighbour to shoot the chart? As always best lens review.
can you review the oshiro 135mm f2.8... it's 180$ USD might be a great deal
Hmm haven't really heard of that one
www.amazon.com/Oshiro-135mm-Telephoto-Digital-Cameras/dp/B017TCOS7W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465604288&sr=8-1&keywords=oshiro+135mm
did you use a 1dx mkll to test it.......one day mate
any review for sigma 500mm F4?
Maybe one day :-)
Would this be a good selfie lens 😃?
Perfect for Vlogging.
@@classic.cameras 😂
Compared to own brand super tele lens, 5k isn't that bad really, shame I still can't afford one though 😔
like always, a very good review...
But yes, every lens is different so I'll try and make a note of that next time
Yes that is generally the case but remember the Samyang 100mm f2.8 Macro, sharp untill f22! a half dream for all macro photographer^^
Thank you for your listening^^
Nah this stopped being a SigMonster years prior to this video when they released 200-500 F2.8
So how does Nikon manage to get such a long focal range with it's p900?
It has a tiny little image sensor
1:55 "or even extreme portrait work"
suuuuurrrreeee
Can I use in canon 80D
Yup
There is a APO version right?
On looking at the footage I can see an 'APO' on the front, so yes :-)
+Christopher Frost Photography oops I didn't see that, I thought there was two different version
Sigma lenses problem that it is very slow in focus for moving objects compare with canon , so still foggy lens unlike canon zoom telephoto or prime telephoto lenses
the video won't load, not sure why
Think I may just leave this minnow for others to enjoy!
I prefer a 100-400 or 150-600 , just because of image stabilizer
I'm very happy with my 150-500mm
No image stabilizer ?
Nope
Please review Sigma and Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 :)
When I can get hold of a new Canon camera, I'll see :-)
Where did you purchased it?
Haha, I didn't - I hired it
Please Test the Sigma 200-500 2.8 ;)
Send me over a copy ;-)
So it costs like £1 per gram in weight
Turn it around, and make it macro lens!
Honestly £5.5k isn't as bad as what I was expecting
which is the best lav mic (to record speech) for my canon 700d? please let me know
wow!! Massive lens..800mm? omg!
Arny would shoot this thing from the hip and still nail the focus.
You should test Sigma 200-500mm F/2.8 :)
Sure! Send me one over :-)
Not much better than the MTO 1000A at f/11 @7:20. Not that I expect prime-grade performance from an ultra-tele at full reach, but still, the old Soviet mirror lens holds its own. (see Chris Frost's yt video " W0G28qggxYM " )
MTO 1000's actual aperture is about f/16.
If you do not want to talk with your model that's the right lens for you ;-)
All i want to know is how do u capture those fast moving birds with this monster? i follow you on Facebook by the way.
It's hard work! Just practice, really.
Is this a computer generated voice?
Is that a computer generated question?
What a monster!
are you on Instagram?
the earth is not flat enough to fully utilize the bokeh of this lens
SORRY TO RED PILL YOU BUT THE EARTH *IS* FLAT MY FRIEND!!!!!
...LOL JK
