Clausing Colchester 15" Triumph 2000 headstock rebuild and improvements

  • I have just finished the rebuild of my headstock, and thought I'd upload a quick video. These are good lathes when they work, but seemingly suffer from a few design "issues" and don't take kindly to a general lack of maintenance. I got all my bearings from eBay, and all my parts from GPS engineering in the UK - best prices in the world, and very fast delivery.

Excellent vid. One idea, if the top oil tray bothers you, would be to cover with a fine metallic mesh. That would keep crud out but allow it to still ooze.

Thanks for showing us the oil passages....I'm concerned about plugging and starvation. Your coastal brand appeared milky and not as clear as the shell product...but a filter is key to prevent crap from being circulated....

As I recall, I've seen shaft keys used as a safety to shear off in the case of catastrophic failure, or a crash with the chuck. The two keyways could mean that one was a spare. You might be able to tell from the parts manual.
Speaking of filters, I have one on my parts washer that is a home water filter with wound yarn that is available in capacity down to one micron. Normally I would not need one so fine except to try to filter out soot from Diesel engine oil, which it did to some extent. I like the ability to see what the oil and sediment looks like. Got it at HD in the water filter section. I added a second one in case the fine one became restricted. No discernible deterioration of the plastic in maybe five years of use with mineral spirits.

Toby W that's good information. The "depth media" filters you describe are the daddies for fine filtration for sure, but for oil you need high pressure to work with the filter, and even then the throughput is low. I consider the addition of any filter way improved over the original setup.
As regards the keyway, I've never heard of these being used as an intended shear device; pins yes, but not keys. Irregardless, the manual calls for two keys. I've since learnt that this is simply a bad design that affects many of these lathes, even those with two keys. Should have used a taperlock from the outset, or a longer shaft the full length of the pulley width, to eliminate the cantilevering of the pulley on the shaft. luckily Colchester made this shaft a tickle over 1" so it's easy to machine down and fix their mistake.

TD16V, the 1 micron yarn filters were used in a parts washer that could be blocked with the thumb, so back pressure is not an issue until the filter starts to stop up. I kept an assortment of filters depending on how dirty the parts were. Filters were were about $2 as I recall. I cleaned general auto parts so there was plenty of grit to deal with.

Really enjoyed this video. I've just had an incident with my colchester that produced smoke and a dump of oil on the floor. Any idea how much trouble I'm in for?

If you Google ‘ Colchester triumph 2000 manual ‘ you’ll find the manual on the motofaction website - and other places… There are a few groups, including the ‘ Colchester and Harrison lathe owners ‘ facebook group you can try.

hi. I have a triumph 2000 that have high whining bearing noise in forward rotation and much less in reverse. The noise is not present when clutches not are engaged. The noise is still present when I put the gear changer so that no gear is engaged, not so much but it's there. The noise is not worse with high rpms that on low. So the question is, what bearings are bad in my gearbox? is it the J-shaft or H-shaft bearing on the forward side thats gone?

Hello . Bought recently saw Triumph 2000 but it does not have gears for threading, found on Ebay can not. Are you able to give the size of your gears, I'll try to make them myself.

I scoured eBay for a few weeks and picked up all the bearings (except for the spindle bearings) over several different listings for less than $120 including shipping. These were all SKF new-old-stock stuff too, not Chinese junk.
