    Most mobile phone numbers form the larger carriers (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile) can be ported to Google Voice, while it seems that only some prepaid phone numbers are portable.
    The best way to determine if your phone number can be ported to Google Voice is to type your number and check at www.google.com...
    The porting process took me 24 hours with AT&T, but I suspect other carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile will be just as quick.

    Thanks for this video. My husband and I plan to move next year to Portugal so I'm looking at this as well as Google Voice. I do have a few questions:
    1. I gather that we should do this BEFORE we leave the US, correct?
    2. Both of our numbers are on my T-mobile account and I'm the primary account holder. Once I port my number, do I follow the same steps for my husband's number OR will there be an issue because of me porting my number (primary account holder).
    3. For the new number to "forward" our old US number, we will then replace the old t-mobile sim card with a Portugal physical card once we arrive in Portugal...find out the number associated with that PT sim card and add that in Google voice? This will now allow 2-factor authentication from the US?
    4. In the iPlum FAQ, it talks about needing the PIN from my carrier and also asking the carrier to make sure the porting capability is unlocked. So there is no need for me to contact T-mobile at all during this process?
    Thanks!

    Thank you for this. I have two mobile phones and numbers on a family plan. One is for business and the phone never leaves the building and zero data gets used, so I'm like hey, I only need a wifi phone! But I gotta keep the phone number or my customers won't be able to find me. This solution will work. My number was actually an old magic jack number, but the quality was soooo awful we ported the magic jack number to a cell carrier, and now will be porting to google voice when my contract is up. Yay!!!! I"ll be Saving so much money.

    Thanks for all this info! Here are my questions: can I port my existing US number (I'm on Verizon) to someone else's Google Voice account, then just get a SIM card here (in Portugal) for my iPhone and not have to get another cell phone service plan? Where would calls to the old, ported number be received? My phone has dual SIM capability (E-SIM and a regular SIM) - so, I'm wondering if I used one more step to port my old number back to the number associated with the Portugal SIM, could I use my phone with two lines and no cell service carrier? Obrigada!

    • @TonyFlorida
      @TonyFlorida  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be able to use Google Voice off of WiFi, you'll need a local SIM card in Portugal. Otherwise, you can only use your Google Voice number when connected to Wifi.
      As for porting, why do you need to use your friend's Google Voice account? Is it because your friend is still in the US? Could your friend sign into your Google account in the US and do the porting for you? If so, then when you sign in to Google Voice in Portugal, you can make calls back to the US for free. Calls to Portugal from your Google Voice will still cost money.

I presume that once I remove my t-mobile SIM card, I will not have access to phone calls to my current number. So my question is, can i use a calling app that will show my OWN mobile number when i dail these govt. offices? Why you may ask i go through all this? To save $$$ on a huge bill that i will be facing if i made a direct call via my mobile carrier...even with their international calling plan because i expect to be left hanging (on hold) for a long time before i get my issues resolved. I have the T-Mobile LineLink home phone adapter for my home landline. I also have cell service with them as well. I checked as you described on checking to see if number can be ported at it can be ported. (Congratulations.Your mobile number can be ported. )
    My question is the exact procedure to port my T-Mobile LineLink landline number to google voice. Do I initial need another number from T-Mobile once my original number gets removed from my account?
    Also, from what I have seen on the internet is that I would need another network VOIP phone adapter such as the OBi200/Polycom OBi200.
    So basically I am asking how do I port my home line from T-Mobile to Google Voice so my home landlines ring.
    Thanks in advance....

    • @TonyFlorida
      @TonyFlorida  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a disclaimer, I don't have experience porting landline numbers to Google Voice, but since you got the confirmation that your number is portable, it seems like you can proceed.
      In order to have your home phone ring after porting your landline number to Google Voice, you will need to get another phone number from T-Mobile. When the porting process is complete, you'll be able to forward all calls from your ported phone number (now your Google Voice number) to your new landline number.
      As far as the VOIP adapter, I don't think you'll need it because you'll have your new landline number from T-Mobile that will have calls forwarded to from Google Voice.
      Hope this helps! Please let me know when you are able to get things working ;)

    Question - I am currently using a secondary GV #(B) from other email on my Google Voice App. The secondary GV # (B) forwards to my primary Verizon # (A). I believe, Google's policy was that one cannot forward from one GV # to another GV #.

    Hi Tony! Is it true Google Voice shut down on Mid February 2022? Is it still can do it for one time fees ? Not sure? I m planning move to Asia for good. I want to port my Verizon US tel to Google voice. But my plan to go on next year April or May, 2023. Would that be only do it when you get the local SIM card in Asia when you there ? Can you still do it in US before you go ??
    I m confused. Would that be:
    1) before you go Port my US-Verizon number to google voice.
    - w/in 24-48 hours it will ended my services with Verizon
    At this point, do i need to inform Verizon to cancel my service in US/ unlock it/ so that when I at the oversea
    - then get a local SIM card for usage permanently( since decided move abroad )
    But only obtain google voice close to moving ( April/May)
    It seems once you ported the phone in US - cannot receive as a regular usage in US after 24/48 hours ported.
    Meaning cannot receive phone call or texting or What app or iMessage & email ???
    Am i correct?? Sorry i 'm bit confuse???

    Hi. Thank you for this! I have a situation: My AT&T number is an additional plan to that of my Uncle’s main account. I will be travelling outside the US for a long time and I wanted to make sure that I keep my number as it is associated with a lot of my accounts (school, bank, etc). He suggested that I process phone unlocking and he is thinking about stopping the services on my number so I won’t be charged internationally once I get out of the US. How do I approach this? Should I process phone unlocking first, followed by porting my number to Google Voice before telling my Uncle that he can now request to stop my services? If so, can I now use Google Voice to be my psuedo phone even if my Uncle cancels its services after I process the porting? If not, how can I best keep my number and receive texts/notifications while I am outside the US? Would getting a new prepaid number while in the US allow me to just tell my uncle, ok you can stop my number’s services, and ill make use of my new prepaid number for porting? Thank you so much.

      @TonyFlorida  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@katewaters5092 since it's confusing for your I would suggest porting a month or two prior to your departure so you can get used to how it works. Let's say you have AT&T now and your phone number is 555-5555. What you can do is port 555-5555 to Google Voice. This will remove this line from your AT&T account. You can add a new line to AT&T and let's say your new AT&T number is 555-1234. With Google Voice, you can "forward" all 555-5555 calls to 555-1234 and from your perspective and the perspective of the caller, nothing has changed. Then you can tell AT&T to cancel your service on the day you leave for Panama. This will terminate 555-1234 but not 555-5555. When you get to Panama, get a local SIM card and set up the same "forwarding".

    So in order to have a google voice number I need to keep my AT&t plan active when I am travelling outside? How does that help? I have to pay AT&T and google voice it seems. Does this only benefit only for saving money on the international roaming charges?

    • @TonyFlorida
      @TonyFlorida  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You can have a Google Voice number without AT&T (or similar service provider). In this case, you can use the number anywhere in the world on WiFi. If you want to connect to cell phone towers overseas, your best bet is to get a local SIM card (which will be significantly cheaper than AT&T) and use the Google Voice app.

    My wife can't get a google voice phone number, thanks to Craigslist scammers. I have a US-Verizon phone number that I want to port since we now live in Portugal, and I had previously obtained a GVN. Is there anyway I can obtain a GVN for my wife too? I assume not, because I figure the number is associated to my google account. Is there some sort of work around? I want her to carry her own phone with her own #, and me to carry my phone with my own number. Thanks in advance!

      Hi Sandy. Ever Google account is eligible for a free Google Voice number (no need to port or anything). Would that be sufficient? Otherwise, it gets tricky to port a US number overseas. Believe me, I tried it before :)

    • @sandygablehomes

      @@TonyFlorida did you mean "every" google account can get a free Google voice #? I got mine in CA, before we moved. My wife (Jan) got scammed by Craigslist buyers, so she is unable to obtain her own google voice # as far as we can tell. I'm 12 hours into porting my phone now. Once I get a new cheaper phone plan with a new phone #, I forward "that" number to google voice, which in theory means the original first # I ported(and the # I want to keep forever), will ring on my phone and the callers will have dialed the ported # or my original number.

    Once this is done we would no longer have our current account with Spectrum Mobile ?

    So here is my plan. I have a land line with a number that i will be porting to a cell carrier (GV only accepts porting numbers from cell carriers and not from land lines). Then I will be porting the number now on a cell carrier into GV.......
    One question though, how can i get rid of the GV grettings when callers call my GV number. I would like it to ring and if i dont answer then go to VM.

      This is a really good idea to first port to a cell phone company then to Google Voice. I can't believe I never thought of doing that before.
      You can customize your voicemail in Google Voice like normal. In other words, no one will know that you're using Google Voice

      You'll know it's done when your current carrier phone number and service stop working (because the line associated with that number was cancelled on behalf of Google Voice). For me, this was exactly 24 hours after initiating the porting process.

    I’m a little confused... I have a t-mobile number... that used to be my home landline number.. I pay $20/mo for that line... if I port it to Google and cancel it from T-mobile, why do I need a new number from T-mobile? Wouldn’t they then start charging me $20/mo for that number too?

    • @TonyFlorida
      @TonyFlorida  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Google Voice by itself isn't a service provider. If you'd like to continue using your ported phone number on your cellphone as normal, you will need service with T-mobile in order to make calls/connect to the internet. Without a new contract with T-mobile, you could only use your ported phone number on Wifi.
      Does that make sense?

    • @pbennett13
      @pbennett13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony Florida somewhat... my main concern was preservation of my number. It was my landline for over 20 years... the goal was to “park” it until I decided what to do with it. Using only over WiFi would be fine since it’s rarely used. But to port it via Google, I needed to activate it on a mobile phone. The process then asks to call that number and respond to it ising a code on the screen to start the porting.
      I’m assuming once the port is complete, and I pay the $20... the number is permanently mine with no more monthly fees. Am I correct?

    • @TonyFlorida
      @TonyFlorida  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pbennett13 yes that is correct. When the porting process is complete, the number is yours. The only fee you pay is the one-time $20 porting fee. No more monthly bills. Additionally, you'll be able to use the number on WiFi.
      If you figure out where you want the number to end up in the future, you'll have to go through a similar process "in reverse" to port the number out of Google.
