So interesting, and the decorating of the 9th Countess is fascinating! When I was a volunteer at The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island (built 1891-1893) they were replacing wallpaper and fabrics. Scalamandre of New York had the original patterns to use for reprinting and replacement.

USA does have syllabub. Colonial Williamsburg serves them in the taverns.

Lady A.V., you are doing a fantastic job showing these old houses and estates!
You've got a new subscriber in me.
I saw your old episodes I believe then the challenges of the pandemic came. Very happy to rediscover you and your channel.
The topic obviously helps to produce great content. Nevertheless credit is due where it belongs and it is you. You bring the air of loveliness and liveliness often lost when the historic subjects are brought to light.
    Thank you!

Loved the video! It is wonderful to hear the stories of the women who keep the household life going and caring for their husbands and the work that the men do.

I googled “snails and milk” and there’s a fair few new age articles talking about it curing a stroke! And some science articles debunking that. Seems it might have been an old “home remedy” for strokes? She had an old husband so maybe he was suffering from strokes!

I loved this video and your visit to this historic castle! I have one complaint about a few of your videos - the sound is low on some of them even when my speakers are turned up to 100! Our living room, or rather one small corner of it is my "bedroom", so I can't go somewhere quiet to watch. I do watch at midnight some nights, but I work as a caregiver and some of my days begin at 6 am! Anyway, your videos are a great getaway from the noise and chaos of living with my extended family in a small 2 bedroom apartment! Take care and keep those videos coming - I'll try to support you when I can. 💝❤😊

This was really interesting. I bet you could do an entire series on this wonderful place. Some years ago I chanced across an old copy of HB that had a story on an auction of some attic contents from CH after the Brideshead Revisited series. Of all the English country houses, this is in my top favorites. Thank you!

First, thank you so much for your enthusiasm whenever you speak of, or go near archives. I thought I was the only lunatic on earth who got that excited in Archives. Second, thank you so much for your tours of castles and stately homes. But I was wondering, when you do tours of homes that have expanded into commercial activities such as weddings, and the estates have accommodations for at least the Bridal parties, why don’t you show the cottages that have been upgraded or converted, that are available. Seems to me it would be like a commercial for those specific estates.
In any case, I have thoroughly enjoyed all the episodes on both Mapperton Live, and American Viscountess. I hope you continue to make. I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I rather enjoy living vicariously through your tours! Stay well! Excellent job! Looking forward to more! Thank you!

8:52. A good handful of hartshorn. My springerle cookie recipe calls for hartshorn (antlers of deer?) as a leavening. Nowadays it's ammonium carbonate, says Wikipedia.

Happy New Year Julie, I am thoroughly enjoying all the history and research you do to bring us these videos. Gosh Mapperton are so lucky to have you as it’s hard to imagine what would have become of its future had you not joined the family all those years ago. Americans have always had the reputation of getting things done. My Dad was in WW2 and always said only for the Americans we wouldn’t have won the war in the Pacific because they got things done. Looking fwd to 2024 historical videos.

I just looked up snail water and it says it was for a cure for consumption and dropsy to stop and stomach and liver. Which is very interesting.

  • @HappyLife693

I think the last ingredient of the snail water is lambs horn. So, if the other commenter's are correct, about skin care or stroke, the lambs horn probably adds hormones that can help regulate the blood pressure, and promote other dermatological or integumentary benefits.

This castle is fantastic. Super nice of them to share the pudding recipe too. I think the 6th Earl's wife was not only interesting in her own right but was still a beauty in her Widow's Weeds portrait. The whole place was beautifully done by all three of them.
