I think for this song Chris uses a Boss OC-2, an Akai Deep Impact as well as the Animato (and maybe other fuzz/disto/synths). I don't know how he recorded it in studio, but he plays it live an octave up. There's maybe 3/4 tracks just for bass, and I think the signal goes through the OC-2 in some of them. Standard :D But you could actually tune your bass in Drop D if you want to use the low D string
