Remember when he returned to TV to narrate “Back To The Batcave”, the documentary/comedy about the Batman show? Adam West and Burt Ward kept hearing his voice, but didn’t know where it was coming from. They even showed his screen test footage at one point, and at the end of the show, Lyle steps out of an announcer’s booth and said, “And if I had gotten the part, it’d STILL be on the air!” 😄

We've lost so many of these classic actors lately. Watching their shows from back when they were young kind of creates the illusion that they are the same age now even though I'm in my 50s and was watching them when I was a little kid.

I know many of these people were stars when I was a youngster and I should expect this to happen but it doesn't make it any easier when my favorites pass away! Heck, I'm still bummed out over Randy Savage and Steve Jobs dying and it's been almost 10 Years!

Is it possible that he was too handsome? Lyle reminded me of Cary Grant in many ways.

@@jdsundstrom Perhaps. But being phenomenally good-looking didn't hinder Robert Conrad any.

    • @GeraBrown
      @GeraBrown 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jdsundstrom Briefly, if possible, I agree with Waggoner's resemblance to Cary Grant, although Grant had greater facial dexterity and was carrying roles by face-acting into the '50s. North by Northwest comes to mind. Michael mentioned Conrad, who had a facial intensity few others had. By the turn of the decade, the '80s saw mostly younger actors we hadn't seen before taking lead roles. The one role I think Waggoner would have done better with because of his sketch-comedy background was Jake in Tales of the Gold Monkey. And for the same reason I think his chemistry with Marta DuBois would've been better than Steven Collins'.
My final point is an open question. Very often the downturn of a career in entertainment has less to do with marketability and everything to do with the decisions made by the talent and/or their agent. You make a wrong choice, your career goes down. Your agent goofs, same result. So I'm not saying this was the case with Lyle, because I have no idea. It's an open question, and I may do some Googling on it later. Sometimes your brain gets an itch.

i grew up with an absent, support dodging father. Almost every guy in my neighborhood were jerks to their kids and wives. I wanted to be different. So, growing up I modeled my politeness and manners on Lyle's Steve Trevor. Yes, indeed, little kid me did just that. He wasn't a "cool" guy on Wonder Woman. He didn't play a "man's man" using force. He simply played a man with God Damn Sense to him using his head and his heart. His character treated Diana with a lot of respect. That made an impact on me as my mom would come home with horror stories of her male superiors. Yeah, he played a fictional character that was scripted. But he performed it so well. I heard he disliked being a second banana to a woman. I hope someone told him he should be proud for playing a better male role model with a single role than most actors do in their whole careers.

I had the BIGGEST crush on Lyle Waggoner. Tall, dark, and oh so handsome--the epitome of the classic Hollywood leading man! I swooned every week when he came on "Wonder Woman" (I was so jealous of Lynda Carter--seriously, what red-blooded woman wasn't?!). I also loved him on The Carol Burnett Show. I looked Lyle up a few years ago to see how he was doing, and I was pleasantly surprised to see he was still with us. Then yesterday the sad news popped up on my feed. He was loved and admired, a good friend and family man, and gave back in return for what was given to him. More famous people don't have half that eulogy to their memory.
May Lyle Waggoner rest in peace. He will be missed. (Now my 6-year-old self needs to go sit in a corner and weep.)

I read about how another actor, Van Williams ("Green Hornet") saved every dime he made from acting (which he never really had that big of an interest in after some talent scout spotted him) and opened a successful business renting communications equipment to law enforcement agencies. Linda Cristal ("High Chaparral") saved all of her acting checks and successfully invested in some risky stocks after she mostly retired from acting. She became very wealthy, if I remember her profile in one of the Lamparski books correctly.

Lyle Waggoner almost became Batman. But he worked longer with Carol Burnett and later with Linda Carter as Wonder Woman. If he didn't become Batman he took things in stride. He was able to land more roles. Sorry to hear about his passing.

He was every bit as handsome as Rock Hudson and Cary Grant. We still watch Carol Burnett reruns and it’s amazing he wasn’t in more movies as the handsome leading man. RIP Lyle 🌹

Great video Dave. This is another of the shows that I watched growing up and and Lyle was a great actor and he was fantastic in all of the Wonder Woman episodes and whatever show that he made an appearance in. Maybe I'm a little bit biased towards Adam's portrayal of Batman if the part had been given to Lyle I'm sure it would have been an interesting take on the character, but I just keep hearing Adam's voice as Batman.. R.I.P. Lyle

He was a great actor in the Carol Burnett Show and Wonder Woman. Even though he did not get the Batman part, he did get the part of the voice at the end of each part one episode, same bat time, same bat channel.

Dave, this was really great to see. . . I thought of his almost Batman role too. . . It was always my thought that both he and Adam West were the best of their type for that role. As if the powers that be had a two headed coin that read camp and absurdity on one side and serious with a hint of tongue n cheek on the other. And when flipped it landed on the camp side. I certainly felt Lyle would have also been a great Batman of his own kind. But like you said, he became Steve Trevor and now when I here that name I only think of good ol' LW - and only him.

    • @jdsundstrom

Mr.Waggoner looked the part but I thought his voice was too "nasally" for Batman! I can only imagine how he would have said: "You FILTHY criminals!" Having said that I LOVED him as STEVE TREVOR JR., the Head of the IADC on Wonder Woman, which isn't easy for me to say, since I'm not into the character's father in the comic books!
Also, as a straight man on The Carol Burnett Show, Waggoner was terrific because he was better able to resist laughing at the then, guest starring Tim Conway's antics! Rest well, Lyle, you brought me lots of joy!

He was a great performer and I never heard anything bad about him from his co-stars. A gentleman by all accounts.
I must admit, though, that as a kid I was too mesmerized by Linda Carter to truly appreciate his role in Wonder Woman. She was drop dead gorgeous. Only second to Lindsay Wagner in my pre pubescent eyes.

Back in 1990 I was running a private yacht down in Mexico. I met Lyle's longtime and very beautiful wife, Sharon, at the Mexican resort Las Hadas. Her and Lyle owned a house nearby. One day Sharon invited me and some other people to their house for dinner. They had a very nice house on the cliff overlooking the ocean. Lyle was nice but seemed kind of reserved at the dinner. He really didn't say to much that I remember but he was a pleasant host.

My favorite memory of Lyle was just before the show started in earnest and a woman from the audience said how much she loved Lyle Waggoner...and right there he staged an impromtu date asking the woman to marry him.

I love Lyle but I'm glad he didn't become Batman because Adam West is Batman. Loved him in Carol Burnett and Wonder Woman and in Fantasy Island where he played a gorgeous man and robot I think. Diana Prince said it best in one episode where Steve Trevor's secretary said he was "always the perfect gentleman" and Diana said, "yes, perfect".

Now there are just two left, Carol and Vicki, from that wonderful, funny show. This is the part of ageing for us Boomers that I feel hurts as much as the loss of a family member, watching the people you enjoyed on TV, the movies, music, passing away. It's a kind of grief I never anticipated.
