i think the fact that the beans were edible and no one got food poisoning is reason enough to call this a success, given that it was their first - and most likely will be their only - attempt XD

@@MsJazzyRay a lot of raw beans are actually toxic, cooking them denatures the lectins and makes them edible.
But also he threw, like, a pound of raw (what I'm assuming was) pork in there. Pretty possible to get food poisoning from undercooked pork.
Plus who knows when the heat stopped... they could've been underground, not hot enough to kill bacteria, and not refrigerated, for half a day... the food would definitely not be safe to eat if that was the case

Hearing Geoff talk about planning the bean hole, I was so interested in making my own. After seeing the *results* of said bean hole, I'll stick with a slow cooker, maybe smoke them on my grill, but I'm not digging no hole.

I feel like someone missed the part of the story where the beans were cooked by loggers in the middle of nowhere with nothing else to eat, there was never a guarantee that this would taste good, just that it is food.
Nobody got food poisoning so...success? Lmfao

When the hammer broke I laughed so hard my chest hurts now 😂
This video broke me and is finally making me a comment leaver, but a few things for improvement. The hole needs to be bigger, larger coals are necessary underneath and on top of the pot and if you alternate foil and wet burlap it'll help keep moisture in the bean hole (regulating temps) and make a tighter seal in the bean pot.

Watching this back and I DIED at that. It was such a tiny touch that definitely wasn’t intended when they were filming but Gavin caught it while editing and put that together. I love his sense of humor

Knowing how this turns out and hearing what they say on the first few minutes, I can't but help feel that they brought this on themselves.

After listening to the podcast about this whole thing and then now watching it, I liked the bit where Gavin goes "you're ground's so much nicer then mine" Geoff stars digging.
As someone who cooks on fire a lot that fire was about 1/3 the size it needed to be.
Yeah looking online I saw you’re basically supposed have enough wood to have a fire going for 16 hours.
Isn't it painful to constantly be on fire while you're cooking?

If you do want to retry the bean hole, sifting your coals to get some of the ash out could get you a better cook. No guarantees that beans with onion and molasses will be super flavorful though :P

Bean-hole beans get their name because they are baked in a hole. For hundreds of years, the Penobscot Indians of Maine cooked their food in a hole in the ground. The first thing you need to cook bean-hole beans is a shovel! Recipe for bean-hole beans: -Dig a hole in the ground 3 feet deep and line it with rocks.
This feels like such a classic AH video, it touched my heart in a way. Just lads and gents being lads and gents.

I can’t believe how many pre-existing bean hole videos exist on TH-cam. I was looking up to see if anyone made a compilation or clip of the guys explaining the bean hole process on the podcast, but instead see videos of other folks successfully doing bean holes. Might be worth looking up if y’all want to do some Bean Hole Redemption.

Just hearing these voices always brings me joy to my core
One of the things I always think about with this is Geoff mentions loggers in northern america doing this, but people have been cooking things like this for thousands of years. One particualr one I always remember is that Romanies would cook hedgehogs in clay balls buried in ash so that the spines come off in the clay.

my guess is that the embers weren't hot enough. I've had some big bon fires where like 2 days later you throw a paper plate in the embers and it catches fire. That's the kind of embers you need (I think)

I'll have to say my favourite thing about this video isn't about the quality of production or how entertaining it is. Mostly about how much happy Geoff seems. Been a while since I've watch and RT or RT affiliate content but this was wholesome to watch
