    this is awesome. Even with that low wattage output, this is still a great generator. Think about it guys, A tea candle has an average of 40 watts of heat output for 4-5 hours. It would only take about 3 candles to rock this thing to charge your cellphone or tablet at only 1-3% efficiency !

    nice job,, Iv only put together a small lamina engine so far but have been wondering how viable it would be to scale it up.. Now iv seen this i think i may have to have a go .. Great Work

    OMFG! Finally someone built a large one. I'm trying to convert a 4-stroke to a high compression lamina flow engine.

    This is the best engine I have seen. I am working on a similar design except that it works like a two stroke engine with external combustion.

    Hello, A marvellous achievement indeed, congratulations. Perhaps you could answer a couple of questions? You heat your cylinder on the end as is done on a regular stirling engine; yet all demonstration glass tube engines are heated near the middle of the cylinder. Would you mind explaining this? What kind of packing or regenerator do you use, if any? Have you measured the electrical power output of your engine?

    This is the largest thermoacoustic engine I have seen yet. Great job!
    What are you using for a stack or regenerator? Is there a restricting hole? Is the cold spot critical?

    Great work against mechanical friction!
    -Have you measured actual temperatures yet?
    -Do you think that grooves on the piston walls are acting as gaseous piston rings?
    -Is the hot cap flat or filled with regenerator?
    -Is there empty space between regenerator and hot cap - like resonator space?
    I would try to increase thermal conduction on the hot cap and it´s internal surface area.
    There seemes to be no "glogging" with alternator - Is it with rotating PM´s without iron around coil or coils?

    This is one of the best stirling engines designs I have ever seen on TH-cam. Could you provide more information like a section cut on a drawing with some rudimentary dimensions and explanation. I know the stroke and piston dia. but how does the rest come tiogether.

    @ScientificClo, have you tried to charge the gas in the cylinder to a higher pressure and see if you can get more power out of the engine?

    Is the piston made of graphite or tungsten carbide? The latter might be better in terms of tensile strength.
    If refractory properties are desired then you should use tantalum carbide

    Congratulations, for the workmanship of this engine. Please note that stating just the generated voltage is no indication of the power of the engine.

    Couldn’t you use the output power to store power in some graphene battery to power the heater of the engine

    A thermoacoustic engine can theoretically run as fast as the standing acoustic wave it generates. Friction and inertia are the only thing which limit this.

    Hey ScientificClo ,
    Great vid of an even greater machine. Verry inspiring would really like to how manny amps the leds are drawing or what resistance they have so we could calculate power output and effienciencie.
    Does this engine have a restrictor ?? does it have a narrow hole between hot and cold side ?? If so, can you please give the dimensions.
    Last, does it run without crank or did you never tried this ??

    I don't think he is using any stack. A so called thermoacoustic engine essentially works like a 2 stroke engine with external combustion so the air in the cylinder is reused with some heat removed by the cold end. Power density is inversely to efficiency. The more heat removed by the cold end, the greater the power output and lower efficiency.

      Not OP, but it's similar to a beta stirling engine but without the displacer. The air is displaced by acoustic waves in the cylinder.

    Why power it electrically at all? If you already got that sorta..you can never get more than what you feed it in this version, whereas a fuel based is rather a conversion from heat to movement

    Nicely built engine, congrats. But a misleading video. You are putting more electrical energy in than would be needed to power the leds directly, the rest is wasted as heat. You should have said that, because some viewers may think that this is a good way of using electricity to power leds. It certainly isn't. At a rough guess, I reckon about 90% of the energy of the battery is being wasted as heat. The exercise is interesting and you've done it well, but maybe you should have been clearer about putting , say 100 watts in to get get 10 watts out.

    Sorry, but this is not a thermoacoustic engine. You obviously don't know what a thermoacoustic engine is. This is just a conventional Stirling engine.
