- The South China Sea dispute feels like a never-ending saga. At the heart of it is China’s bold claim-called the "nine-dash line"-which covers nearly 90% of the South China Sea. They base this on historical usage, but it’s a major point of contention for other countries, especially because it overlaps with their Exclusive Economic Zones. Out of all the nations involved, the tensions between the Philippines and China are especially high.
So, what’s the solution to this tangled mess? Well, let’s hear from George Yeo..

As a Filipino, it is in the Philippines' interests to have a dialogue with China. Exchange benefits in the region as fellow Asian countries who share a common backyard. Speaking of the unclos tribunal in 2016, I find it offensive that NOT ONE Filipino lawyer was allowed to represent the Philippines in the Hague. All the representative for that unilateral case against China were British and American lawyers. Really now, we're supposed to defend our territorial rights, but we can't use our own legal counsel in the Philippines? It's such a BS bullcrap ruling. Second, that ruling is not recognized by the UN. Even the UN themselves came out with a statement denying that part of the hague where the case was brought on. So the moment you mentioned 'legal win it achieved in 2016', right away this content lacks credibility, straight up. With the US pulling the strings behind the Philippines neck, it's hopeless find a peaceful resolution. Again, as a Filipino, what we need a is a useful cooperation with China... AND NOT THE US GOVT MEDDLING USING THE USELESS AMERICAN MILITARY BASES IN THE COUNTRY.
Asean countries must try to solve issues with dialog. None of the countries in the region wants war. As long as the HOG keep their head cool, there is always ways to reach to a win win solution
From a common man’s perspective: Unlike the US and its allies, China tends to avoid speaking negatively about others and consistently seeks peace and business through comprehensive cooperation.
@@biswanathmukherjee4622 Are you living in a well??
@@Buttercookies0 You are the one living in a well. All the wars in the world are started by the Americans. China has not been in a war for more than 40 years.
An arbitration court is not a court that judges right or wrong legally. It is for the purpose of two parties willingly coming together to seek arbitration to settle a difference. Without the consent of the other party, it is invalid, meaningless.
Once the US gets their grubby hands out of S.E. Asia then there can be peace.
All along US has been around when SEA were prospering in the last few decades. It is only when China starts to gain strength and trying to abuse its power everywhere that peace becomes difficult. Look at the many countries that have disputes with China. Are you not aware?? Or refuse to be aware??
When the world map was published, they call it South China Sea and the Pnoises at that point in time were still ahem ahem, a colony. 😏🤥🥱They never lay claim to the disputed sea when they were a colony and not even their colonial masters lay claim to the South China Sea. Now, embolden because of multiple su gar daddies, Pnoises started to claim those areas as theirs🥱
Philippines never claimed the whole South China Sea, only the islands claimed are the islands near the Philippines and EEZ. The Philippines have a map the they presented to win the UNCLOS arbitral case at The Hague. Meanwhile, China has no single historical evidence that’s why they couldn’t fight Philippines in courts. If China has a valid map, why don’t they go to UNCLOS and challenge everyone??? Wonder why?
South China Sea dispute can be solved through diplomacy between the disputants without an instigating third party involved
The lessons of Ukraine falls deaf to the pinoy ears. You dig your own hole, go fill it up yourself. ASEAN will NOT support u.
Don't speak for ASEAN if you are a Chinese. You are not part of ASEAN.
As an American, I'd like to thank the Filipino people.
We supply weapons, you supply men.
After we win, we maintain world's only superpower, you get a few tiny islands.
Win-win for both of us.

We really digusting with Filipino when their corrupt president become USA's loyal vassal lapdog puppet state.
Better you join your master and quit ASEAN.

Philippines should settle the claims disputes by talking to China and any resources can be jointly developed for the benefits of both countries.
Trying to confront China using the Americans as backbone is not a wise decision.
China has no intention to negotiate. Everything has to be on China's terms. China is only interested if it wins and other loses. This kind of negotiation is no negotiation, simply bullying. So China has itself to blame for US presence.

You make conclusions before trying to talk.

Good sarcasm.
Smart to use others as proxies.

Thanks for the post.
Every ASEAN country has its own priority and interest. Philippines does not need ASEAN to insists its rights within 200 Nautical Miles EEZ according to 1982 UNCLOS.
US, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, India, New Zealand, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, France and European Union are supporting the Philippines. In case there will be WAR against China these allied countries are big help for the Philippines to win the WAR.
Where is ASEAN there?

Peace is possible with the US out of the equation.
US was not in the equation from the beginning until China started bullying Philippines which had a mutual defense treaty with the US. China would come to defend N korea from attacks of another countries, Because they have mutual defense treaty, correct? Same logic.
Japan and Spain patiently waiting in the background after the US is done with their colonization efforts
Truly - New world order of Peace , security and stability in the Indo-Pacific can be achieved NOT by
simply " dialogue and consultations " but by rules based International law and order which is legal and binding.
Right is might and no one is above the law
The United Nation assembly is the forefront and must champion the rights and entitlement of the new world order.
Lee Kuan Yew had articulated a disdain for Marcos whom he deemed unfit to govern the Philippines for the progress of the Filipino masses. Why? Simply because Marcos was corrupt to the core and concentrated power and benefit for himself and his small inner circle and to hell with ordinary Filipinos. As a result, ordinary pinoys continue rotting to this day. Now what about Bongbong the spoilt brat? The consequences for the long-suffering Filipino masses are going to be significantly much more tragic. Mark my words!
The 2016 tribunal was a double scam in which a private arbitration firm with a grand sounding Permanent Court of Arbitration name charged the Philippines a phenomenal sum to make UNCLOS contradicting pronouncements the paymaster craved for.
It then misrepresented the tribunal as having been conducted by The Hague (UN's International Court of Justice) located in the same building at Hague City, Netherlands.
The 1982 UNCLOS Convention is for defining sea features and conferring broad 200Nm EEZs, not challenging pre-existing borders.
EEZ is by maritime definition a part of international water. Both must necessarily give way to national boundary.
From your comments you're implying China is the only legal claimant and China's claim is not a scam.
Us already left Vietnam because they lost to China.
So you mean China owns Vietnam? Better tell that to the Vietnamese if they agree.
Is it fair for the Americans and Canadians to claim the continent of North America? Is it fair for the white Australians to claim the sub continent of Australia? Is it fair for the white New Zealanders to claim New Zealand? On what legal basis did the white men claimed these lands?
So what are you implying here? Go to war who ever wins takes all. Go to the history of these places before commenting.

The Philippines claim of the WPS is not WEAK, in fact we win against China in the International tribunal, its part of our EEZ.
@@kawanderstv-ronnelquider3993 That was not a real win, as no Chinese representative was present in that case. Paano ka mananalo sa isang kaso kung wala dyan ang kalaban mo? Also, realize that there was a heavy sum of bribery that the British/US representative paid the judges each and everyday the hearing was done, hefty money to favor the ruling to the Philippines. Huwag masyadong padala sa narratives ng Amerika, and even Rappler is CIA-funded. Be a more discerning pinoy.
It's very weak. EEZ is not Philippines territory in international law. While SCS belongs to china and Taiwan territory since ancient times right up to present times.
It’s not recognized by the UN. The “international tribunal” has no authority whatsoever to intervene. And 2nd what the Philippines was pushing for in The Hague was the right to fish in the disputed waters, not territorial ownership. Pinoys like you didn’t even read the arbitration that the Philippines supposedly won, you’re just blindly following your liberal media and the American oppressors.
@@7Kris7Kristhere were no Chinese representatives because China has no single historical evidence or document to their claim, why go to a fight without any weapons or shield. If China’s case is not weak, then go to the court if they believe it so? All of China ancient maps doesn’t show the SCS and China knows it.
