The Malaysian state of Sabah straddles the northern tip of one of the world's largest islands - Borneo. With its ancient rainforests, idyllic lagoons and pristine beaches, it encapsulates the very best of this ancient island. Sabah lies at the heart of the 'Coral Triangle' .
The 'Coral Triangle' is considered the global epicentre of marine biodiversity. The entire area represents one of the richest marine habitats in the world and an estimated 3,000 different species of fish, more than 500 reef-building coral species and more than 30% of the world's coral reefs can be found here. One of them is a secret island that is hidden like a treasure, and divers from all over the world consider it to be the best diving place. And we call it Sipadan.
This tiny speck of land, located 40km south of Semporna, is in fact a needle-like pinnacle of rock and reef surrounded by 600m deep water - a constant source of nutrient-rich upwellings. These nutrients provide the basis for a remarkable food chain that culminates in the many large animals commonly encountered in Sipadan's waters. In recognition of this unique and productive ecosystem, the area is now carefully protected, with limits on the number of divers that can visit every day and a ban on resorts on the island itself.
When you go blue diving, it seems like you're venturing into a world with no gravity at all. It is possible to come across live organisms when you freely swim around in the big body of water. As you Scratch the surface of the tank with a probing rod and create noises with a plastic bottle, you will hope to to see a someone . The locals refer to it as a hammerhead shark. Hammerhead sharks are normally found in the deep ocean, however there is always a chance that divers may encounter them when blue diving.
Pulau Mabul lies 25km south of Semporna and is justifiably renowned for its 'muck' diving on a wide variety of different dive sites, boasting fantastic reefs, and even wall dives. The sandy seabed around the island is home to various species of micro organism.
The weather may be unpredictable around here. Even if the sun is out throughout the day, there is still a chance of rain in the evening. However, there is no cause for concern for the people who live here. They sing as they wait for the sun to rise the next day, well aware that the blazing sun will once again illuminate the sky in the morning.
Bumphead Parrotfish have strong beaks to feed on live corals and algae, and a single adult will ingest tons of coral eachyear which is excreted as white sand.
Their feeding activity is important for the production and distribution of coral sand
within a reef, and to prevent growing algae from choking coral.
A large coral colony can be found at Sipadan, and the majority of these corals sparkle like gems in the sunshine at a depth of just five meters below the surface. Another reason to be proud of this place is the magnitude of the colorful Antias, which uses the rough coral as a safe sanctuary to reside in.
The safe sanctuary for turtles, a bountiful food source for fish, and a place where people may have amazing experiences. It is called Sipadan.
