Hi Lee, I’m a bit late to this video but currently have a pup at exact same age so following your journey for comparison. Flash a superb little man and I suspect he’s an impressive little worker now at three years old - will look for the videos. I’ve had springers but this is my first cocker and I recall Ian Openshaw saying you need to put disciplines in much earlier with cockers and I am doing so to positive effect. I’m amazed at their pace of development and I’d say I have mine at your position at 17 weeks too whereas I wouldn’t be starting with a springer until 6 months plus. I’ve started making pup wait whilst I make the odd retrieve myself on occasion just so he doesn’t think everything is his and start anticipating. Thank you for your videos and I’ll enjoy the rest of the journey with you! Steve 👍🙏

Nice video my dad used to have good spaniels many years ago but he wouldn't start a dog til about 6 months it would know it's name and that's about it! Interesting how things have changed regarding age to start

I think the majority still wait till the pup is 6 months or even 12 months old before training. The most important thing is to start where the pup is and work at the pace of the pup.
Thank you for the post 👍🏻

........bit late now but when you throw out a retrieve take the dog away from where you sat it and then after about 2 mins send it on.., this way you'll steady from chasing on...
