  • The Sony 135mm F1.8 GM lens has been called the sharpest lens ever made. Evelyn Drake and Dave Paul talk about its strengths as well as what kind of photography it could be best used for, and if it is worth the premium price point.
    A special thanks to Kent of Inglewood for allowing us to capture Dave's first straight razor shaving experience: www.kentofingl...

    Performance as smooth as Dave’s shave and as stylish as Ev’s hat! This lens has the heritage of a Minolta 135mm I used with an SRT-101 forty years ago. Very nice.

    Of all the reviews I’ve seen on this lens, i found your review is the most succinct and informative. You covered all the relevant points in a matter of fact way but with just the right amount of humor. It’s a nice review, very convincingly presented.

    Great review from the sharpest photo team on TH-cam. It looks like an amazing lens. The close focusing aspect is especially interesting. I wish Sony supported focus stacking.

    Great video! This lens is an absolute dream. I was blown away when I tested it for a while with how lightning fast and accurate that AF was, just wow. The close focus ability really brings so much versatility to a 135 which I never thought I would use for shooting products and indoors. I team this 135 GM with the sigma 105 1.4 + 35 1.2 art and you get a really crazy portrait/event/street kit on the A7RIII! :)

    Great video I like the idea of sharp razors and sharp lenses.
    Sony is galloping fast with its e-mount lenses. Canon and Nikon still have a huge advantage with the variety of their lenses but the gap is closing.
    However the Canon and Nikon mirrorless cameras will have trouble to catch up Sony with their RF mount and Z mount lenses. Sony is so much forward and the variety of lenses available is an important factor for the choice of a camera.
    I have to say that lately Sony have neglected to introduce many affordable e-mount lenses for amateurs. Nearly all its latest e-mount lens are oriented for the professional market.

    I'm leaning towards the Zeiss 135mm f2.8 as part of my travel kit, over a 70-200 F4 zoom and the new Sony 135mm f1.8. Been fine with a 85mm as the longest lens in the current incarnation of my kit , but sometimes zooming with the feet is either not possible or intrusive in a street scene. A "real" zoom size would mean I might have to kick a prime or two from my bag. Would love the extra sharpness and low light capability of the new Sony, but not sure it would actually come into play enough.

    The Sony 135mm 1.8 GM lens is also very good for nature, landscape and close-up photography. The lens hood should have been much more rugged and there should be 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for this lens !

    Everyone seems to be comparing the lens to the Sigma f/135mm f/1.8 art but for me the best 135mm is the Zeiss 135mm f/2 Milvus, which for me is better than the Sigma.

      @@kliaklia6391 Well just doing a quick look, I just saw that I could buy the Zeiss 135mm f/2 Milvus ZF.2 (with aperture ring) for £1.11 (including postage) more than the Sony 135mm f/1.8 G Master. So the price is in the same ball park

      Happy here with my D750 and 180mm 2.8. But the Canon 135mm and Nikon 180mm are such old designs, that it is fun to see this G Master version with modern lens and coating and autofocus technology.

    I feel like it was a strange choice to put aspherical lens in a premier, large, expensive portrait lens. It's not like it's compact, why introduce cat's eye bokeh?

      IBIS tho

    • @Smoothblue90
      @Smoothblue90 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But ... then it would not be so sharp. I mean if you want to design a really sharp lens. You don't put image stabilization inside the lens. Tamron made the same choice with their 35 mm 1.4.

    • @sibangjack
      @sibangjack 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because many newer Sony full-frame bodies have IBIS, so even though the lens doesn't have stabilization it'll be stabilized by the sensor. Sigma also didn't put stabilization in their Art prime lenses to achieve maximum sharpness possible.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Smoothblue90 Absolutely correct, using a floating element in a lens of this sharpness would be a compromise.

    • @shaolin95
