  • This episode of Southern Gothic is the first in the three-part series "Birth of a City: New Orleans," a story that chronicles the inception of a great American city and the legends that evolved with it.
    Part I: The Casket Girls
In 1721 the French founded the city of New Orleans as the mouth of the Mississippi River, but development was slow, so the city's leaders requested young women of marriageable age to be sent to the young colony. Unfortunately, little is known about the origins of these women, who some believe may have been the first vampires to immigrate to the New World. Women, who have become known as "The Casket Girls."
Theme music for "Birth of a City: New Orleans" was written and performed by Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Adam Wright. Additional narration by Donna Elwin of the podcast A Paranormal Chicks.

I live close to N.O there is a strange energy for sure there and you can definitely end up on the menu. All the lights and bars attract people like bugs to a light. Alot of people go missing and some people are never missed.pimps hookers strippers hustlers etc its dangerous. Always go with a group!!!! A pay attention to your surroundings!!! And stay out of dark alleys and sides of buildings. We are all prey in New Orleans remember that!!

I'm planning on moving to New Orleans and I visited back in 2018 and there definitely a strange energy in the city and it's surrounding areas. There's this weird dark heavy feel and not to mention it seems like everything is rumored to be haunted or seems like it very well could be haunted. New Orleans is definitely a freaky place. And that's just touching on the supernatural side that's scary, not to mention the some of the people to inhabit the city, there's some parts where I definitely don't feel safe at all

@@skeletalremains8555 a lot of the stories of our city have been over exaggerated. We don't really focus on putting on a show of the " haunted " . We're more about telling the real stories. But it is true, it is a very dangerous place. Predators are always watching and especially target the tourists and new comers. Be safe. It can also be a very beautiful place too.

@@skeletalremains8555 My MawMaw used to tell me in a city as old as New Orleans a lot has happened in a small geographic area. It’s just haunted concentrate. She always said the water in the soil traps spirits, they get stuck in the mud. There’s a lot more to fear in the real history and in modern day happenings. Just be respectful of local superstition

Mama New Orleans is calling me back home too. I was there in 2018 for Her 300th birthday as well. I wonder if we crossed paths. Everyone asked me for directions feeling I was from there. Even the Native New Orleanians. I had too many supernatural experiences and blessings to count.
I stayed for 2 1/2 months. (Feb-Apr) Mostly in the French Quarter. Mama New Orleans either loves you and takes you in her arms, protecting and providing for you in every way OR if she dislikes you, your life will quickly be in complete ruins, if you survive at all. I miss her every day. 👑🙏🏽👑

New World with a trunk, or cassette, containing their belongings. The word “cassette” morphed into “casquette” over time, and that translaed to “casket”. History recorded these women as “casket” girls. The filles à la cassette were some of the original “mothers” of New Orleans. Hope this puts to rest the stupid vampire storys surrounding the word “casquette” So mant people claimed to be decendants that these girls would have had to have had 30 or 40 children each

@@vignetteorleans1631 Honestly and truly ... who made you an authority over who this person can and can't be descended from? What does she have to gain or even lose by saying she is descended from the Casket Girls? Seriously, get over yourself. Unless you know her, you have no right to say how many children those women had. Or how many children their children had. Or how many children their children's children had. Unless ... you sat in the shadows and watched ... 🤔🤫🤭

Cassette means small box in French, not a coffin for bones. It was a small travel trunk 22.5 inches long, 10 inches wide, and 9 inches high. You can see real ones in Canadian museums

    Heroin capital of the US.
My son and a couple of his friends, went down there 4 years ago to go to Marti Gras. My son says it was the most racist and violent city,he’d ever visited. He and his friends got high, drank, and slept in cemeteries,St Louis#1 and #2.
He and his friends were also robbed, and homeless, the police couldn’t have cared less. He spent 2 months down there until we could get him home. Since he was robbed he couldn’t get an ID,he had to take the greyhound. 3 days going north to Massachusetts.
He was so glad to be home.
I was so happy to have him back!
He got clean and sober in February 2021,and is still doing great!

Doesn't "Cassette" or "Casete" literally translate as "Little Box" or "Box"?
So then it wasn't so much translated into "Casket" as it was Americanised?
I probably shouldn't be so pedantic but other than that, I thought that you narrated this very well and told the story in a way that made more sense and seemed more plausible. Very nicely done.

this was a very great video. if I were to believe in vampires, the casket girls for me wouldn't buy it as i saw someone on some news channel or something made a video going up on the 3 floors, the attic for which is supposedly banned and there were no coffins. but even with this possible debunked tale, I still find Jacque st Germain's legend interesting as that still hasn't been proven or disproved, just remains a mystery. great storytelling 💙💙
