Especially the movies he did here, back to back. He puts on 30 lbs to play the comedic Jimmy Dugan, goes back to normal and drops another 30 to play Andy Beckett in Philadelphia. And to think his big break came from dressing in drag on a sitcom.
Legend has it, that he had to improvise on this part because he forgot his line. Back then, 8mm film was hella expensive and he always had his take after the movie was done and went to the box office. So he always tried to keep expenses down by limiting retakes. This part is still funny even after 30 years.
There are many things I loved about this movie, including how it showed in a respectful manner a big difference between coaching men and coaching women. Men may respond well to being called a pile of pig shit and it will motivate them to be better, but women need a more positive supportive approach .. if he yells at Evelyn she will crumble and not function. . when he is nice her confidence goes up and she knows she can do it better next time.
Ask any former UConn women's basketball players how positive and supportive Coach Auriemma is as a coach. He is known to taunt his top recruits and ask them, "Don't you wish you went somewhere else?"
Hanks is amazing! The look on his face in The Green Mile when he finally was able to pass urine after the bladder infection was simply such a look of relief that at that moment I could almost feel it through the screen!
Having coached myself and having been the child and kid brother of coaches, Jimmy's non verbal communication in that scene just brings back so many memories :)
