    Talladega Co. Alabama 7B-I planted my potatoes, Red Pontiac and Russet, on March 5th. I had sprouts by March 14th, and frost. On the 19th, we had a hard freeze in our area. My potatoes shrugged it off and produced more sprouts. On the morning of the 26th, they were pounded by half inch hail stones. Not only did it not phase them, they put out a lot of new growth, and more sprouts. From the amount of sprouts and growth I've gotten, it is going to be an abundant crop. With last year's planting, the potatoes I planted in March gave the best yield. This year, I have planted four times the number that I planted last year. I am growing them in thirty gallon fabric pots, seven per pot buried six inches deep.

    I'm so happy to see this video. I'm in zone 7b and by looking at a lot of these videos I thought it was too late for me to start my garden. Looks like everyone has seedlings and everything is a transplant. Glad to see there's still time to plant some things to start my first garden.

    Thanks for showing how to grow potatoes in buckets as for many that is the only garden they may have. Have you ever added sulfur to your potatoes at planting? It is suppose to help with crop production and delayed maturity but I have not tried it and was interested in your experience. Thanks so much!

    I've hilled potatoes and not hilled. The thing I noticed with hilling (at about every 6 inches or so of growth) - potatoes that formed on the higher, later stem didn't have the same amount of time as those that formed earlier. In short, I maybe got a few more teeny potatoes but not anymore larger ones. Not sure I am saying that correctly but hopefully, you get my point.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      I agree I never found benefit but if you get a true indeterminate potato variety, most are determinate, they do well. But I would just rather plant like this several times a year.

    Great tips. If you plant the potatoes the way you do it, do you get less potatoes as opposed to planting it and filling the soil half way and then filling the bag with soil later on?

      No. Most potatoes are determinate varieties and dont benefit from hilling. It's hard to find the indeterminate varieties.

    Hello Gary! Thank you for the video. I am in neighboring Philly & am going to plant potatoes tomm. I followed your directions last summer and was delighted with my harvest - thank you so much! This year, I am tripling the containers used. Quick question - I seem to remember that you taught us “2 storey planting” I.e. plant one layer of potatoes in the middle of the bag and second layer at the top of the bag. I can’t seem to find any video supporting my recollection though - Am I missing something? 😢

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is true. This bag could have had one level planted lower. Ill be doing a new video on it. I forget what video I did that had it but in theory each level gets about 6 inches. Good luck.

      Different ways. The video today packs them in there. Requires a little more up keep. There are just options. Less potatoes planted usually means bigger potatoes in general.

      I dont think so as your mixes and beds vary too much. I never have but would say if you end up with issues of plants growing, then test. Basically wait for an issue to show. The pH can really be like 5.8 to 7 and things grow fine.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      The dry fertilizer is a slow release the feeds over the months. The liquid ones feed immediately and are great at the start and mid season. They are higher in nitrogen and probably not the best to use regularly on potatoes. You can but I like the combo.

    Why do you add the water soluble fertilizer when you're adding compost and organic fertilizer already? You think the soil is that depleted to start with it wont last 2 weeks or so?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't have to but they are really heavy feeders and container soil loses a lot of nutrients. SO compost first and organic granular to feed over the season. Water soluble to provide immediate nutrients to start off well. There are lots of ways to do it but I like to set the garden up for the start.

      I get mine from the grocery store and have no way of knowing which one they are. So, after buryng them approx 6"-9", I put a thick layer of straw on top. I did get a few green ones last year at the top where the straw got thin, but they are now being planted for this year. Just make sure they are well covered with thick mulch.

      You are correct. I buy my seeds potatoes and how I plant them is determined on if they are determinate or indeterminate. Indeterminate potatoes, you need to add soil as they grow if you plant in containers or hill them up if you plant inground

  • @clemfandango2930
    @clemfandango2930 ปีที่แล้ว

    Adding soil to the vine to get more potatoes only works with indeterminate varieties. The vast vast majority of potatoes are determinate so this is a waste of time and mounding soil will only help protect the tubers from the sun.determinate potato’s only grow tubers at the level they’re planted and won’t go above the seed potato so you can stagger your planting depths to increase yield.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. I stopped actually because finding clearly what potatoes were indeterminate was actually not that easy. Thanks on the stagger. I have have done that before in pots. I will clarify it in the future.
