I once met a fellow aspi, whose special interest was social interation, which apparently resulted in his psychiatrist declaring him curred.
On the other hand he seemed be pretty stressed by the mental effort of modeling too many people.
It was a very interesting and englightning conversation for me, since my approch to dealing with neuro-typics(NT) is to announce my autism, rather than trying to slip under the radar.
Personaly I have never regretted being open about my autism.
    1. If I make a social mistake I'm less penalised.
    2. If I do well socialy it is impressive.
    3. If I'm polite and helpfull I can create a shield of NTs to protect me against misunderstandings with outsiders.
    4. And it allows for less mental energy wasted on modeling people whom I will be interacting
In regards to eye contact, I used to stare at people, but I've been informed that it made people uncormftable, which has led to an attempt to avoid eye contact, since it is unclear to me where the line is.
In regards to the aspi/autism issue, it has been of great annoyance to me when other aspies refuse to acknowledge that they cannot be an asperger without being an autist. aspergers are a proper subset of autists, it would be the same as me stating "that as a man I am not human".
Personaly I think the greatest misconception about autism, is that we are not social and have social needs.
P.S. A great thing about being an autist is saying something completely outlandish and then stating it must be true since autists cannot lie :)

this is awesome, I have autism too and I was a bit worried going on this podcast, but it was ok. I can lie but I hate it, and I can look people in the eyes (it used to hurt) but then i can't listen to what they're saying x) I prob have ADHD as well. I think i should be open about my autism too going to uni, though I never know how to bring it up.

@@joachimbramson1991 I used to do it as part of the tell a bit about yourself, in the get to know your course-mates in the start of the semester(might be a danish tradition though), but the great thing is that even if it isn't the right time, the autism explains why you might have missed the cue, so it will be hard to lose :)
Edit: Also got ADHD, although I'm more an ADD than then an ADHD.

I work with people with special needs. Autism is the most common client. I start with a new asset next week, and he is autistic and has a horrific background history of growing up with a mother and father that are monsters. I'm nervous because I want to do a great job, I'm sure I will because it's what I do well, but I'm not sure what I'm walking into. This podcast helped. I learned some important details. Wish me luck. Keep up this podcast. This episode alone might have changed peoples outlook and life forever. Btw: "Love on the Spectrum" is amazing!

Hi Jim. Frank from Perth here. Not sure if this will get to you but I wanted to say thank you for this episode. My eldest son, number 4 of our 6 children has low functioning ASD, is non verbal and has other intellectual disabilities to go with it and I really appreciate the way you and your crew shed some light on the spectrum and the difficulties the people on the spectrum, their families, educators and support workers face daily with respect and compassion to your audience. Keep up the great work and hope to see you back here in Australia on tour soon.

As a fellow Aussie I experienced a similar situation as Jim in the early eighties with a work colleague that had muscular dystrophy. “Stevie” was employed at the same aviation maintenance facility as I was and his job was to overhaul aircraft spark plugs. Each morning at the start of the day, I would walk by his work area and say “Good Morning Stevie...keeping out of trouble?”
One day after my usual greeting Stevie hauled himself out of his chair and with much difficulty chased me down and said, “why do you ask if I’m keeping out of trouble every time you walk past me without offering any other intelligent conversation.” Suddenly the penny dropped and to my everlasting shame, I suddenly realised that I had in my ignorance I had associated a disabled body with a disabled mind! After then having a real conversation I realised that this young man was probably smarter than me and my other work colleagues combined.
Still being naive and condescending, I arranged a collection at work for Stevie to employ a hooker that specialised in the disabled.
Not sure how that worked out but I did hear that he successfully completed a number of exams for public service that would have put him four pay grades higher than anything I was likely to achieve...

I didn't talk until I was 3. I relate to the whole "masking" concept. I pretty much learned my communication skills by copying youtube videos and reading more books. I've never been diagnosed with anything. I draw animation about 60+ hours a week. I have a few very close friends, but pretty much no interest in socializing more than a couple hours a week at most. I like people, as long as I don't have to talk too much.

Great episode guys. As to whether Asperger's is no longer a diagnosed condition. It has been removed from the most recent DSM (which is the manual used to describe conditions), which is used in the USA (& Australia as far as I know) but it's still a sub-group of Autism in the ICD (the manual used in Europe).

You have may have noticed I've been commenting on several podcasts just discovered this the other day and it's very interesting
I noticed a distinct difference in Kelly forest's and Jim's comfort level talking about autism from the beginning to the end of the podcast
Jim seemed extremely uncomfortable and scared of saying something offensive which is on like him you could tell he was well out of his comfort zone but by the end of the podcast he was more his regular self and making jokes
I think this is the beauty of this podcast in particular and in general bringing what might be considered uncomfortable subjects into public conversation
You covered many topics around autism but the thing I took away from it is to not be afraid of it and to discuss it and educate yourself and others
I think ignorance can only exist in the dark and the more light you shed on something and the more you educate yourselves and others the better it will be great job love your podcast
