  • I have never seen so much static that you could hear and see it arching, crazy! A quick comparison of Canon Varioprint vs. Konica Minolta. It is very interesting to see the differences between the two machines. Print quality is good with both machines so far.
    A quick sneak peak into the hard cover book production machines that I have gotten. I'll only be producing certain hard cover books in-house.

    IMHO the KM has some kind of adjustment problem. It should be able to hold grayscale down to 3-4%. Check the driver settings under print quality. If I had to guess, its defaulted to Presentation (which increases contrast). Switching to Photographic should optimize grayscale. FWIW

    I had two Varioprint 130 at my last print shop and they outran pretty much any machine I've used since the original Docutech 135. Fantastic quality, gradients and consistency.
    Two things I noticed:
    It curled heavier cover stock pretty aggressively
    I occasionally got dirty spots of extra toner in a run. The machine usually notices and cleans the drum but you have to locate those sheets and pull them out (or over run).
    KM was my preferred color machine since they also lay down a more offset (flat) looking image and, when kept up on service, made some fantastic quality prints.

A printer friend of mine uses several production printers and mentioned this issue and he's using a commercial filtration unit for toner dust.

    You will be fine on the 115. No waste toner to worry about. Take note on the pick up roller and separator. And also to wipe the internal with a wet cloth to ensure no excessive paper dust in paper path way. Not so good in running letter head or pre printed paper as the residue might stick on the drum belt. Hi, your videos are very informative and enjoyable to watch.
    In a previous video you said that your KM presses are able to print carbonless all day, is this a joke or have you really had the opportunity to print a lot of carbonless in a row? I have a KM 2060 under contract and the technician who service it has strongly advised me against printing carbonless on a regular basis or in quantities of more than several thousand sheets because, according to him, it cause a build up of chemical on the rollers of the machine that should be avoided. I bought a second hand Riso Comcolor to print carbonless, but I have problems with the paper passage whereas on my Konica press I never have any jam or double!
    I was also wondering if you collate the carbonless sheets with your Horizon collator and if it works well or if you have collating problems?
    Thanks and I look forward to watching your videos!

    Hi Dan, I am an offset printer from 1m years ago. I watch your channel and think I would love to get back into the game but, for me, I would struggle with the pre-press origination and the transfer and set-up of the machines themselves. I don't follow the "click count" concept and why that is so important, or how that impacts the cost of production. I have so many more questions I would like to ask machinist to machinist, but Pennsylvania is a long way from Western Australia. Anyhow great following along and seeing the new age of printing which is so radically different from how I got started in printing in the dinosaur age of 1967. Great work and good luck with your expansion into case binding. I shall keep watching with interest.

    • @miatacollector
      @miatacollector 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      there is a counter in every digital machine that counts A4 (usually) pages. Most shops are under a service contract with the representative of the manufacturer and pay a standard fee per click. The price is of course higher for color than BW and also smaller for more productive/robust machines. This price includes everything from consumables (except from paper) down to servicing fees etc.
      Dan is servicing his machines alone but he can still estimate his cost per click after adding up consumables+downtime+service hours he spends. In this way he can make offers that leave him with a standard profit margin and he can still offer competitive prices.
      So knowing your click count is very very important and it gives you a very accurate estimate of the daily/monthly/yearly costs and margins.

      @@miatacollector Thanks for that Konstantinos, I used to service and maintain my offset machines, which have a manufacturer-recommended service cycle. which often due to pressure of deadlines etc. was not always adhered to, however, I would try to make sure bearings and other moving parts were kept well oiled and clean. Offset's do not have an internal counter to guide and collate the number of impressions through the machine, which might have been a useful feature. thanks again for your response.

    • @miatacollector
      @miatacollector 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ericthered982 digital machines have estimates for consumables and they dispay in the menu, the good thing with digital presses is that many modules are user replaceable and if you replace them the machine works as brand new (toner, fuser, you don't just add tonner dust, you replace the whole cartridge). There are of course moving parts, a lot of belts, bearings and some electronic boards that break after a while. I would recommend a servicing contract at least untill you get back to speed, if you decide you want to get into the digital printing game. After this you could probably service your own machines and call a technician only during high production seasons.

    • @ericthered982
      @ericthered982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miatacollector Yeah, a good suggestion. Just watching dan at work I imagine that the internals of the machines would be a very dusty environment, with paper dust, toner, developer, etc. and in Dan's shop the bare concrete floor, which must have an impact on moving parts. Just how dusty is the environment inside the covers and how often do you need to clean them out before they start to affect the work?

    • @miatacollector
      @miatacollector 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ericthered982 it really depends on the paper stock you run. If you run mostly uncoated and cheaper book paper, it really affects you, so you run around with compressed air blowing everything, cleaning everything. Toner is not a problem the majority is fused. The machines do have filters and brushes that minimize the issue, but there are spots that accumulate dust after a while. The gradient issue Dan faces in the KM machine might be due to dust.

      I’ve been working on all copiers for over 30 years, what you need to do is just Google that part, me personally my company used to be an authorized Canon dealer, but I have no connection to cannon now we switched to Konica Minolta, you need to look up /google some Canon dealers and talk to those people they’re all over the Internet ,you need to Google to find out the age of that machine if that machine is more than 6 or 7 yrs old you’re finished, you might not want to talk to the dealers if you’re looking for some cheap price that’s probably not happening either, just trying to help go to the source nobody out here has that part only the dealers if it’s still available.

Currently we need to decide between a Konica and a Canon production printer; At the local expo we have seen both and this video has helped us a lot to understand both options. As a konica tech, I can say that the 1200 is a older generation machine and half tones were not that great but the solids are great. The new generation 6136 series addresses that problem. N another note, there is a lot of aftermarket "H" toners that are out there that are causing quality issues with all of the machines. There is a fix that requires a firmware update and software dip switches to be activated.

    I have noticed that the hardcover bound books I bought in recent years are actually perfect bound books glued into hardcover cases. To me this indicates that perfect bind glues are sufficiently advanced to do the job. Is there really any value anymore to sew bindings?

    • @leooglecevac4586
      @leooglecevac4586 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely. They open flatter, and can be repaired easier. Once the glue on PUR bindings fails the pages fall out, sewn bindings can be reglued as the thread will not degrade nearly as fast. Sewn books can open super flat, often with no gutter at all, PUR can never do this. Sure there’s other benefits but these are two good ones.

    • @scottfranco1962
      @scottfranco1962 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@leooglecevac4586 Ok, but:
      1. PUR glue does not grow old and fail like previous glues did.
      2. Not true. There are layflat perfect bindings. The way it is done is a flexible backing is placed instead of gluing directly to the cover, and the backing is glued to the cover in a way that allows it to fan out. As mentioned, many or even most hardcover books are now done this way. They add a cloth outer edge to simulate sew bindings. Try opening a modern hardcover and you will probably find that it is actually a perfect bound in disguise.
