I don't understand sellers that insist on telling you how much they spent on repairs. Its irrelevant to the value of the vehicle, unless its a major required service that knowing it was done means you won't have to do it. Looking at you Audi/VW TSI timing belt changes...

That PO420 code on my Toyota was caused by a simple vacuum leak ... a tiny hose had popped off. Trimmed off the split end, reattached and it cleared multiple fault codes.

I've known several people who really liked their Vibes. I would definitely try O2 sensors before replacing the cat. Plus just giving it a general tune up which can help with the emissions code as well. Could also be an exhaust leak somewhere. I would also clear all the codes and see if the crankshaft position sensor and knock sensor codes even come back, as they could have been from misfire events or some such. I think you will be able to get it sorted out cheap in the end! Good deal.

Any tips on what to have a mechanic look at as preventive maintenance? Or, what to even replace before it goes out due to being at 156,000. Shocks, struts, tranny, engine look ok. No clue about water pump etc. Thanxs!

We road tripped all over Iowa in that thing and it’s still going strong at 250,000 miles. If you have a knock sensor error, you may have rodent damage to the wiring (on the backside of the engine). I tried everything but what worked best was enclosing that wiring in a wire loom from our local got-everything hardware store. We were told that the wiring is made with rubber that contains soybean oil (how very green of them) and rodents love to chew on it.

If you haven't done anything with the PO420, magnaflow makes a bolt in cat, for about 120 bucks. O2 sensors from GM/Toyota aren't terribly priced. The 3K for the trans was the dude getting ripped off, C59 and clutch will run you at least 700, at most 1300, labor for them is about 2.5hrs in and out if you can get the back motor mount cooperating. Can't speak for the CPS or knock sensor, as my vibe never had that issue. Hope everything with it went well

I used to live in Richmond, VT in the '80s. Sadly I didn't really recognize anything in your shots from there. Now I live in farm country in the "big valley". We just got a dusting of snow that melted off by10:30 am. That Vibe looks like it is a score. It was made in the plant that now builds Teslas. It was a Toyota joint venture with GM called "NUMI" then I think. Toyota learned that they could get American workers to perform as well as their Japanese ones. Evidently GM didn't pay attention and had to learn how to get quality work out of UAW members later on.

There is a TSB for the Matrix for fuel mix LEAN when temperatures are below 0C/32F due to a leaking intake manifold gasket. Super easy to change, and it is less than $15 from the dealer. Aftermarket was actually more expensive in my area, and the one from the dealer is of a different design. I bought the gasket at the Toyota dealer for my Vibe. I wonder if that is contributing to the p0420 code on yours.

P0420--give the secondary O2 sensor a try. My 05 Accord stick shift threw that code all the time and that sensor was very temperamental. Use a Toyota OEM sensor. Unless the previous owner was driving around on 3 cylinders for ages the cat shouldn't be fouled out!

These are really reliable cars, but the 5 speed manual transmission is a bit of a weak point. They have a tendency to lock up solid due to the phenolic input shaft bearing seizing. Check the fluid level, make sure no leaks at the seals, and make sure to be wary of unusual noises. Other than that, the engine is well known to go 400-500,000 miles on the original timing chain if maintained properly. Also beware that the odometer in all 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla/Matrix and Pontiac Vibe will STOP at 299,999 whether reading miles or kms. The seatbelt nanny is one of the most annoying ones I have ever encountered, but it can be disabled using a very simple button-press procedure on the dash.

I HATE the Pontiac vibe and Toyota matrix. I almost didn't get my current car because I didn't trust Toyota. I had an 09 vibe as my first car and I had nothing but problems at 30,000 miles. It was a first car my parents thought it was a great deal because it was sitting and had low mileage, I bought it back in 2015, so they thought it was a great deal and I had nothing but issues. Car randomly shut off as I'm driving down the highway it would shut off in the middle of turns first week I had it it shut off and I almost hit a tree, it was a total piece of junk. Never threw a check engine light at me, except when the engine turned off. This was back before I got into fixing vehicles, so maybe it was an easier fix, but I was at the mechanic every single week. I was spending more and repairs to that car, then I am in making payments and increased insurance on my new car. Just in time and labor costs me nearly 800 bucks a month with that old car. I hated it

I wanna get one but I hear these have unreliable manual transmissions. I don’t know how that’s even possible to make an unreliable stick shift.

@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 I just bought one in June this year, the only issue is down shifting into first is almost impossible for some reason. Starting from a dead stop it's fine. and it had 141,000 miles on when I bought it. other than the starter dying out nothing bad so far. I get about 34mpg and around 28 city

I thought it sounded pretty shifty when you bought for 800 bucks and it ran fine until you ran the tests. Especially if he put like $ 4000 into it and sold it to you for 800.

Its a manual vibe, hope they didnt make them a lot besides transmission change for that would have been cheap to replace🤔 compared to automatic😀👍✌👌
