MISSED: 4 Free Throws Cost NICK ANDERSON His Career! Stunted Growth

  • What Intrigued me most about this story was the admitted mental affect it had on the player ever since missing those free throws that got them swept by the Houston Rockets in 1995. Just 1 of those missed shots could’ve won the game and who knows, maybe even give the team the momentum needed to defeat Houston, in a 90s era where winning championships were tough to come by. Nick Anderson stated himself that he’s never really been the same since and it showed in his free-throw shooting and production in general in the years after. Anderson was on the verge of becoming a star in Orlando, and the magic with the addition of Penny Hardaway, in just his second year, made it to the NBA finals after having missed the playoffs all together in Nick Anderson’s first 4 years. He was the best player in his state in high school, parade and McDonald’s all American, star freshman and all conference sophomore, to being good enough to leave school early and enter the NBA draft, taken 11th overall. Entering the NBA, Nick was thought to be the perfect shooting guard for the new era. 6’6, great footwork, athletic, could play high level defense and when he finally got his 3pt shot to fall in the league, he was on path too becoming one of the best in that area as well. That very 94-95 season he shot a career high 41% from 3. That declined every year after. What happened to Nick Anderson? Who should’ve been one of the greatest shooting guards in NBA history. MISSED: 4 Free Throws Cost NICK ANDERSON His Career! Stunted Growth

The crazy thing is that he had always been clutch until that moment. He had always played with a lot of energy and confidence before the misses. Nick missing those free throws is over blown. If Nick hits those free throws the Magic STILL lose the series, but instead of it being a sweep, they would’ve lost 4-1 (IMO). That Orlando Magic team was just doomed for failure and it mostly had to do with timing as oppose to a lack of talent. The Orlando Magic rose to notoriety at the same time as the Houston Rockets were dominating the interim period of Jordan’s first retirement and were still intact as Jordan’s Bulls usurped the Rockets as the top team in the NBA. Also factor in that in a few years Penny would’ve had started to experience injuries that would drastically reduce his impact, a person with keen insight would notice that the Orlando Magic still wouldn’t have done much, with or without Shaq or Nick Anderson’s made free-throws.

Man this one hurts because I remember watching him miss those free throws and it took all the energy from that squad they never recovered. Nick should have took his time at the line once he started beating on the ground I knew it was over. He just wasn’t the same player really sad story but overall he was a solid pro during his era
