FYI you absolutely can damage SU-122 and other T-34 based vehicles with .50, you have enough pen to engine deck and in some cases turret roof them even at a rather forgiving angle. It's a recent change but it made US CAS even more dangerous overall.
Another benefit of Russian vehicles is that their sloped armor on the sides is flat on if you attack with a comfortable dive. No need to risk a top down.
@@Kraus- yeah except that requires more than 45mm of pen. Which basically only Russian aircraft have in autocannon form. Then there’s the German duck and whatever

Initially p51 was crap because the US simply didn't have the technology to make a decent engine for it. Once they got a British engine with way higher power to weight ratio it suddenly drastically improved
It's also worth noting that on most Korean War and earlier US tanks, the .50 cal acts in game like a remote weapons station, wheras in reality the tank comd in most cases would need to be massively exposed to use the .50 against ground targets (in many cases standing on the engine deck, or with the turret traversed to the rear to point the .50 forwards).
To be honest the .50 in war thunder seems to be firing tungsten darts only lol, it's somehow more effective at penetrating targets than anti tank rifles are in Enlisted...
@@lwgrazi Don't call a tank destroyer an AA lol. M19 is only good with AP, unless you have perfect aim and go with tap shots. I have destroyed more tanks that planes in that thing. the worst thing is it has two gunners yet if one gets knocked out, it stops working. I would accept each one to work the horizontal and vertical slower. And planes love spraying this thing long range because there is no armour on top and the turret is too slow to track properly But it is good puma killer on long range. Just carry full ammo and press W. See a puma, spray. One or two will make it anyway.
Contraereo is amazing ever since they switched from the b.s. box mags to full belt ammo. You can blow through all 400+ rounds in like 30 seconds and then drive around like a crazy person trying to get to a cap to get ammo back. Also its an AA. WITH SMOKE LAUNCHERS. Honestly, most AA are the most fun you can have in War Thunder. If you learn to dodge and hide between buildings to control how often a plane can see you, and only ambush fire at it when its close, you can get 5+ plane kill games. People in their premium CAS planes get salty AF that their Do 335 powertrip was immediately ended when a good AA player is on the map.
Bro the m16 is way to overpowered when it is 3.0 below against tanks I got a 7 kill game with the m16. And the dauntless flies like a brick but those 6 50. Cals are fun to play with against planes. And I literally bring the dauntless to 5.7 and I still somehow get kills
An ordinary heavy machine gun, no worse and no better than others. BUT, in this game, not people are sitting in the planes, but robots for which it is not difficult to take any plane out of a dive at any speed and any angle of attack. A simple example: when diving with an angle of more than 30 degrees, the pilot of the Hs-129 did not have enough physical strength to deflect the rudders. In the game, we can take the Hs-129 out of a dive at any speed and angle.
Finally someone brings out my absolute favorite p51 variant, being the a-36 just because you get it at such a low br and dont have to worry about bringing it with you to higher brs, ive had success even in 6.0 with my a-36

Title edit: "50 Cals are far too strong." We Canadians have tried multiple times now to ditch the 50BMG, but every time we get into a conflict, we loan or buy a few M2s again from the Americans. You just have to accept the 50BMG was and still is a very effective cartridge. It was originialy an anti tank cartridge, so well into ww2 it was still very effective against most light tanks. Beyond that it was still good for suppressing heavier vehicles, damaging or destroying sights and view blocks.
"I think my teammates are strafing ground targets at 45 degree angles and ignoring this 109." Yeah that sounds about 1000% like the norm. I had a match just yesterday, in my Mosquito FB the one with the damn 57mm cannon and I was the only person who fought and noticed air planes despite being in an overweight attacker. I got more air kills than anyone at 4 in my Mosquito, half with the 57mm shooting down a bomber and Stuka and half with the .303 MGs, and knocked out 4 ground targets with the 57mm. All the fighters spent most of their small caliber rounds shooting at tanks that would never be hurt by them.
That's why I've stopped bringing attackers into the air and just bring dedicated air superiority fighters. Especially in the higher tiers, a few CAS planes can destroy your team. Besides, a plane costs like 3-4x the spawn points of a tank, so this drains their players more if you're successful.
@@reinbeers5322 Oh nothing is more miserable than spawning an attacker or plane with 3/4's of your SP only to get clipped by a fighter before you can get to the battle. It legitimately is one of the best ways to win though.

This was the reason 6 X .50 was retained on air force fighters, like the F-80, F-84, F-86, F-84F. The only consideration that made the US Navy go 4 X 20 mm instead, was that they wanted the shrapnel against ground targets. First of all a flight speed of 500kph add about 140m/s , that's like a strong softgun . The Tiger 1 top engine cover has 25mm and such top down attacks as you see in WT are very dangerous . No pilot would do this or went that close to the target and ground . This old .50 cals rounds pen about 20-25mm max. point blank 90° , there are many videos online of such testings . So it's quite rare to even see a Tiger 1 and to knock out his engine with a plane , sure it has happened but that's not the major order of a plane to strafe tanks with .50 cals .
@@5co756 Well, the one point you're really wrong about, is the "like a strong softgun" part. That is only true about that particular 140m/s difference between 0m/s and 140m/s. The other 140m/s difference between 890m/s and 1030m/s is something completely different. Just ask your nearest gun nut if you don't believe me. The .50 round used as standard by US WW2 fighters, exited at a muzzle energy of >17KJ. This round could comfortably, completely penetrate >20 mm of hardened steel at 100m from standstill. (It was required to penetrate 22.2mm at 100yards for acceptance) Adding 504km/h to that gives us a muzzle energy of >22.8KJ, a 34% increase. If we were to (wrongly) assume the increase in penetration is directly proportional to increased energy, that would give us 29mm+ clear penetration. Unfortunately for the armor, the case is much more complicated. The short of it, is that if you try to stop a harder projectile with a thin hard barrier, the velocity and power output of the projectile is going to work against you. The hardness of your barrier is going to have less effect, moving the process more towards fluid dynamics. To stop the 890m/s projectile in 22mm, the armor has to defeat 344.5MW. To stop the 1030m/s projectile in 22mm, the armor has to defeat 534MW, a 55% increase. To stop the 1030m/s projectile in 25mm, the armor has to defeat 470MW, still a 36% increase. To stop the 1030m/s projectile in 30mm, the armor has to defeat 391.5MW, still a 13.6% increase. That's most of it, I think. Sure this is a game. But authentic WW2 gun camera films, of P-47s setting Tiger tanks on fire, with their .50s, exist here on TH-cam. I've seen them myself. I'm sorry I haven't put in the time to find a link for you. But right, it sure doesn't look like it does in the game, at all (basically, it starts smoking and the crew abandons it a while later).
@@Vermiliontea It does'nt matter much if you put 140m/s more to a projectile , if the impact angle is not 90° . It loses a huge amount of penetration at 60 or 30° , I saw 14,5mm AT rifles do almost nothing cause they hit at a slight angle . It works in WT cause you can make top down attacks , wich give you almost a 90° angle . It's a game , you can't die irl . So you make risky maneuvers , wich no pilot would do irl . We need balance in WT , you can't make everything historical accurate .
@@5co756 I mostly agree with most of that. But just so we know what we're talking about: The 'Relative Armor Thickness' through 25mm: 90 deg = 25 mm 60 deg = 28.9 mm 50 deg = 32.6 mm 40 deg = 38.9 mm 30 deg = 50 mm A projectile going fast enough, is not going to bother much with being deflected. Being deflected by angled surfaces is for slower projectiles. At higher velocities, the contact forces will go through the roof and the projectile will increasingly perceive the armor as a fluid. Our numerical comparisons are made at muzzle energies. The performance is known for 100 yards and 22.2 mm hardened steel plate. Obviously, an aircraft will shoot at longer distances, but it will also be slightly helped by the projectiles higher starting altitude, not enough to compensate for the longer distance though. We know the 22.2 mm armor cannot defeat 17KJ at 344 MW. What can 25 mm armor defeat? Isn't the engine cover perforated? What if the speed is 594km/h? Adding 165m/s and 40.5% energy. Then the armor would have to defeat 23.9 KJ at 324.5 MW, in order to stop the bullet in 38.9 mm (40deg). That it can probably do. But to stop it in 32.6 mm (50deg), it has to defeat 23.9KJ at 387.2 MW, and I don't believe it can do that, since it seems significantly harder to do, than 22 mm for the 890m/s projectile, which we know it can't do. Going back to 504km/h, we get 22.8KJ at 360 MW, (50deg) and I don't think it can stop that either.

Most WWII-era guns aren't something you'd see on anything modern, but the .50 cal is eternal. Because it works. And it works. And it works.
MG42 has survived the years with many modifications, you can find the most modern variant as the MG3
The 12.7×99mm and M2HB will eventually go but for now it seems eternal. Belgium tries to replace ut with the 15.5mm MG but that didn't seem to work
As said befor, the MG42 too, thought, the MG42 might survive longer, as it is, per definition, more versitil.

But just so we know what we're talking about: The 'Relative Armor Thickness' through 25mm:
90 deg = 25 mm
60 deg = 28.9 mm
50 deg = 32.6 mm
40 deg = 38.9 mm
30 deg = 50 mm
A projectile going fast enough, is not going to bother much with being deflected.
Odd i love your content any plans on making more "a war thunder story" videos those always seem to be the most suspenseful like im watching an actual movie.thanks for the videos :,)
Games like those are super rare. I can't script them so they just come as they are!
you should do a video on the zsu-57, and use it as an anti air :)
Odd always funds the best paid actors in the game..
its like mig-3-34 on steroids
STILL CRAVING FOR THIS ARL44 VIDEO BAWZZZZ PLZZZZZ, keep going like this mate yur da best
Please do the M42 Contraereo. The thing is an Italian wirbelwind with higher firerate that doesn't have to reload. Extremely fun and easy to use. You could pair it with the re 2001 or the C 205, bith pretty good props!
id like to see a vid with the the flakrakrad
We rode into battle in an M113 without a care in the world... Then I saw a destroyed Iraqi M113 full of .50 cal holes and on fire on the side of the road... Respect the .50.
Hey odd can you make a video about j7e i would love to see how it would handle in ground rb
If you're scouted the binoculars will be white with a circle in the bottom left
the zut-37 requests a spot in your line up.
50, cals are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too strong now literallly 5 shoot from it track gone barrel gone meanwhile 30 mm cannon milion rounds onto cannon yellow nooice.
GAZ 72 is a very good AA at like 2.7 or something that once is fun for both AA and anti tank
would love to see you play the flak panzer 341/Coelian
before the buff to 50 cals i got a 7 kill game in an m13 also could you play the Sweden 2.7 lineup.
What server does he play? He sure as hell isn't playing US. I've started playing SA and EU because it's easier than playing US. Either that or he has the luckiest matchmaking in the history of gaming and someone should make a documentary on his amazing luck.
I needed this video. Currently waiting to see if support can give me back the GE that some Russian script kiddie spent today. This makes me feel a little better.
Hey BawZ
New subscriber here
Just wanted to say thanks
For all the content and good humour and nature of yourself
You Iron Armenian and Spookston have convinced me to play WT
I didn't realise until about my fith game with the a36 that it had an airbrake
How's your dog doing Odd? And zis-12 milk truck for another AA video would be good
Nice content as always!
you should do one using only the biggest guns possible
my AAs gonna eat well. Actually i get like 3 kills in Corsair even with 6 50cals....you dont really need these pods.
Other calibres please Odd. Is this possible in 20mm, 37mm, 303!?
For 37mm the Zsu 37 and the yak 9T
20mm with the crusader aa and mosquito
Bf 110 G-2 and Ostwind.
Though, that's a pretty poor combo.
try using the amx13 dca, the 40mm bofors aa, its really fun to play
This just showed how broken planes are vs tanks
john moses browning stirring in his grave: real shit?
hey odd, whens your new decal coming out
Why do I never get that lucky when I fly planes
現在的50 已經比德軍的20mm 還要有效了,不管是穿透還是傷害
空軍的部分更加過分
如果當初真的這麼有效且致命,那為何作戰的時候卻要避免與德軍接觸
To be fair, it was designed for both roles!
the lvkv 42 AA is awesome i love it.. maybe play that? 👌
The M19A1 twin bofors for americans, im trying but i cant seem to shoot down planes
What’s the music you use in the intro? It sounds so familiar
