Great interview.i found it very helpful in understanding the souls journey. Lawrence has great presence,he is speaking from his experience.wonderful listening to his voice.
What we love often becomes the cause of our suffering... To the most of us, following is what is most dear: Mind. Body. Lover/wife/husband. Children. Parents. Siblings. Friends... ...usually in that order... To the most of us, this is what torments us, troubles us and causes us most suffering... Mind. Body. Lover/wife/husband. Children. Parents. Siblings. Friends... ...usually in that order...
To care is to be willing to suffer... Those of us who don't care for environment... ...don't suffer the thoughts of impending environmental disaster... Those of us who don't care for the animal diversity... ...don't suffer the thoughts of disappearing animal species... Those of us who don't care for the disabled... ...don't suffer the thoughts of their pain and suffering... Those of us who don't care for the poor... ...don't suffer the thoughts of their pain and suffering... Those of us who don't care for the African Americans and their long history of slavery, segregation and discrimination... ...don't suffer the thoughts of their pain and suffering... Those of us who don't care for the American Indians and the long history of injustice to them... ...don't suffer the thoughts of their pain and suffering...
Those of us who don't care for the natural beauty, wild animal habitat, the natural wilderness... don't suffer the thoughts of oil pipeline passing through the wilderness.
What distinguishes normal physical and mental pain from suffering is the idea of *victimhood*, "helplessness", it is the idea that "it is happening to me against my own will", "I don't have a choice in the matter and I wish I did"... it is the idea that "I didn't choose it".
Someone making a five hours long trip, missing work and losing wages in order to protest against an oil pipeline... might still suffer the economic consequences and the physical hardship... but, knowing that "I am doing it out of my own will"*... takes the suffering out of it. Someone running a 17 miles marathon still goes through physical hardship... but, knowing that "I am doing it out of my own will"*... takes the suffering out of it. Someone going through a strenuous hike goes through physical difficulty even pain... but, knowing that "I am doing it out of my own will"*... takes the suffering out of it. Someone going through a long fasting without food and water goes through physical discomfort... but, knowing that "I am doing it out of my own will"*... takes the suffering out of it. A mother going through child labor goes through great physical discomfort... but, knowing that "I am doing it out of my own will"*... takes the suffering out of it. ==== *"I am doing it out of my own will"* , "I am doing it because I think it is good to do", "I am doing it because I want to do it", "I am making conscious choice to do it", "I am doing it because I think it is the best among all available choices", "I am doing because I think this is the best thing to do"...
Key to remove suffering (from the physical and mental pain) then is to... ...realize... that I am doing what I am doing... out of my own will, out of my choice... and, what I experience right now is the natural consequence of the choice I am making. Any moment, we reach at this understanding... the physical and mental pain might still remain... but, the suffering disappears.
The matter of "choice" ultimately comes to the core belief itself... Do I choose to believe that I am a human body-mind? Do I choose to believe that I am an entity that lives in time? Do I choose to believe that I am an entity that is born on certain date and will die on a certain date? Do I choose to believe that I am a human body-mind with a really separate, independent, autonomous time-bound existence that I freely choose all my thoughts, feelings and actions independent of everything else? Do I choose to believe the above about other people too? In what way, what I experience right now... is a consequence of what I believe right now?

You cannot travel on the path until you become the path itself.
With borrowed metaphors like this, you could give Rick a break and host a few batgap interviews.
