So gets called out for lying. Then denies it by lying.

      Chris Pitchforth
You will notice that they never speak of the stories written in the Bible or any of it's subjects?
You notice they'll choose a subject like telling lies then embellish how great god is.
The people are bad but God is good.
Every church I went into they wanted to tell me of my problems and financial woes When I really had none.

Old and tried tactic that still works. I know of an orange moron who consistently gets called out on his lies and then lies and calls those would called him out "fake news". The tactic works.

Mike, for the mentally challenged. Plus, please remember a lot of people live in an alternate reality than us. Like my cousin, when I was 6 & he was 4, his parents followed him around like he was Tutankhamen. I looked at my dad & said, "What'll happen to him when he gets drafted?" My dad looked to the sky, shook his head & said, "Reality will come crashing down." It did. He's permanently insane.
He insists that his dad who was dirt poor, had a motor yacht down in Mission Bay & at midnight after working 10 hours a day would go out find a naked child & take him out & rape &beat & torture him & dump the body overboard. by the way, it was a 2 hour trip both ways to the ocean. It was an hour drive from his work to his house as well.

I find it so insane when someone says "here is a belief I hold and a code I live by"
Then you point out that they have violated their own code
Then they go "well, you don't live by this code anyway, so you have no right to point out that I've broken it!"
Yes, we do. If you claim to live a life where you are an honest person, and someone demonstrates that you are not an honest person, you're the one with the problem, not the guy pointing it out.

Eric Smith So let me get this straight.
-The Bible doesn't state an exact date for the beginning so that's somehow proof that the Earth is not 6000 years old even though it, again does not establish a specific time period. Not dendrochronology or radiometric dating.
-It's obvious that God made the Earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th. As if I could go outside, look at the world, and then conclude, "Yep. The Earth was obviously made in 6 days by a God who rested afterwards." That's why people need a book to tell them that.

As a retired science teacher I love it when I learn new things about science that I didn't know. I had no idea that we could calculate a difference in the rate that the moon is moving away based on the configuration of the continents, but I'm fascinated by that. I do wonder, however, why there is no discussion of the origin of the moon itself.

Another great video Paul. Well done.
I watched all Potholer54’s content before I found your channel and I love that it is getting a fresh airing here. I really love the way you present it in your charming style and in the context of your series on Eric Hovind. Potholer54 certainly loathes Kent even more than Eric I think. It’s kinda like you are now engaged in a second generation battle between decent honest rational people who accept science vs the the lying, self enriching creationists who ignore and disparage it. Although I think the good guys have greater numbers now and thanks to people like you, more exponents able to reach more and different people. Thanks for your work. It’s really important.
For “first generation” debunking of creationist nonsense, Potholer54 is still great IMHO. He now focuses on Climate Change denial, which I fear is even more scary and important... He has a very devoted following for that material and I really recommend it for anyone concerned about the phoney debate that is polluting progress on that issue.
Anyway, kudos for pointing everyone at his channel. He deserves 10x as many subscribers as he has right now :)
As do you of course. Scouts honour, I will give you both a shout out in comments from now on!

My 15 year old figured out years ago that if they have to lie to prove their point, it's because they know what they are really selling is crap. Ken Ham made my daughter an atheist. So good job, Ken.

What harm would it do, if a man told a good strong lie for the sake of the good and for the Christian church… a lie out of necessity, a useful lie, a helpful lie, such lies would not be against God, he would accept them.

I think the simplest analogy would be compound interest, although the math on that is more complicated than I'd like, so I'm just going to use words.
If a flat interest rate counts the initial amount of money in an account and applies a flat rate to it, then the amount gained every time the interest is applied stays the same. You put in 100$, you have a 5% interest rate monthly, that means at the end of the year you have 160$ because 5% of 100$ for twelve months would be 5$*12 which is 60$. I used math. I'm not going to calculate the next bit though.
Compound interest isn't a flat rate. You put in 100$, and then it applies the rate to it for the first month. Next month, it applies the rate to the new amount, 105$, giving you slightly more than the first five dollars. Over time, the amount of interest being applies will get higher and higher. If you remove money, you get a smaller amount of interest. The smaller the total, the smaller the interest. Compound interest from 95$ wouldn't amount to 100$, because while the flat rate was 5% applied to 100$ meaning 5$ a pop, the compound version would apply 5% to 95$, which isn't 5$. It's 4.75$. Five percent of 10$ would be fifty cents, which is quite different from five dollars.
The Moon will escape faster and faster over time as the forces involved push and pull in different amounts. This means that as you go back in time, it's escaping slower and slower. Eric, being homeschooled by a functionally illiterate violently abusive psychopath conman, can only understand a simple linear growth. If it's 1 degree hotter today than it was yesterday, then the world will end before three months pass as temperatures rise one degree per day forever, and humanity could not even exist as a mere two months ago it was so far below freezing that every human froze solid where they stood, and a year ago from today it would've been -365 degrees Celsius, which is impossible because absolute zero is -273C.
The real world doesn't work the way simple-minded abused parrot-like simpletons like Eric think it does. Assuming Eric is capable of thinking, which is _not_ a given.
*as a note, I'm probably using flat interest and compound interest incorrectly and inaccurately, but I figured it'd do for simple examples using familiar terminology. That's why I said "if". I can't imagine any bank giving you the same interest deposit on the initial amount of money in your account after you take all of it back out again. I am _not_ a banker, it probably shows. Still not as stupid as Eric Hovind.

Glad to see you put this video up, you do understand the math involved is actual estimates of past continental movement, not a factual known number? So for a scientist to make these calculation it requires an estimate of past events which no one has data on. In making estimates one can always move the numbers to favor their position. Even using 1/2 values you will get to a point the tides washes over continents far before the 1.2 billion years needed. At 1.5 inches a year at this time, your looking at a point in history of water not being retain in it's basins and over flowing it's containment, this is long before your get to 1.2 billion years ago.

    • @Paulogia
      @Paulogia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You'll notice I wasn't making the science claim here, but talking about Eric's lying about lying. But let's set that aside.
"Using half values"... half values of what? Of Eric's linear idea. We know it's not linear, so it doesn't matter what percent of it you take, it's not relevant.
But perhaps you meant something else, and I definitely want to know what the real science is, so can you point me to more information on this basin retaining problem? Does secular science address this at all, and if so what is the objection and the counter to the objection?

    • @Tellgryn
      @Tellgryn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Paulogia, what I am saying is you're calling him a liar based on estimates of the math to get to the 1.2 billion date, all we have for now is 1.5 inches for the moon's recession from the Earth, based on that number he is correct or very near correct on the math. The estimates of changing that number brings in many multiple factors and 1 of the major ones is past continental movement, and all these factors are best estimates (these numbers can be fudged to make your case on either side of the disagreement). But as I posted you still run into the problem of the water on the surface of the earth, as the moon gets closer the water will run over the containment and wash over the surface of the earth long before the 1.2 billion year date. making the land uninhabitable.

Nice work on this one, Paul. You're exactly right; it was the smug dishonesty of the Creationists who came to speak at my church when I was 17 and knew just enough science to tell they weren't telling the whole truth that led me to question my faith and eventually become not only an atheist but an evolutionary biologist. My wife is a Methodist, and also a biologist. Her denomination teaches evolution is a fact and not at odds with the Bible (I disagree with that part), so she finds Creationist dishonesty even more infuriating than I do.

The Bible is entirely allegory. When viewed that way it can be very helpful to understanding our condition. Even more so if you look at the source material from which it was taken. Taking the stories literally as history is an agenda driven fiasco that has cast humanity into a very dark age for the last 1500 years or so.

Belief in Creationism requires faith in the following unobserved process:
      1. Presuppostion that a Non-Naturalistic process for life coming from non-life exists & already occurred.
Belief in Evolution Theory requires faith in the following unobserved processes:
      1. Information being added to the genome
      2. Increasing genetic complexity
      3. The primary definition of Macro-evolution (not the secondary definition "speciation" which both sides agree is real)
      4. Evolution Theory also relies on the presupposition that a Naturalistic process by which life comes from non-life exists and already occurred, despite no observations of this either.
All existing scientific evidence could be interpreted to support either side:
      1. A common designer, or
      2. A common ancestor
So what scientific or logical reason does anyone have to choose Evolutionism over Creationism? It requires faith in more processes which haven't been scientifically verified / observed.
Occam's razor is the problem-solving principle that "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity". It is generally understood in the sense that with competing theories or explanations, the simpler one, for example a model with fewer parameters, is to be preferred.
So why are many choosing the explanation which requires faith in more unobserved processes when it isn't necessary? That's not the scientific or logical approach.
      The answer is: Scientism
They're believing that whatever claims are within the current consensus of academia are automatically scientific claims. It doesn't work that way. The Methodological Naturalism requirement allows them to include their best Naturalistic explanation for questions they can't answer with observation.
“Even if all the data point to an intelligent designer (or Creationism), such a hypothesis is excluded from peer-review because it is not naturalistic. Of course the scientist, as an individual, is free to embrace a reality that transcends naturalism."
      - Dr. Scott Todd, immunologist from Kansas State University as printed in Nature Magazine
So, in effect, Scientism is causing them to blindly believe mainstream academia's consensus like a religious text without properly understanding the only reason Creationism is excluded is due to pre-existing philosophical bias, NOT because it's less scientific.
Pre-existing bias is a systematic error in the scientific method. They can't even prove Naturalism is a true philosophy.

If any husband EVER answers the question from his wife, "Does this dress make me look fat?" truthfully, "Honey, it's not the dress." He will feel the impact of a high velocity impact of a shoe against the back of his head.
While saying "No." is technically the truth, it is still a deception. The real answer your wife is most looking for is NOT if the DRESS makes he look fat, but is, in fact, "Do I look fat?"
I would love to have a married man try an experiment for me. Don't say "It's not the dress." I don't want to destroy anyones marriage, just look at her as if you are carefully considering the question. I would STRONGLY advise you eventually say, "no." But I would love to see how she reacts to this.

I’ve been a silent listener for some time and you do great work. To me, you bring two great qualities (at minimum to the table); transparency combined with well researched and documented positions, and an ability to simply express obvious logical flaws.
For example, I initially expected you to demolish Hovind’s “you don’t know God and thus can’t distinguish a lie” idiocy. But you surprised (and impressed) me with the simpler response, “so that makes it okay for you (Hovind) to lie?”
Too often we find ourselves defending ourselves rather than responding with the obvious that a lie is a lie is a lie, Mr. Hovind.

[current distance in centimeters minus age in years times centimeters change per year = 384,400,000,000-(4,500,000,000 x 3.8) = 213,400,000,000 centimeters or 213,400 kilometers.

Also, regarding morality, Matt Dillahunty makes a pretty convincing case for a sort of secular objective morality. That's where I tend to go but you do you. Just real quick, basically he says that the basis for his morality might be subjective but not arbitrary since it's human flourishing and well being but any actions in accordance with or antithetical to this end would be objectively so. He sometimes uses health as a metaphor. Are eggs healthy or unhealthy? Well it all depends if you have high blood pressure or a protein deficiency so things might not always be perfectly clear but we know for a fact that drinking gasoline is unhealthy and we don't have to be a doctor to realize that.

As a Catholic, Young Earth Creationism always seemed crazy to me and I never understood why some American fundie protestants were so adamant about it. It's bizarre, because their views aren't even representative of the beliefs of most Christians (protestants included). It's also very "American" (or North American) for some reason; European protestants, even conservative ones, aren't really YECers. From the outside looking in, it's just very bizarre. The best explanation I've found is that a strictly literalistic reading of Genesis was a way fundamentalist protestants in America came up with to justify sola scriptura and the "capacity of anyone to just read the Scriptures and understand all it teaches", contrary to (say) Catholics and Orthodox which were growing in the US at the time.

I agree with your sentiment in totality, Paul. While I don't take people's beliefs as offensive, I do draw the line at disingenuous and contemptuous statements and actions. I left the Christian church at age 14, after searching for answers for a year within the church. The statement that broke my faith? That my grandmother had died because of her sin, and the suffering she experienced before her death was justified because of said sin. My own pastor said as much to me, a man I had blindly respected for years beforehand. Statements like this are harmful, as are the intellectually false statements made by the church, are unacceptable.
This is one of the reasons why I have started to read the bible again. I am highlighting any versus that I come across that are dishonest or morally wrong. I've made it to Leviticus thus far. And I hope to share these verses with people in this small Kentucky town I live in. If you have any you feel would be good verses to highlight, let me know?
Keep up the good work. I binge watch your content every night at work. :)
