    Why the UK? Wouldn't it make more sense to have Japanese, New Zealander experts involved as well? It is true that the UK understands 'stone' buildings, but Japan and New Zealand are world leaders in earthquake proof building methods and technology.

    Turkiye needs to rethink building high apartment blocks it has plenty of land to spread out build two and single level bungalows with gardens like I have in the UK especially in those quake areas.

    • @andrewjones-productions
      @andrewjones-productions ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We have high rise apartment and office blocks here in Japan and I will politely remind you that Japan is the seismically most active country in the world. I am not a fan of high rise buildings, but it isn't what you build, but rather how you build it. A bungalow is no safer if it isn't built appropriately. However, it is also fair to say that the higher up you are in a building, the greater the shake will be. Japan has this year, just released a new earthquake warning system that also notifies the level of shake according to storey. We already have a system that informs us of the level of shake on the surface (units of shindo) which is far more useful to the ordinary person than the magnitude and depth of a quake, although these are also obviously important and are noted also.

    • @naturealbums
      @naturealbums ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@andrewjones-productions I can literally be outside my bungalow house in 3 seconds from any room inside and above me is plaster board ceiling then a bolted timber roof that is safer than any apartment block even if it's got the high tech Japanese build. I have a good garden area to the back and front so no other building is going to fall over on mine. We don't have significant earthquakes here (20 mins from London) there was a 5.8 in the 1300's near Dover. My mum lives in Istanbul and I keep telling her to sell the apartment (5th floor) and move they keep saying there is going to be a big one around Istanbul but no one knows difficult to predict.

      @andrewjones-productions ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@naturealbums I'm Welsh, I know about the earthquakes in the UK. I have also lived in Japan for the past 32 years and have witnessed several major natural disasters by now.
      There are a couple of issues with your idea of a bungalow being safe. You may have time to get outside if the earthquake builds up gradually, but once the shake is at a point that you cannot stand up and furniture stands toppling over and skidding around the room, then you will find it very, very difficult to get out. The second issue is the roof. Probably would be fine (in the Uk of course it will be), but in an earthquake prone country, it would need special tie down brackets (they are surprisingly simple) to keep them together.
      You do bring up a good point however. At the time of the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (centering on the city of Kobe and island of Awaji), there were many buildings (bungalows and two storey and more homes) that pre-dated the updated earthquake proof building regulations. They were also of a type that used the traditional ceramic roof tiles. These are incredibly heavy and their weight caused many structures to collapse. This has led to new lighter materials being used. So roofs are important.
      Furthermore, the magnitude of an earthquake alone means little. You must also know the depth of the quake. Japan has had 2 or 3 M6.0 earthquakes since the Turkey quake, but the reason why they did not make headline news is in part due to the modern infrastructure, epicentre location and depth of the quake. This is why Japan uses the 'shindo' scale in conjunction with magnitude etc. The shindo scale measures the amount of shake on the surface.

    Shoddy workmanship.obviously some of these buildings weren't vetted by appropriate professionals.Some of the damage can't be avoided as ground liquified and undulations caused buildings to topple or pancake.. but definitely alot of structural deficiencies

      You are right. Our houses are so badly insulated and too small and flimsy. Anything else? You can blame Mrs Thatcher for the shortage of public housing schemes. The cost of rents and mortgages as well. Also we have very high demand and build on unsuitable ground. The rich [and politicians] always have a good quality of life, whatever happens to the plebs away from their country estates and London enclaves. So why should they care? But if we tax them they will leave, which means disaster for us..?

      How do you know this, and in what time scale do you mean? Please state your source, so we can all look at it. We all know that the same tectonic plates will move again and that causes devastation in various regions, especially around the Pacific Rim [Tsunamis]. Even Japan cannot withstand the power of a tsunami, it seems. But they have got the required building standards in place for earth movements, as far as I know. Probably so have other nations, so they could all help enforce Turkey's corrupt construction companies to comply with Turkish construction laws.

      Some were ancient. Cities such as Antakya [formerly Antioch] were mentioned by Shakespeare. Far more ancient than that, though. There has been serious destruction of ancient structures in the historical towns.
      But buildings constructed since 1999 were subject to a more strict earthquake-proofing standard.
      The was a serious earthquake near Istanbul in 1999, with a very high death toll. Nothing like as high as this though - maybe 14,000? The laws were brought in to prevent the shoddy buildings causing deaths in future. It took years for Turkey [Turkiye] to recover from that earthquake.

      Someone told me once that at a certain stage in history, the Kurds were offered their 'own land i.e. nation'. But they declined. I find that hard to believe. Any landless group/tribe/ethnic minority is at the mercy of its hosts and they are nuisance to that host.

  • @theresenydahl9531
    @theresenydahl9531 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When you're in Turkey and you see the skeleton of a building there's no surprise it all turned to dust in seconds, even without an earthquake. Erdogan went after 102 builders who has made fortunes on building these inferior houses/death traps, some of them were caught at the airports when trying to escape to Montenegro, Serbia, Dubai and other destinations. The builders know what they have done and will hopefully be charged but the most appalling factor is that Turkish authorities are rubbish, they don't even check that builders build according to standards, they should be charged too because they are most likely taking bribes not to check.

      @sanataj ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We build on flood plains in the UK. That is very disgusting. I am sure there are perfectly qualified engineers within Turkey as well, but there is too much corruption.
      Fault lines by and large can't be avoided. I hope they will try, though. There is technology available of how to engineer even high rise buildings to withstand earth movements. Since 1999, Turkey's laws have been stricter, but the corruption of greedy builders ignored them.
      Even after construction, you can read that 'ground floor' shop [store] owners cut down columns inside their shops, to give more sales space. They were perhaps fined for it, if there were any consequences at all.
      We would call them supporting or structural columns. The weight of hundreds of people's apartments above the shop were supported by those columns. The officials must be corrupt who are supposed to check building laws are complied with. Bribery and corruption is widespread in Turkey, including in the judicial system .
