Thank you for this, I was born in 82 so Saturday Morning Cartoons from Fall 87- Spring 97 hold a special place in my heart. This lineup/era was an absolute favorite of mine my Mom let me run 3 VCR's on 3 TV's to get NBC, ABC and FOX.

Regarding NBC's final two seasons (1990-91, 1991-92) as a Saturday Morning contender, the reason why they decided to pack it up wasn't just because of FOX; *it was mainly because of the Great Network Writer's Strike of 1988, where NBC lost so many bids to stronger cartoons to its rivals.*
1989-90 season was where things begin to really fall apart. They not only lost Gummi Bears to ABC, they even lost bids for new upcoming shows to Fox like Howie Mandel's Bobby's World and Tom & Jerry Kids (The final Hanna Barbera cartoon to be produced by Worldvision/TAFT).

Kinda ironic the network that saved Saturday morning in '81 ended their run a decade later. No matter, by this time Fox Kids would take over followed by KidWB and the next generation would dominate the 90s.

It will never be not weird to see Chip and Pepper hosting NBC Saturday Mornings. They are fashion designers. From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, of all places. To go from being perceived locally as the top cool summer wear brand over Grand Beach Club, to hosting American cartoons. I never quite appreciated that, until I was much older.

Canadian twins Chip and Pepper Foster hosted this live-action/animated variety show for NBC entitled Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness. At a peak in their popularity, the Foster brothers appeared on a Canadian TV station singing "Chip and Pepper: get hip or get out!" The footage came into the hands of NBC's head of entertainment, Brandon Tartikoff, who decided to give them a Saturday morning cartoon show. In fall 1991, Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness debuted. Not to be confused with Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Cartoon Madness was an affront to animation with its badly-animated surfer bulldogs caricatures of the Foster twins pasted against the kind of computer-rendered animation you'd expect from the early 1990s. It was like a bloody collision between a bad Flash cartoon and a computer science student's D- project, with no survivors. Then the two dogs enter reality, and somehow this transforms them into two aggressively Totally Radical Surfer Dudes With Attitude. The live-action segments take place in "The Chillin' Shack", a set basically ripped off from Pee-Wee's Playhouse except with a crowd full of cheering kids in sunglasses who clearly don't want to be there, a butler(?) with a crappy Russian(?) accent, and hands sticking out of the walls which they high-five with whenever they pass them, but pay no attention to for the rest of the show. And then there's the editing, which makes it look almost like something from Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!... except for real. A cornerstone to NBC's animated line-up, It melange of comedy sketches, celebrity interviews, and repeats of classic theatrical/TV cartoon shorts like Popeye the Sailor Man, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Heckle & Jeckle, and Captain Caveman from The Flintstones Comedy Show, which also aired on NBC back in the early 1980's. The animated Swamp Thing also aired the show in 2 parts. In each episodes, bulldog caricatures of the Foster twins appeared from time to time (appearing in featured cartoons in some episodes) Also along for the ride was sidekick Buzz Belmondo, fresh off his role as "Buzz" on the syndicated sitcom Out of This World. Of course, this is probably to be expected when you make a show starring a pair of jeans designers. Before broadcasting the show, the Foster twins did host for other Saturday morning cartoons, such as Space Cats, Captain N and the New Super Mario World, and Wish Kid. The show lasted only 1 season. It was one of the last animated cartoon-based seen on NBC Saturday Mornings before NBC decided to cut all cartoons from its Saturday morning schedule, resting instead on the live-action likes of Saved By the Bell and California Dreams. Similar to Weinerville that had not been in reruns after its removal from Nickelodeon in 1997, Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness remained unseen in syndication after the removal of the NBC Saturday Morning block in summer 1992, due to legalities with the licensed cartoons featured. There are no home releases of this program on any form. It is assumed that this variety show might be wiped from existence.
I wish all the other episodes of Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness could have resurfaced on TH-cam one day in the future.

I'm actually planning on doing a vlog/podcast about old Saturday Morning Cartoons and guys like you, rinse repeat and others have given me SOOOOO many great ones to research and talk about! I'll be talking about individual ones, ones from a certain cartoon block or year, or ones that have things in common (like similar premises.) Not too sure when I'll get it up and running, but hopefully soon and I'll definitely give you guys kudos 😉.

By 1991, NBC was no match for its competitors. CBS had Muppet Babies (1984), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987), and Garfield and Friends. Fox Kids had Bobby's World, Taz-Mania, and several others, and Nickelodeon had its then-new Nicktoons; Doug, Rugrats (1991), and The Ren and Stimpy Show. NBC had a lot of lesser cartoons like ProStars Space Cats, Wish Kids, and Yo Yogi!. As the final nail in the coffin, one post-opening sequence line from Garfield following NBC closing its Saturday Morning cartoon block was "Don't bother checking NBC, kids. They're not running cartoons anymore."

What's interesting is, Sat AM was NBC's weak spot (every juggernaut has one). On weekdays, they were kicking ass with prime time, and syndicated shows. CBS was in its "dork age," but kicked ass with their Sat AM lineup. This was still a bad move. Come 1996, with Telecom...everyone gets affected (and it showed in all lineups thru the next decade). Those are parts of the 90s that we don't want to remember, but have to somehow learn about.

And what exactly were the cartoons shown on Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness? Well mostly older stuff like Casper the Friendly Ghost, Heckle and Jeckle, Popeye the Sailor Man theatrical shorts and Hanna-Barbera content like Captain Caveman segments from 1980's The Flintstones Comedy Show, as well as DiC's own Swamp Thing also aired on the show in 2 parts. I honestly had completely forgotten this same block ran Pro Stars and Wish Kid; I just associate them with the original NBC airings and endless reruns on Family Channel.

I’ve read that around that time NBC was trying to get rid of their Saturday Morning line up for a while now. What baffles me though is, if that’s the case, why did they commission new shows if they had no intention of giving them a second season in the first place? Also, kind of a shame that Space Cats was never broadcast in reruns.
