A look at a few vintage framed ruck sacks, and why I still use them today..Real camping enthusiasts will love theses...
Corrections on weights. British army bergen weight is 3.5kg without rocket pockets, and 4.5kg kilos with the rocket pouches. Northern Ireland patrol sack 1.9kg. Bergen W/O pouches 90 litres W pouches 110kg. Patrols sack 30 litres. Apologies for the brain freeze...lol

These packs lack a lot of the modern tweaks that rucksacks have now, but those can be added if you put a bit of time and effort in. The big advantage is the frame. Pack frames have existed for literally thousands of years and there's a reason why they have remained in use, they act as esstentially an exoskeleton, taking the weight off one part of your own skeleton and allowing you to support it with a different and stronger part of your body. There's plenty of ways they can be customised and improved and getting it right for your body is really important. But as demonstrated in the video that is pretty easy to do even with simple equipment.

I've been using the Alice 1 for probably 50 years, all the kids used the same then when they became independent they bought the newer styles of packs over the years . And now guess what there all back to the Alice 1 and there kids are wearing there parents old Alice 2 . What I did do the all that Alice packs is converted the tray I dropped it 5 inches . And there all keepers, not a light frame but bullet proof. When I was kid no every gave a second thought to weight you just carried what you needed and we all survived and we never went anywhere you could resupply every few days we took what we needed for a week or 2 what ever it was . But great video Bex as always this one just hit home with me . Happy Trails

Hello there. I too used the vintage Alice (large) and still love it. Infact its coming out with me next week. The Alice doubles as my bugout bag, I love the wide neck opening, over the Britsh Bergen wich has a narrow colum opening. Both have their own weight issues for a trekking pack, but as you say bomb proof.
My alice has been proffesionally refurbed by a guy in the US, (well worth the extra expence).
I think you will see me using the framed packs a lot more for overnight treks in the future. However next week I film with the Alice, and I think you will see that episode in a couple of months time or so. Untill then You have your self very happy trails...Bex

In your refurb did you get the tray installed a very handy add on even if not lowered 5 inches allows you to bring gallons of water back to camp for filtering, when out for a week really a great hauler that tray or shelf what ever there calling it this year . Also a great wood packer for fire s wood one trip and your set for days . Happy Trails

No mate, mine didnt have the shelf, but was looking at the commander frame, in hope it will marry with the alice. The tray/shelf looks the business, but the commander frame is about £110.00 UK sterling. The shelf/tray is only about 9 bucks. Will look into either one of these as a nice add on.

Excellent video for me to stumble across, I'm fed up with my camping rucksack flopping all over the place when you're trying to get things out, I'm definitely after a framed rucksack after watching this. I can't believe they don't really make them anymore. This was full of information, nice one good sir 👍

Good video Bex. I was producing a video on a vintage stove I found and was looking to insert images regarding the 1970's and I came across your video. I haven't screen printed any images but did enjoy the video. An in depth look. Appreciated. All the best. Mark

Totally agree...them old frame packs carry the load with more comfort than internal frames and they tend to keep the back cooler!....not the best for bushwacking and alpine climbing but otherwise, definitely carry loads better...atb...woods

    Hi ya Mr Bex sir.....
Having a cup of tea watching your vid...life is good.
Santa brought me a alice pack large for Christmas....and it is just awesome..i love it...being my first frame pack it seems to be good on the old back..
I have been sorting out all my bug out stuff recently and doing my research on equipment and skills needed for permanent life outside if the SHTF .....and learning how and what to use to replace everyday essentials.......The more you can use in nature the lighter the backpack will be...........well thats what i am thinking lol....
The best way to try things out is to go out and test things...and try things and see whats works or does'nt...best to test things in peace time..(well peaceish...lol)...I love army surplus stuff myself..
    Anyway love your vids mate....
Take care of yourself and the family
    Dan

Thanx for the view Dan. Youll see my alice pack out in a couple of monthe time, makes for a great bug out bag. i am going down the road of making mine an armageddon pack. Less camping kit more using nature, the preps should be for short term untill base camp is built.
(think being homeless for a few nights, and pack for that) example warmest shelter possible over weight. Food and water purification. My new Armageddon pack is minimal compared to my bug out pack.
Watch the super shelter video on this channel, just type it into the channel search box, youll see no need for tent or sleeping bag, this is only visable in a wooded surroundings. An urban survival kit requires a different approach, such as a sleeping bag bivvy and blankets, and clothing, mostly. Also check out kit priority on this channel, if you havnt all ready seen it, feature all the things just spoken about, right up your street....All the best Bex

    Very informative video. 👍
Also here in The Netherlands you can find them in thrift stores for as low as 5,- Euro. This type of framed pack might be a good option for me to carry a bulky Dutch army M90 sleeping bag or a bulky Dutch army one man tent into the woods. Usually they are too big to fit inside a backpack.

External frame packs are exceptional ways to carry heavy or bulky kit. I also have a 100 litre external frame that I removed the pack, and replaced it with 100 litre army infantry bergen. and tailored it make a long range framed survival pack. Check out my playlist on tailoring bergens, if you like.....bex

I've been doing at least 6mile every morning with about 30 kg,,, I call my bergan Haley after my X coz it's breaking my back! woca woca woca!
I've a Lk 35 I used for a day two but I need a more padded waist belt to carry that amount of weight in it, framed packs still have their place, all the best my mate

That orange ebay find, early eighties i carried one of them for a month in the arctic circle. Most uncomfortable bastard thing i've ever used. Only thing that frame was good for was as a brake while sliding on my arse down a 45 degree slope in a foot of snow.
    Happy days!

Gota admit I dont overload the old Kelty external frame, just about 7-10Kg, for a weekend hike. 10kees in a parol pack and 10kees in a kelty is a world of difference. (would love to have seen it used like a sledge though, lol)

The guys here love modded ALICE packs. I got given a USGI molle 2 large rucksack with the polycarbonate frame. Once I got it adjusted, its weight just disappeared. Can position it high or low to load and preference. Downside is they like to keep the top low for situational awareness and snagging. Agree with water in the webbing!

    • @bexbugoutsurvivor
      @bexbugoutsurvivor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree there. I love the surplus packs, and have lost count of how many i have bought over the years. Packs such as the large Alice not really suitable just for a weekend camp and hike. My vintage alice 4.5 Kg (pack and frame only), my external frame pack featured just 7Kg fully loaded for a 2 day hammock camp. Camelbaks for me go on top of the pack, and not on the back, keeping the weight high, bottles of water, like we agree on a webbing. all the best... Bex

Dear Bexbugoutsurvior...Sir, it's great to see you. How you doing? Remember the big Green Veitnam back pack isnt that similar? I bought one after one of you're ace reviews. I'm using it regularly to pick up 6 packs of one plus half litre water along with shopping it's comfy I love pulling the straps tight then walking home up hills what not good fitness. Your keeping well, Great show. Looking forward to a camp of yours to watch asp. Good luck on the Car Boot for shoulder straps. Ihope your not thinking of going homeless camping on a traffic Island again. Send my Love to your dear Missus. Good Luck Tuff Guy.Your amazing. From Craig Lee White.

    • @bexbugoutsurvivor
      @bexbugoutsurvivor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Cheers fella. The Veitnam pack was the large a.l.i.c.e.(All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment), 4.5 Kilos, the vintage frame pack featured are the Kelty packs coming in at only a couple of hundered grams or so. My alice pack is a great all rounder for the tougher jobs, and buggin' out. For a weekend camp, the superlight Kelty is alot more suitable if you have a super light camping kit.
If I do find my self with no roof over my head, the large alice on a traffic island will fit the bill, but I have my bug out campvan, with all mod cons. My Alice pack and bug out shelter is coming out with me tomorrow night, and will be aired to view in a few months. In the mean time there are more overnight camps, ideas and reviews, and chat and treks...All the bext Bex

Thanks for this video. I had never heard of a external frame rucksack. What a great idea. I never seem to be able to find a good internal frame rucksack. Either poorly made or too small. I want something for field work that has easy access for collecting rocks, minerals, and fossils. I have an external Kelty Trekker 65 for my bugout bag, a 65L bag.

I have quite a collection of external frames from car-boot sales, from 40 litres to 100 litres. I too have an interest in minerals (Gold panning) I use the large Alice pack (USA) pattern, wide mouth to carry buckets, and plenty of external pockets for tools, and has a sturdy frame. There is a review of it coming up soon on this channel. until then take a look at the link below and see if this may help....#

i keep thinking of getting a frame and designing my own pack for it,
currently i'm using a sas bergen with external frame,
(i have two vintage 'bergens of norway' rucksacks on ebay, i sold one already for £65
so you might have found a good niche if you can pick up rucks on the cheap)

    • @bexbugoutsurvivor

For sure. Im grabbing vintage by the wagon load, and this is my pension fund Lol.
The SAS bergen is very similar to the US Alice pack, bomb proof, but on the heavier side for the weekend camper. Aiming for the load under 5Kg inc pack...its gonna be a challenge...Good luck mate...Bex
