    I am using 12' tidewater rod W10lb.mono W/50lb.braid leader, using a 1 3/4 oz. golf ball as a weight. I made 358' today, not casting hard, I have know more space to cast. Some day I hope to put a 4oz. lead on it. but until I can. Thank You for what you have shone me.

    Been using all nigh the same style for 35yr as a lot of sites I fish in the Uk don’t suite off the ground or a pendulum hit yet while still needing distance to clear inshore rough ground to 160yrd to find clean boundary feeding zones

    Great video. I have started using this cast for most of my fishing and getting on ok with it using it with the reel in the high positions. I am thinking of switching t the reel in the low position. Just wondering do you prefer reel low or high and what are there any advatages of using one over the other? More distance with the reel in the low position but I am aware that leavarge will be reduced while fighting big fish with the reel in the low position.

    Hi Tommy here in the UK I have never tried to cast that much weight and don't fancy subjecting my Zziplex to that kind of load it's only a 2500! I am curious do you start the power stroke with the lead under the rod or wait until the lead is on the outswing regards Alan

    Regarding the rod, what is the optimal measurement from butt to reel seat? I’m 6’3 and have my reel seat at 31” from the bottom of the rod, but that still seems too short for me to get maximum torque. Thanks

    • @TommyCCP
      @TommyCCP  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tony, the reel seat ( I measure from center of seat) measurement (handle) really depends on a couple of things. #1 - How much weight the rod is rated for and how much weight you actually plan to throw. #2 - Your body size and arm length. Heavier sinkers required more leverage, lighter payloads require more speed. A wider grip gives you leverage, shorter grip - speed.. On my factory rods, the lighter 10' 1-4 oz rod has a butt to center of seat measurement of 24" or so. As the rod weight rating increases the handle length increases. My heaviest rod, the 13' 8-12 has a handle length of 32.5". This is "generic" based on an average size guy. The best way to get YOUR measurement is to stand with your right arm extended straight out to your side. Hold the rod butt on your sternum and grab the rod (arm still fully extended out to the side). For most people, this distance is 30-32". At 6'3", if you have long arms that number could easily be 33, 34 or even a little longer.

      Got some clowns telling me the same thing. We have all these great resources at our fingertips these days. It doesn’t take a genius to learn how to do something the best way like it did 20 years ago And they can’t wrap their minds around that.

    Great video. I've got a really basic 2pc 10' surf rod with a #80 spinning reel. Using a 50# mono shock leader and 25# test mono main line. I've been using 1.5 oz. sinkers for practice, but have only managed about 50-60 yard casts.
    Granted, I've only logged about 2 hours of practice time so far, but does any of the info. above strike you as holding me back? The rod says it's rated for "2.5 ounces", for example. Can I actually put a bigger sinker on?

    • @obxfishing1800
      @obxfishing1800 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm new to this and just got done hanging out with Tommy in VA. What I believe, is that each rod has a sweet spot for being able to load up or bend. With 1.5 oz on a rod rated for 2.5 oz, I'm going to guess, and may be wrong, but I think you are not going to be able to load the road and get that bend in it to help facilitate the furthest cast possible. Maybe have a film of you from the side (left side if you are a righty) and use the 1.5 oz. Use a simple Hatteras cast with no swing back and see how your rod bends in the video. I believe if you keep your arms extended and perform the cast properly, as Tommy shows, you will likely see that the rod does not load up like it can. I would consider performing the same process with a 2 oz, film it and 2.5 oz too. I've heard some rod companies do not rate their rods right, so make sure, from someone who knows, that your rod can actually take 2.5 oz first, or you may blow up the rod. My comments should only be used as a reference. I am new at this, but trying to become a well versed student. Hope this helps and be safe!

      Not advisable! If you go over the recommended max weight you risk breaking your rod. If you want to go heavier get a better rod

      I personally recommend Tommy's rod. Try to get a 12' rod rated 4 to 8 oz and try to instead of 25 test mono bring it down to 20 pound test mono. And also depend on the reel you are using you will get tremendous amount yards. You could punch Tommy's rod as hard as you want and it wont break. I cast 6oz with a chunk of bunker for striper down in NJ. with Tommy's 13' cast pro rod with my penn fathom 15 with 20bl line and a 50lb shock leader and 6 oz sinker always and guys that see me casting all they say is, wao you could cast a mile with that thing. LOL.

      I use a 12foot Penn Prevail, 17lb.mono with 25 ft.of 50lb.mono shock leader- 8oz.weight- that's the normal line&leader in the OBX surf&off piers.

    Hardest part for me is holding my thumb on the spool when elbow to elbow and wet at the point

      Put a piece of surgical tube on bottom reel foot that can fold up to spool. Slice it open at top so thumb opens it up to cover spool. When you release the tubing will flop out of the way for thumbing

    What size line for 4oz sinkers?

    • @johnnybravo5962
      @johnnybravo5962 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rule is 10 pounds of test per OZ, if you are using 4oz sinkers MAX, you should have either 40 pound line or use a 40 pound shock leader

      Terry was a great man and a friend. I had the honor of spending a day with him at the Zziplex factory back in 2009. The casting community misses him dearly. Not sure exactly what that has to do with a tutorial on the hatteras cat though...

    I went down to 20lb. line W/65lb. leader using 1 3/4 oz. golf ball for my weight. I can't seem to break the 400ft.with my cast. What size line should I use with a 100gram weight.

    • @TommyCCP
      @TommyCCP  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1.75 oz is very light for 20 lb test running line. Competition rules dictate a minimum of .25mm diameter for 100g which=h is about 3.75 oz. most .25 mm lines are around 8 lb test. While I do not surf fish with 8 lb test line, YOU could certainly drop down to 15 or even 12 lb test line and pick up distance. Also, I would recommend casting a sinker, not a golf ball as it is too light. Just be careful, make sure the casting area is safe.

    I have just seen this clip...thanks to COVID by browsing time has increased.......By this time I hope you have come out of your cave.....take a look at surf angling and casting in South Africa, by light years the finest shore anglers and casters on the planet......nobody even close. These methods are from the dark ages with tackle from the Jurassic period.

      Andre, The Hatteras cast is typically used in the USA for fishing on crowded beaches and is safe to execute in a crowd. While it does not provide the distance that some other styles produce, it is a very popular cast here. Do not confuse it with other more popular styles like the Full tournament style groundcast or pendulum. Each cast has its place. I have personally competed against the worlds best casters and have had very good success internationally. The South African casters have a unique style and are good casters but don't typically finish at the top in international competition. I'm out of my cave...lol

      @shainemoodley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have watched the tutorial on the South African cast (John Holden) and it appears to be the same as the Hatteras cast. Sadly it has been a while since the South Africans featured in the international casting scene but we do hope that will change.
