Solving a Flooding Crawlspace

- We solve heavy crawlspace flooding with new concrete set properly. The previous concrete contractor tried to create a swale, but the foundation was still exposed with bare soil. Overflowing gutters and heavy rainfall quickly flooded the crawlspace.

The rain footage is what sets you apart from the rest 💪
Thank you! It's awesome but exhausting to get it sometimes.
@TheFatman2436 Agreed, Having the work done by any others & showing it just goes so far, Showing it in actual 'action proves it as well as the quality of the work
@@GCFD I bet, but we know you are a rockstar Shawn.
@@westbccoast haha thank you!
Agree, it’s what makes you get those thumbs up 👍🏼
"I'm a professional, i dont need hearing" in 20 years he will be saying to his grandson "what you say mijo, gotta talk louder, grandpa cant hear good" LOL... Took a few generations of workers to go from no resperatators and protections, even things like Fall protections on sky scrapers and stuff, and goggles and other PPE saying no man works with that stuff, to now, almost everyone does it... Born in 84 here and i'm on that cusp of Screw that junk and you need to protect yourself... lol... worked in manufacturing lines when i was younger and required saftey glasses and hearing and other thingsevery day and hated it.... but OSHA forced.. ugh...
now the older I get and use PPE and see things like if i'm grinding, all the crud and stuff inside the filters that I would have breathed into my lungs... holy crap thats eye opening... really makes you think... and you see the generations of Black Lung from coal mining and just breathing stuff all day and deaf from no plugs, and things like that...
I agree Mike. 1981 Here and I've always tried to protect myself. Even vacuuming can affect your hearing. Since I started wearing hearing protection years ago my hearing has improved. No job is worth your safety.
Nice job diverting the water away from the house. That yard is not a yard, it's a swamp!
It's definitely at the bottom!
Is anyone else watching this thinking…Miguel is hilarious!
This channel is better than what’s on TV 📺
One of my all-time favorite channels on TH-cam.
Thank you!!
Miguel is a funny guy. I'm willing to bet he's the life of the party. Good job with the pour!
Yes he's quite the character!
Nice guy…..deaf as a post if he carries on with that no ppe attitude tho!
Was sat here watching TH-cam and thought hmmm let’s see if there’s anything new here and sure enough there was!. Great job!
Thank you!
I started watching your channel back in 2020. I have learned so many things by watching your videos. Over the summer I finally able to put what I learned into practice. I switched all the cheap plastic downspout extenders over to PVC. Since I live on a hill and the longest run was under a deck I did not have to dig at all.
The difference is crazy. I never use to see any rain out of the extenders unless it was a super heavy rain. Now we get a light shower and the water is pouring out. Thank you for you great educational videos!
Thanks for sharing your pipe upgrades! I’m glad you found my stuff valuable! - Shawn
Great video Shaun
The rainy footage at the end is your trademark and proves how well your installations really do work very well.
I agree it's just very difficult to get that rain footage. I love it though
It's a good day when there's a new Gate City video.
Thank you!
Happy Friday! Thanks for dropping the new vid. It's super satisfying to see long-term issues get resolved.
Thank you Joe!
That Buggy is a game changer a back saver
30:40 I'd have used that green lidded utility box to cover the PVC cleanout you covered at 30:51 so it's easily fond and accessed if needed...
Yay! Been looking forward to another video...great way to finish off a friday evening! Thanks Sean and the Crew!😀
Thank you!!
My late night viewing selection(s) while eating dinner after work
Shawn, please keep up the great work! It was great to see the ole concrete boys...
Thank you! They're still around
You guys are good. Entertaining too and nice result on the rainy day.
Knowledge is having the right answers. Intelligence is asking the right questions. This is one of the best things that I enjoy about your channel. I am learning something. Thank you for contributing to my education,, Ken
Thank you for watching Ken. I'm really happy that you enjoy my content and I work very hard to make every second of video entertaining or educational. I work hard to cut out the fluff.
Solved the problem completely in front and sides great! I still cringe when I see Miguel doing Crete work.
He is my go-to guy
No wire? No rebar in the new driveway concrete? Who’s the concrete operator ?! 😢 Love your content
Not required there due to the soil composition
Like John said above. When I lived in Colorado you can't add enough rebar, but they just don't use it here because of our climate (no real frost line), subsoils (no bentonite), and other local conditions (no subsurface water). It's Weird to not see rebar when you're used to it I know.
Another job well done, wish they could have had the piping run all the way to the back of the yard underground though!
I feel the same way Lee. If they had a better spot to send the water I likely would have done it.
The two steps leading to the front door are now way different heights, increasing the chance someone will trip.
Did you consider ripping out the step to make it a single step up or at least ramping the concrete up to that lower step (so that it was just a single step up)?
Personally I would have ripped out the whole ramp and landing and re-poured a larger landing, but understand the homeowner probably didn’t want to spend that money.
That's a great point! Lots of considerations and compromises go into these drastic solutions. The flooding was so bad that they wanted to prioritize getting it solved.
Great job Shawn. Definitely looked challenging, what a good team you have. Also great to see you a contractor who gets to end of job consistently, so many shady contractors, great to see honest ones who do what they say they going to do
Thank you! I don't think we've ever not finished a job. I would never think to do that.
I think the homeowners will ask you back after a few years to solve the issues in the back yard.
It's possible as they have a lot of water from the neighborhood as well flowing through there.
@@GCFD I guess some properties just have a lot of water and not a lot you can do about it. Obviously cost is a big consideration for them, I am sure they would love to have it done, but comes down to whether they can afford it. The main goal is keeping the water away from the house, the yard is secondary.
I like the way you pack soil around the house. Because that sink's a lot.
Thank you! It really is such a simple but effective thing you can do to keep water away.
That was a really good solution.
Thank you Gerald!
Looks Good : )
Thank you!
I’m liking the concrete look-simple and practical! Nice drone shots as usual!
Thank you! The homeowners really like the concrete too!
Yes, I think the concrete looks great. Although I get the "sea of concrete" issue some have, a couple planters of flowers and some patio chairs can improve that a bunch.
Good job.
Great work!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for commenting Alexei!
Another great project!
Thank you Randall!
You have excellent video .
Another success thank you Shaun.
Thank you!
In the end the prof is in the quality work a job well done.
Thank you!
Success!
Thank you Julie!
That beautiful rain footage!
Haha I know!
Pull pins before u leave especially if there buried in concrete. Saves the pin holes n save whoever gotta beat it out n most likely bend it. I pull nails n pins always every pour
I've done that before and I wish we had pulled these. We had a ton of concrete that we pulled over the forms while dialing in our fall.
Great problem solving. Tremendous peace of mind for the homeowner. ❤
Thank you!
Thanks Shawn. Good upload
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you Rusty!
Another job well done.
Thank you!
From a UK viewer and a Liverpool FC supporter loved to see the LFC flag outside, good job
👍👍
on the owner now to create the swale to remove the mess in the backyard !
Yeah it turned out really nice. Water is running away from the foundation like you said. Another fine job. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
Thank you! This was a tricky one and we spent a lot of time off camera dialing in the fall.
Thank you, Shawn. Nicely done.
Thank you!
See, supervising the concrete job is how it's done right the first time. Keep up the good work. Good luck in the contest.
👍👍
Keep up the great vids. Music fits them perfectly
Thank you! I always wonder about the music....I don't want it too overwhelming or distracting. It's very difficult to find music even though I pay for using it.
Good work. I appreciate your after footage during/just after rain!
Thank you Mark!
Looks good great video..
Thank you Brent!
Another job solved successfully. Everybody happy. Cheers.
Thank you Laurie 👍👍
I love the long videos.
Thank you! I have a lot of videos in the works too.
Harvey on scene, what a treat. I would like to see a short video with you explaining the display items behind you during this outtake. 👍👊
What do you mean display items John?
@@GCFD your collection of item items on the back wall. I was interested in what some items were and the story behind the items if there is one.
Tell those folks to plant some bushes and other thirsty plants all over there to help let the ground become a bit more of a sponge to absorb that water. good stuff as usual
Great idea!
Great work. Looks better and now the water from the front is flowing away nicely. 👍
Thank you!
Good job results are what count!!!
Thank you Tony!
Bucket right into the truck I loled hahaha
Superb job done Shaun, and excellent video and its all working really well 👌👌👍👍
Thank you Taylor! 👌
Thanks for posting, Shawn. Been a while.
You're welcome! I'm trying to get caught up on my videos
Great job with the concrete and grading. Great idea to disperse the run-off since we know just how erosive running water can be. I like your approach to this job. The new gutters should help as well.
Thank you Steve!
I really enjoy your videos!! I'm in Indiana and I'm having some similar work done to my property. I hope it turns out well. Thank you for your videos. Larry
Best of luck with your projects Larry!
As a brit i did not expect to see a liverpool supporter sign there 😁,great job 👍🇬🇧

The Storm on the Sea of Concrete - Rembrandt
Good to see Harvey, didn’t recognise him without his cane
You have to save the house first!👏👏👏
For sure! All other considerations come second.
Great to see some concrete vids again Shaun! Why no Beak this time?
We just brought the mini skid and didn't really need the beak.
I noticed one thing while you were flying the drone around at the end. The houses on that side are set below the street grade causing the ground water to run towards the house.
I am glad you solved the problem and you always do quality work. I just wish it was more aesthetically pleasing, like keep dirt and plants in front of the house, regrade this dirt, install a long channel drain 10 feet out in front of the house to catch water from the driveway and directed to a sump pump to pump the water to the street, rather than having a huge slab of concrete directly in front of the house. Just my two cents. Maybe my idea would not work.o
Those are extremely valid points to discuss. In this situation where the driveway is sloping down into the house I need a 100% solution that is fail proof. Concrete does deliver that, where a drain can clog, pumps can clog and fail, or the power can go out. Even considering all the looks and possible solutions, I go with the fool proof one. They can add potted plants or furniture to help improve the appearance if needed. Thanks Thomas for sharing your thoughts!
Did you consider a channel drain plus putting all the downspouts in pipe so you could just carry it all to a rear outfall? That backyard looks like a future project.
Yes I would have liked to do a better job but they were on a budget with this solution.
Harvey and his crew? thought you were done with them. Good job and video as always.
I still work with them fairly often.
Shawn. Great video and work as usual.
I can't help but feel a drain basin at the lip of the concrete to channel water from the driveway inside pipe to the lower area where the gutter water drains out would stop erosion and looks better. I understand it's more complex and it's another thing to keep clean.
Another flood solution. Its sad that homes were not built to deal with water ingress from the design phase.
👍 For sure
Your concrete guy is good, he gets the end goal 👍🏻
I've been working with him for years.
Concrete solved our wetness/water same problem
👌👌
Eek! What happened to your bird-beak-concrete-eater-thingy??? (I loved that little guy!)
I still have it but it's for a full sized skidsteer. This was too small of a job to need it.
But... But... It's so CUTE! **giggles** @@GCFD
No rebar pins to tie the new concrete to the existing slab? Really? The mix was soupy. No remesh?
Mesh is not used in our climate with our subsoils. We do use fiber.
They should look into a dry pond.
Great idea!
Another nice one, Working w whats there is the key, those angles are tough, Great to see Miguel again its been a while + 2 on the Pizza Qty. I do feel bad for the homeowner though w having the back yard in an almost swamp back there, would take a lot more to fix the grading on all of that
They were thrilled we solved the crawlspace issues and they really like the additional concrete in front. It turned out very well.
No doubt will save the home instead of just replacing a door for no reason
Maybe try suggesting to put stamp concrete if any of your masons have the ability nothing wrong with concrete🇺🇸👍
Great transformation! Didn't want to take that front down spout under the concrete to a popout on the side? Any negatives to doing that?
I didn't want to discharge that much water since the homeowners were very concerned about that. I really went back and forth on that point though. I think I could have done it either way.
Like your videos. But a question? When you put those half round galvanized shields in front of the foundation windows and then trap them in dirt or concrete where does the rainwater that falls inside them go, if not against the window and then seep inside the house somewhere? Love the rain footage. Thanks
When a "sea of concrete" is too much, why not add planter boxes?
That's a great idea! There are lots of ways to mitigate the looks.
Leaving the gutter dumping on the concrete when you're RIGHT there? I'll never understand or agree with that logic. But as always, love your videos.
I cannot believe they do not have a channel in the back and drain away, like a french drain or something similar
Dry well at the end of it , out by them tree's. On the other side by the air-conditioning.
Another dry well. 👍🤷
Are they looking to fix the rest of the driveway? What about the beak! Love the concrete buggy!
They will do the remaining driveway when the budget allows. Since we used the mini bobcat we didn't bring the beak. They do make a beak for the mini though and I would love to have one!
Nice work guys - (all the way over there and they support Liverpool !!)
Ha! I was wondering if anyone would notice!
Looks like there is a large natural area behind the shed, why not run the drain pipes and discharge there?
We could have but the homeowners were on a budget for getting this solved.
I was wondering if you had been slow. I hadn’t seen many drainage videos
Not too slow. I've just been super busy lately!
I wonder if a curb would have blocked and redirected the water coming down the driveway. Possibly, the plantings could have been saved that way. Thanks.
It would have worked for sure. The problem was the rain landing in the natural area and the gutters overflowing (maybe due to maintenance). We chose to solve the issue 100% and the homeowners are very happy with the additional concrete.
The downspout -> pvc connection was awesome!! Is that better/recommended vs black drainage pipe?
I feel like tree roots grow easily through traditional drain pipe
He doesn't use corrugated pipe, it clogs too easily and retains water, so it can be a mosquito breeding zone. PVC flows better and there is nothing to hold any water.
PVC is way better all around like Brenda said above
I like the drainage-motivation in the cement crew.
Drone-FYI: mine fell out of the sky at battery-cycle 190, those polymer batteries are only rated for 200 cycles. If yours loses signal & performs a RTH on an over 150-cycle battery then trash that battery.
I'm kinda wondering why there isn't a drainage-attorney on YT who can analyze law violations of developed-watersheds. Especially given the 4.5 flash-flood threats in my territory.
Great point! Thanks Bob!
I thought you were moving away from Miguel and his crew. They’re back now?
I still use them quite a bit.
Curious to know why you used the shuttle instead of just having the mixer pull into the driveway and pour directly? Was the main driveway concrete too weak to support a heavy truck?
Looks so much better... that house, the years of errosion and people moving dirt around not understanding it will accelerate the errosion of the house, all the yards around was sloping to the house! wow... yeah, after this work you and your guys did, no more issues i'd bet! that swell and valley of driveway turned out good to slope water away and follow the drieway.... Though, why not pipe uthe middle downspout before pourin the slab and then do a sanatary T to pick up the next corner and then kick that down? Just left to have the new driveway carry it away?
Personally i hate when sidewalks and stuff around my house shows errosion from water coming off the roof and stuff, where my old house built in 84, you can see the walkways, where teh water came off the roof, hit the sidwalks at the 1/2 mark and so from half over, it was rough, and the other side was smoother and not etched... lol. seeing the power of water! no gutters... we live in Phoenix where it rains like 10 days a year, haha.... so gutters for a 15 minute storm, not really a top priority here. But my new house i had built in 2019, we have paver driveway and paver walkways... the pavers going from my front door to my driveway, the roof has already etched the pavers pretty bad... but have a 3800sqft roof and the shape of the front, basically about 1/3 of the roof water all works it was above the front door, so when its a good monsoon massive storm with flash flooding, the ammount of water comming down ifront of my front door is absolutely insane... so its etching the softer pavers faster. So I do need to invest in some gutters... I want to find a company that will do seamless gutters where they roll and make them out of a single sheet onsite, but not a lot of gutter companys out here, lol.
Our gutter guys do the seamless. I have a video coming up where I showcase the gutter work quite a bit.
Is the edge of the new concrete already broken
No that was all the excess concrete we pulled out while dialing in our fall.
what's Miguel on? he's said more in this video than I've heard him say in all the previous videos he's been in 😂
I think it just got into this video! He never stops talking! haha
Liverpool Football Club, yea so far from home, love it.
I saw that as well lol nice I am Canadian but I knew it seem a little out of place.
I think the end of the swale, could have ended in a drain box (catch basin ?), and then piped to a lower part of the back yard ?
