13:19 fun fact, rats have no gag reflex. That means linguini’s soup was so bad it broke the laws of nature.
So, rats dont have uvillas? Interesting...
@@Jason-..- They don't have uvulas nor tonsils, and no gag Reflex, wich is actually a problem because they can't throw Up if they eat something harmful.
This movie has the most evocative visual messaging I've ever seen. The moment the critic is taken back to his childhood is seconds but you know everything about it instantly
That moment is what us french call " une madeleine de Proust " which is something who reminds us childhood memories.
For example, my father's is picking cherries on a farm during the summer because he grew up on the southeast of the France and there were cherry trees next to his family countryside house, and he liked climbing in these for picking cherries.
I love the imagery of him dropping his pen also. At that moment he’s a kid again not worried about critiquing a meal and he’s able to enjoy and feel to his fullest potential
@@mistahmata I heard somewhere that a dish is good when he reminds mom's cooking
Don't forget that there are really no "evil" characters and the "bad guy" doesn't die.
Congratulations on the new addition to the family! Great movie choice, one of my favourite animated movies.
It was great
Congratulations James!!! What a lucky little girl to get you as a grandfather 😊
That rat poison store actually exists in Paris - the Julien Aurouze and Co. It has the same storefront in real life as in the movie.
Indeed, they have stuffed rats in the store window.
Two very famous actors in here. Peter O'Toole voiced Ego. And Ian Holm gave his voice to Chef Skinner.
I'm a 3D artist and many years ago was talking with one of the artists from this movie on a forum and he shared the 3D files for the entire restaurant kitchen scene. My computer could barely even load it so I couldn't really do anything with it but it was still really cool.
When they call you grandpa its the best feeling in the world... Love my grand kids....
I dont like veggies but after watching this movie, I actually tried ratatouille and I loved it !
Oh man, I'm jelous
I had totally forgotten that Peter O'Toole was the voice of Ego, the food critic. He has one of the most distinctive voices from my childhood. Loved it!
The quickly-controlled spit take when Ego realises just what quality of wine he's about to waste always make me grin :D
I have the same thing with my grandmother's cooking. She and her two sisters were such wonderful cooks and bakers as well. Every so often I will eat something that takes me right back to her dinner table and the wonderful meals we all shared together. I wish I had learned more of her recipes before we lost her. I think this movie does such a beautiful job of illustrating a simple message, and does so with absolutely stunning animations. As someone who went to culinary school and worked in professional kitchens I really appreciated the attention to detail that they used when crafting the visuals for the cooking scenes. The dish that Remy makes at the end is actually called confit byaldi, which is a variation on traditional ratatouille. Thomas Keller, who served as the food consultant for the film, was asked how he would serve ratatouille for the most famous food critic in the world, and he decided on doing it in this byaldi style with a piperade (red pepper sauce) on the bottom and a vinaigrette spooned over the top. You can find recipes for the dish online, and it is indeed very delicious, but a lot of slicing if you don't own a mandoline.
Another great Pixar film from director Brad Bird is "The Incredibles." Holly Hunter (from O Brother, Where Art Thou?) is one of the voices.
One of my favorite Pixar movies to date, especially as an Aspiring Animator who loves when Paris is animated, they did a good job at making Paris look beautiful if nothing else
What a wonderful reaction! The movie doesn’t get enough attention as it is. This was a ton of fun. 😄
Also congrats on being a grandfather, and the snack testing was fun too lol!
I'm sure someone else already told you this, but ratatouille is like a peasant dish in France. It's chopped veggies in a tomato broth (I'm not a chef so I may be describing that wrong), and it's SO GOOD.
The crepe restaurant in the France Pavilion in Epcot has a ratatouille crepe that's delicious. 🤤
In fact, the real ratatouille is what we see in Ego's flashback. What he ate is " un tian de légumes ".
You'll probably find that funny but I'm french and I hate ratatouille 😅
Also, Ego's flashback is what us french call " une madeleine de Proust " which designs something who bring us childhood memories. It came of the french writer Marcel Proust who said in on of his books that madeleines' odor reminded him when he went on his aunt's house, as a child, and tmthe fact she always gave one after dipping it in her tea
@@a.g.demada5263 Oh yes I know that's what "real" ratatouille looks like. Remy just fancied it up. 😄
I love madeleines, too, because the sweetness is so light.
@@kriscynical normal, that's a gastronomic restaurant after all, so presentation has to be perfect.
Me too, I love madeleines.
Thanks for the info
The Ego portion of the film is an homage to the French author, Marcel Proust. He was an incredibly gifted writer in the beginning of the 20th century. One passage is about having a Madeleine (a kind of a warm coffee cake that it still very popular today). The adult character bite into the cake and in transported to his childhood. The set up of the kitchen is also very similar the the old “brigade” system in French kitchen 100 years ago. A great and researched film. In the Thai treat have durian fruit… watch out,
Congratulations on the new addition to your family. I think you'll be a fun grandpa.
One great animated film you might like which is not Disney is 'The Secret of NIMH,' which was Don Bluth's first feature after leaving Disney. It's not so much of a kiddie film, but the animation is incredible; Bluth was the animator who gave Disney animated films their magical lighting, and 'NIMH' makes great use of it.
My mother has a rat fear (not a phobia to the extent of panic, but it sends the shiver up her spine to the highest order if she sees any one close), and as lifelong residents of New York City (which is absolutely and deservedly infamous for its epic rats), well, she's not too keen on this movie, haha. But she is also a wonderful and beloved public school teacher since before I was born shy of 33-years ago, and has had to watch this movie with her young students more than often on slow days. God bless her.
Congratulations on being a Grandpa! I am so happy for you! Two great Disney Pixar animated films to react to are "Finding Nemo" and "Up".
The Emperor's New Groove is A Definite Must See...
Easily my favorite Pixar movie. Remy is such a lovable and relatable little character, and the Ego revelation scene always gets me, it's like a Grinch moment with such a different context.
Congratulations on becoming a grandfather, James!!!
Congratulations on becoming a grandfather!!!
Congratulations also on the sponsor. Very cool seeing the channel grow : )
Thank you so much 😀
CONGRATS ON BEING A GRANDPA!!🎉🎉
Congratulations on becoming a grandfather! Also, great movie choice. One of my favorite Pixar films.
Congratulations James! So happy for you and your family! Enjoy this movie, it’s a good one
Granddaughter movies from Disney you will eventually have to watch:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Cinderella
Sleeping Beauty
The Little Mermaid
Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast
All classic Disney staple movies a sweet little farm-girl from Iowa will absolutely love! Enjoy and congratulations on your brand new and first grandchild!
Congratulations to you Grandpa! And to your family 🎉
i'm the real life ratatouille; a few years ago i got off a train on fifth ave in downtown san diego and i saw a rat trying to jump onto a seating area... he jumprd a few times but could not reach so i set my backpack down where he was jumping; he ran passed my backpack and settled on my foot before doing a 360 as if waiting for an elevator; i lifted him to where he was jumping but he would not get off my foot so i shook him off and left him on the barkwoood where he was jumping to. i walked to my apt from there thinking about how even the rats in san diego are nice...
Aweee CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING A GRANDPA!!! 🎉😊 I pray many blessings and happiness for you and your family!!
Also just found your channel and I love you, you’re so kind and funny. You remind me of my dad, I miss him.

Thank you so much, LOTS of content to watch if you want more laughs
Congratulations!!❤ Being a grandparent is amazing!
Congratulations Grampa 🙌🏻☺️
And I absolutely love this movie. So happy my girls were still young when these great Disney movies came out.
And gas stoves have flames😂 even the broiler is flame
Great reaction Grampa 😂😂
Congratulations on the new addition to the family!
Thank you so much 😀
Here’s a fun theory I’ve heard. I don’t really believe it, but it’s a very sweet one.
The old lady in the beginning of the movie is Ego’s mother. Remi learned to cook by watching her and saw how she made ratatouille. Though he put his own spin on it, the essentials were the same when he cooked it. So Remi basically allowed Ego to eat his mother’s cooking again. And that kind of cooking is absolutely the best.
I'll take that, sure
"There aren't a lot of Disney movies you can hate."
There are nowadays. 😂
I think it will take me a while to catch up
I love The Emperor's New Groove. Congrats!
Congratulations on becoming a grandfather. Love your genuine reactions. Keep it up.
My daughter and I have a "secret code" based off an Old Donald Duck and Chip and Dale cartoon.. I have also since taught it to my other child.
The voice cast included actors from Arrested Development (Will Arnett, who also plays Lego Batman), The King of Queens (Patton Oswalt, who played Spence), Lawrence of Arabia (Peter O'Toole, who was the title character), Everybody Loves Raymond (Brad Garrett, who played Ray's brother Robert), and The Incredibles (Brad Bird, who voiced Edna, the superhero costume designer; he also directed The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles 2).
Ratatouille and Shrek II are two of the best animated movies I know of (outside of some wonderful movies from Japan) but the difference between the two is that Ratatouille I can watch any time and still laugh while Shrek I can no longer watch.
When this movie first came out a lot of the promotional materials for it actually had a little phonetic pronunciation underneath the title in parenthesis because French spelling is weird like that. 😂
As a french, it amusing me 🤭
@@a.g.demada5263 I guess that's not really unlike my best friend in Mexico who is fluent in reading and writing English, but she struggles to speak it because "it ties her tongue in knots". The funniest example I can remember was her saying "Like 'WORLD'. That's THREE CONSONANTS TOGETHER! How the hell do you SAY that??" 😂
@@kriscynical heyhey 🤭
Congrats Granda! 🎉
According to the filmmakers the movie was supposed to take place in 2004 or shortly thereafter. I suppose the B&W on there t.v.'s were programs running in syndication then?
Awww! You're a Grandad now!
In the spirit of the movie that you're watching, I must say "conga-rats!"
🐭🐁🐭🐁🐭🐁🐭🐁
🤣
On the whole "What was that I grabbed?" I have a story for you...
My sister went to a Catholic college, older building. One of her roommates was going to shower and didn't have her contacts in. She went to grab a bottle of shampoo for her hair, it turned out to be a live bat.
Oh wow, creepy for her
Congratulations on your new grandchild! You seem so sweet and you have such a great laugh that I know you'll be a wonderful grandfather 😊
Thank you so much!
OOOOO Flushed Away and Over the Hedge were other good ones from my daughter's era as well!!
ratatouillie is a French dish of stewed vegetables.
Anton Ego was played by Peter O’Toole, a giant of an actor. Remi was played by Patton Oswald, a hilarious comedian.
It's yummy.
@@captbunnykiller1.0 I’d like to make it!
Congratulations on being a Grandpa for the very first time!!
Thank you so much 😀
@@AwesomeUSMovies Your welcome
Actually, you're a cuddly teddy bear, like so many awesome grandpas are! Also one of the best reactors around. Belated congratulations on becoming a grandpa. As always, loved watching with you. Later, buddy 😎
I live in canada, with my understanding of little french. the word I just knock out half the letters and add a french nuance with the end, and it’s helped me 😅 ain’t always close but near enough to get corrected.
Me, I'm french so I'm proud to know things unknown to others.
For example, Ego's flashback is something that has a spécial name
This movie came out when my oldest was about 3. I absolutely love this movie....I have my favorite cartoons from that era but I also had alot of my old VHS tape cartoons from the 80's and 90's that I played for her as well. Like the Secret of Nim, Chip and Dale with Donald Duck, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Bonkers The OLD OLD Christmas cartoons of Jack Frost with the dancing skeletons. Aladdin, City Mouse and the Country mouse, Ferngully, the old old Popeye cartoons on Vhs... I could really go on lol....
Just found your channel today, I love movie reactions channels and you seem so wholesome and exactly the kind of person I would want to watch. Love long form videos too. Thank you for your hard work 💜🙏
Welcome to the channel
Yay! Babies are the best. Congratulations Grandpa! You seem like a great granddad to have. That’s a lucky baby.
Thanks
43:27 I've learned to make Ratatouille. It's an intense labor, but SO worth it! Even people who don't normally like veggies like it.
Congratulations on becoming a grandpa ❤
I'm jelly, I want to try it now.
Remember that Disney acquired Pixar, but they put out very different movies. Ratatouille is in my opinion a masterpiece of animation. They actually get me to suspend disbelief that Remy can control Linguini’s actions! Not something that I thought could be done. Also, the music, the personalities, the Anton as a child montage-an absolute masterpiece. Try other Pixar fare: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Up, Cars, Inside Out…all masterpieces in their own right.
Holy crap. Congratulations 🎉
Let me be the first to call you an Old man 😅
Congrats on your granddaughter! You look way too young to be a granddad. Your grandkids will be so lucky to enjoy these films with you in the future. I still remember when my Grandpa took me to see Indian in the Cupboard when I was maybe 5/6. It was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. He bought me a huge popcorn and some Whoppers. I started crying at one point and he let me watch the rest of the movie from the comfort of his lap. Core memory right there. I’m thrilled you get to create some of your own in the future!
Congratulations on the grandchild.
"How am I supposed to get Ratatouille from that?" By learning French. ;D
Apparrently, I'm just glad they kids told me what it's called instead of letting me destroy the name
James, your laugh makes me laugh. I love your reactions :)
So happy to hear it
Congratulations! Grandpa James! You're going to be the best, I can sense it! Enjoy your time in this new role!
Ohhh, James!! 🥳🎉CONGRATULATIONS on becoming a Grandfather!!🎉🎂! Best to you and your family during this Joyous time!!
Thank you so much!
Oh YES! I had no idea you've gotten around to animated films! This was the golden age of PIXAR. I don't know what the viewership is like on your community but the PIXAR catalog is excellent (barring maybe a few duds). I believe there are 27 films now and at least 20 of them are near masterpieces. I can recommend them all but my personal favorite is UP.
Yeah I've watched several animated movies at this point. Check out the playlist. Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train a Dragon
Congratulations on the addition to your family! To answer your question, yes, I've had ratatouille several times although we didn't call it that. It's pretty much tomato based vegetable soup with squash and zucchini in it. You could probably find a recipe online. The way it's made in the movie is a little thicker, and most likely baked, casserole style.
Congrats on your first grandchild 💛 I'm just finding your channel. You look like such a nice guy! I hope my dad would laugh and enjoy movies like this! It makes me so happy watching you laugh and actually get the humor and lessons of this movie! Is definitely one of my favorite movies.
I'm from Chile 🇨🇱 I hope you get a chilean candy box someday! Lots of love from here! ✨
Congratulations Grandpa!!! Super happy for your family. Praying for an amazing first year for your grandchild.
Thank you so much
Congrats on the first grandchild!
Congratulations!!!! 🐣👶🏻
My favorite is Hercules. Congrats Grandpa ❤❤❤❤
The number of obvious and subtle cultural references (including Disney and other companies films) in this movie is off the charts. As someone who is living in an old house in a small Burgundy village I can even confirm the presence of rodents in my attic but not in this huge proportion, tho.
Ce film est un chef d'oeuvre (pun intended) finement cuisiné à partir des meilleurs ingrédients.
Awesome reaction and congratulations on becoming a grandfather.
Thank you so much 😀
How exciting, congratulations Grandad!🎉
Love this movie so much
Also, congrats! Your grandson/granddaughter will have an amazing grandpa
Congratulations Opa 😂
Great movie. Makes me hungry every time.

Congrats on your grandchild! Great reaction as always. Not gonna lie, I might enjoy this movie more then my kids do 😂
Congrats James! And yes you’re lovable but it’s because you’re just a pure and nice guy. Keep doing you 👊
I tried some ratatouille at a friend’s wedding reception. It was a couple of years after the movie came out, so I was curious to try it. It was delicious. Also congratulations on the granddaughter.

Congratulations on the grand baby, now you have a kid around that you can just spoil rotten
Congratulations. This is one of my favorite Disney/Pixar films.
Congratulations on expanding the family 🎉

Gratz on becoming a grandfather.
I personally though grew up addicted to horror movies, espescially "B" horror movies such as Pumpkin Head and things. The People Under the Stairs, Tommyknockers wasn't B movie but the graphics were seriously lacking. BUT what I think started it all was we had the 1985 movie "House" on VHS and I recall first watching it at about 5 years old. I have real formative memories of that movie. I could care less about the sequel and 3rd and 4th one. My oldest daughter was the same way, scary movies never scared her.
Congratulations on becoming a Grandfather
One of my favorite movies along with Cars! Check out Cars if you haven't yet 😁
Congratulations Grandpa James! If you thought you loved being a dad being a grandpa is 10x better haha. Might as well brush up on your kid movies so when you watch your new granddaughter you can show her the best of the best. Always enjoy your reactions. Keep up the good work. much love from Ashland Virginia.
