This is my favourite Crowded House song. It seemed to disappear for a long time though. It was a hit at the time, but then I don't think I heard it on the radio or anything like that for over a decade after that, even though their other hits remained in rotation. It was in the early 2000s and my mum and I had taken a trip to Sydney for the first time. We went into a small chocolate shop for a hot chocolate and this song happened to play on the radio in the shop. Perfect timing and it was so great to hear it again. I searched everywhere for that album on vinyl but to no avail, so I bought the CD when I got back to Melbourne. Now it has been reissued on vinyl so I'll have to pick that up eventually. It's a great album.
I doubt I'd have anything interesting to say to Neil or Tim if I ever ran into them, but I would love to have a chat with their parents and find out what sort of people produced these two masterminds.

This is just too much fun! I love that the Crowdies released this as the first single off Woodface. Had everybody scratching their heads. It felt like they knew they were beginning to be a big deal in America so they released this as a kind of funny prank. This song I think shows how much fun these 4 lads did actually have, before it began to get cramped and Tim left the group.
Capital DID NOT want them to release this as first single but CH insisted. In retrospect, Neil Finn said something like it probably contributed to poor sales and poor charting in the States and they ultimately shouldn’t have gone with it as lead single. Personally I didn’t care. I was 15, they were my favorite band, and Woodface tour was the first time I saw them in concert.
Most of the songs that Neil had written for Woodface was rejected by Capitol records. Neil had been working with Tim on songs for their brothers band which became known as Finn. So Neil asked if he could use some of those songs, and Tim said jokingly, if I can be in the band. Neil took it seriously so he became part of the band. But they are brothers and the peace didn’t last with Tim walking out in the middle of the tour to publicise Woodface.
Yes, oh yes, have been waiting to see this video in the States since, oh, FOREVER!! Thanks Neil!!!! Saw you guys on your Woodface tour in Seattle, Wa around 1991 approx. I had an awesome time...was quite the scorcher that day.. I was so appreciative when you sprayed us all down with a very large container of water!!! A Great show to remember!!!! How ironic that the meaning of the song about American/Western countries greed and excessive worship for the dollar, and it was they missed the whole point. Makes it even more of a classic song. I love the rockier sound of this track, the humour and who can not love the line 'Liberace must be laughing in his grave...' Wonderful stuff.
It also perfectly shows the degeneracy the West has fallen into. Say what you want about Putin, but he at least has values to defend. For the love of money is the root of all evil

So I don't get where the hate comes from because I don't hate you? Neil was the show, Tim should have backed off and I wish they would have been more successful. I got free tickets to the Crowded Boat for me and my girlfriend Susie, from KROQ in 1992.. was the best day ever with the band .. it was great!
