World Championship 2014 Finals (Standard): Patrick Chapin vs. Shahar Shenhar

- Shahar Shenhar gets the chance of a lifetime attempting to defend his World Championship title against Patrick "The Innovator" Chapin, a player whose focus has guided him to this very moment seven years after he finished second in the 2007 World Championship. Only one can make history.
Who misses the old days and not the crap we have now?
00:08: "Five days of worlds week are about to come to a *pulsating climax* "
Christ, Rich, there are kids watching this.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
asmr ear cleaning
Screw them kids i don't owe them nothing 😆
The guy on the left chuckles a bit
@Derek Malik thats a dick move
What a hard match to watch. Don't get me wrong, I am happy for Shahar and he played amazingly this weekend if you watch his feature match games, but seeing Patrick in that last game, mulligan, his hands shake, loses his poker face, and even undoes his tie. You can see he slowly watched his hard fought dream slip away.
They were also filming a documentary at the same time. Double the pressure.
Eh abzan players get no sympathy
This is one of the most painful things I've ever watched play out in real time. Chapin's redemption story was incredible to watch, and over the course of that hour it totally derailed and blew up right before the finish line.
Chapin is an big icon. never the less he never won the BIG ONE. he is the big one. a real deck builder. builder which have dreams inovations and skills. i've seen so many "pro tours over years" but hes the one which have the best decks build buy his own! thats why he became the worlds greatds for me
His hands shake because he's on amphetamines. Notice the jaw movement? He is 100% on amphetamines here. Probably helps him stay alert through a long tournament and I doubt MTG has any formal rules about that stuff. Given Patrick's history with drugs I'm sure he has no problem finding amphetamines.
I came here to see a pulsating climax
+Stephen Lin your womans.
That was such a sexually loaded introduction to the series...
Poor chapin man game three his heart was broken still will always be my favorite pro
Didn't he get busted for selling drugs or something?
@@droidean what does that have to do with anything?
@@goatsemarathon6642 it has to do with patrick chapin. Duh
@@droidean lol that was pretty good
Chapin looking into the camera the entire time. Lol.
He's staring into my soul.
yeah I was like.... hmm this is kind of awkward haha
Creepy
Camera man turned that thoughtseize gaze off immediately.
I hope I never hear Rich Hagon say the phrase "pulsating climax" again...
Oh that's his signature phrase. I think he said it at the end of the M15 Pro Tour too ;)
i dont know why i'm watching this... i dont even play magic
soon
Girthicus Maximus lol
+Kyppen I recommend trying it
+Kyppen Good to know im not the only bored idiot around here
+Mtg Allday I would love to play it, but i dont know anyone who plays it :( And i heard it can get very expensive
I miss when magic was this interesting
I love how Pat dressed up and all but Sahar looks like the average nerd.
For me actually looks the opposite
Shahar was in 3 World Championships in a row, 2 of them he won.
I'm a little sad that Chapin didn't get it, since he's been at it so long and it would have been quite a story. Shenhar is, barring incredible circumstances, guaranteed PT hall of fame when he becomes eligible, quite possibly as soon as it happens.
Incredible, back to back wins, Shahar Shenhar the man to beat in Magic now.
He got beat in 2015.
58:59 you can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half
they need to have a graphic that brings each card up on screen as each player plays a card and explain what each card is doing. I play mtg so I know what's going on but if you want to reach a more wide audience these broadcasts need to explain the game better. just my humble opinion
man why am I watching this at 2 am almost 6 years later
Dont ask me, I'm in the same situation 5 months later
Because we want to remember when magic tournament broadcasts and standard were good.
Why am I watching this 10 years after
Patrick, why do you do this to me? Why do you play Abzan with Mardu sleeves?
Because Dega is the new Junk.
I would honestly rather hear Chapin and Shenhar's commentary while playing, rather than the guys in the booth.
Agreed
***** He meant hearing what they players say during the game. Sounds stupid, but compared to these commentators, it's preferable
***** He meant hearing what they players say during the game. Sounds stupid, but compared to these commentators, it's preferable
Still watching this 7 years later..........
Congratz to Shahar, great tournament, great performance! He had the more powerful deck i think, so win deserved. But also feel really sorry for Patrick, he lost all three matches by just bad luck. The finals was no fun to watch seeing one contestant being wrecked because oft bad draws, thats sad.
Oh my golly what a match, do any of you know where I can find an interview of Chaplin after this match? I'm extremely curious.
It's almost like Shahar purposely plays crappy in the Pro Tours just so he can save the wins for the World Championship.
Is that how luck works? Don't use it up yet. Save it for later!
Haannibal777 Not Luck, but law of large numbers may apply.
I wouldn't mind knowing what kind of deck box that Shahar has here. It looks awesome.
I couldn't hope to be as good as those guys
so three blow-outs where Pat draws into absolutely nothing and Shen has Nut draws?
what a let down Final, not to mention it was Mid-range, the Re-range-ing.
Kinda reminds me of how ari lax won
No, Chapin's deck performed fine. He didn't sideboard well and played poorly, but that aside, his deck doesn't matchup well against Shenhar's deck which just goes over the top with Hornet Queen, Whip, and Soul of Innistrad.
Why don't they show both player's hands and the board as graphics the whole time? It's very strange.
WotC inpetitude my friend.
+Scare Yourself Do you know anyone that does?
Rex GameZ No. But it seems like a no brainer doesn't it? Maybe they will implement someday.
Because you can't see shit from the distance the camera sits at. Older returning players like myself, or newer players, don't know which cards are which and what cards do what. If it wasn't for the commentators and for Google I'd have no way to understand what is going on here.
Displaying both player's hands on screen just like Hearthstone tournaments do would make it a much more viewer friendly experience and generate a larger audience size
Pharya w
Will this help people learn the value of hushring griff?
I know eh. I run 3 mainboard in my Jeskai Wins deck. The card is filthy against so many other powerful cards in standard. At worst, it is a pseudo-haste flier that pokes at them for 2 each turn.
Finally! Someone else gets it!
/watch?v=MXQXoDWC7EA
I'm only here for the "pulsating climax" hahahahaHA!
Patrick Chapin looks like Bobby Fischer
Good thing he isn't Bobby Fischer he'd probably never agree to play against Shenhar
Now that you mention it.
Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing.
Man that match shattered Chapin.
34:27 Does Chapin cast bile blight (2 black mana) with a plains and a G/B land? or did i miss something??
there is an urborg
I miss what a nice game MTG was, before the days of MTG Arena
Now this is a Bully free event
lol
Chapin was on fire the whole time leading up to this match, draft, modern, etc. It really looked like this was his worlds after all these years and in the final match his deck just gave him mediocre plays.
a pulsating climax
Round Arthur glad I'm not the only one who caught that
at 34:30 when Chapin casts double bile blight to avoid death, it looks like he taps 3 black mana and a plains. Am I seeing this wrong or is he cheating?
He had Uborg, all his lands was swamps.
Did he literally just say "Shahar Israeli good"?
Great coverage! Great Match!
He showed no emotion. I can't imagine being that much of a badass!! Sick
Spoilers
Chapin got really unlucky, but he kinda deserved that, after what luck did to Yamamoto.
Still, keep up the fight Patrick.
It's too smooth gameplay, making me nervous :) MtG for me is best friends, shouting and beers :)
meh, Chapin for life. Not a Shahar fan. I was wanting it for Patrick.... oh well
More concentrating on the game, less eye-raping the camera...Fuck that was creepy.
Patrick Chapin looks like he's on a ton of adderall during this match lol. The sweating, the twitching, the teeth-grinding... Definitely looks like some sort of upper.
In game 1 at 7:00 , how did Chapin cast the Courser he got with Ajani? Courser is 1GG and he tapped only one land that could produce green mana..
Sandsteppe Citadel produces Green.
Oh, right... for some reason, I thought it was Nomad Outpost haha.. my bad!
why there are no sponsors? thought that is a common thing on such events
5:00 why not thoughtseize the cut away, then play courser? you know he's just going to cut sidisi in response to the trigger. At this point the thoughtseize is unlikely to hit anything else, since chapin will just cast everything he topdecks.
Nice to see that Rich Hagon still adds absolutely NOTHING to the commentary.
Hes adds so much nothing.
I really wish they'd replace him. He really comes off as a cynical douchebag when he's talking to Shehar..
All of the. Otha g in this commentary is brought to you by Rich Hagan.
The Sultai have triumphed over the Abzan for the battle of the world. I guess they might get a diving lesson or become zombies. Well good thing I don't live on that plane.
I hate to rag on the commentators because they seem like really cool guys but this whole tournament the only person who adds any insight to the game is Simon Gortzen and Randy. Its pretty bad when either of those two have to share the commentating with someone who clearly offers nothing to the coverage. If you're covering a huge event like this and have worked in the game for as long as these people have I expect so much more. I don't want these guys to get fired or anything but coverage is so bad in this tournament. I'll say it once and I'll say it again if you get the SCG guys covering these events it would go from a D+ to an A+. Please Wizards, consider bringing Cedric Phillips and Patrick Sullivan to the coverage team for these events. Or at least get LSV, Stark, Hill, anyone who actually knows something about the very complicated board states and play decisions.
SCG forever
Umm, it's pretty standard for commentary teams to be a "color guy" (Rich Hagan) and an analyst. If you have two analysts, the coverage tends to be very dry and uninteresting. Sometimes you need someone to crack a joke, or get excited about a play,or to tease out a storyline instead of just focusing on the gameplay.
Matt F SCG coverage does it no problem, but their humor and excitement isnt cheesy or clueless. They manage to crack jokes while also giving a clear understanding of the match. Ive been watching coverage for a couple years and i definitely prefer commentors who talk about the in depth plays instead of exaggerating or getting excited every time someone draws a spell. Im not against adding lightness to the commentary it just can be done so much better. Watch some scg open series matches and you'll see what im talking about. I like to think people watching these matches dont need to be "teased" any storyline. Just my opinion of course, but magic players tend to be smarter than the average person and Id like the coverage to reflect that. Maybe im being harsh but some of the things these guys say makes it look like they just started playing
Jacob Alarcon But if they talk about complicated lines of play the whole time, you risk alienating new players watching their first event. Trust me, I've watched SCG coverage too. I think they're both fine.
+Matt F i dont think its too hard to explain certain interactions in terms beginning players would understand. Thats part of being a good commentator. I used to be confused watching this stuff but it was from the SCG guys and pros that really taught me how the best players play. I learned more from commetators like lSV or Patrick Sullivan than I ever could from Rich Hagan. Youre right you have to appeal to new players but theres a better way of doing it. I know Im not the only who feels this way about the coverage. I mean for a while it seemed like the coverage was getting better but they dropped the ball on this year. I wish we could just see how it would be with the SCG guys. Thanks for your insight though i think youre right its important to appeal to new players, magic gets complicated quick
Is Chapen always so shaky? I noticed before G2 that his hands have a minor tremor.. Doesn't seem to be the type to be nervous, so I'm curious.
Might be adrenaline
some people just have shaky hands, my left hand is naturally shaky after having wrist surgery,
Wtf is with Patrick... does anyone else find it quite uncomfortable watching Patrick Chapin?
+Breathe1234 I was looking for this comment
Try watching Brian Kibler. His constant loonatic style shuffling drives me mental.
Kibler is a genuinely good dude, and very clever, but the reason I learned of him was because of his ADHD/Meth head twitching while playing a Hearthstone invitational on Twitch.tv
the way he stares at the camera non-stop creeps me out ahaha
Green has the best flier in the game.
What the hell happened to the color pie? Going to be glad when this nonsense rotates in a year.
This is what happens when the Commander cards find their way into Standard. I look forward to getting True-Name Nemesis in M16.
"best flier in the game"
Standard doesn't really represent magic as a whole, blue still has the best 2 fliers in the game right now (Vendillion clique and insectile aberration), just sayin is all
Four points of contention.
1.) Modern and Legacy are substantially worse representations of Magic given the formats are dictated entirely by what gets played on turns 1 and 2 and are 90% tempo oriented.
2.) Standard is the set of cards new players will see when buying packs and being introduced to the game. If the standard is set by powerful cards that are as powerful as they are due to breaks in the color pie, it causes a misunderstanding of what it means to be green, blue, et al.. Hornet Queen sets a standard that says "Green gets powerful fliers iconically," which is an absolute misrepresentation of its slice of the color pie and of gameplay. Hornet Sting, Prodigal Sorcerer, and Frozen Solid haven't seen reprinting in standard for quite a while, and it isn't hard to gather why given how much they misrepresent the color pie. It certainly SHOULD act as a representation of Magic as a whole, because it is the format that gets the most publicity, is the only format outside of limited that sets are designed around, and is the format that is most readily available to the public.
3.) Blue has efficient fliers. They are not the best flying creatures in Magic on the whole, in any format, but they are efficient in the tempo-driven formats in which they dominate. I know I'd much rather Exhume a Hornet Queen than a Delver or a Clique myself, but hey, what do I know about the difference between 6-power of aerial deathtouch spread over five bodies compared to a 3/2 french vanilla. I'm being facetious, but it doesn't need much more saying that blue's fliers are not the best strictly speaking.
4.) Delver of Secrets is an unplayable vanilla 1/1 if the deck isn't built to cater to it, and Vendilion Clique is an admittedly other example of a color pie violation that should have been printed in UB but also made at a time amidst other violators that themselves have not seen reprinting.
This isn't something that should be dismissed by two-line comments about xyz formats.
PopcornBunni
1) I should point out that I was not referring to the power level of the cards in specific formats, but rather the power level of them in terms of if you built decks using every card in the game (ie. vintage) Moreover, I doubt hornet queen would outperform V-Clique in more variations of standard. As I don't really play enough of it, I can't really make any hard and fast statements in regards to the current one, but...
2) Particularly in it's original printing, the flying on hornet queen was more like reach than anything, just a more flavorfully fitting version. Anyway, if we're going to talk about power level causing breaks in the colour pie, I don't think that hornet queen is the biggest issue. Young Pyromancer is considered to be the best creature in the game by many, and yet it's in red, similarly, snapcaster mage and delver are both "breaking the colour pie" These cards certainly aren't old, and I think that it merely represents the fact that just because a card has a particularly playable card in an area it should be weak in, does NOT mean that it's violating the colour pie.
3) I believe that Hilbert's comment basically outlines my feelings on the matter. Efficiency and tempo are essential to a cards power level. If you're not considering cost, then it doesn't come close to emrakul, grisselbrand or iona, amusingly all very real exhume targets in competitive play.
4) Just because you need to have support does not mean that it's any worse. Hornet queen is unplayable without forests, hell, I doubt it's good without any form of ramp, stall or whip (though, don't quote me on that, I don't know how fast standard is right now). I also disagree that Clique should be in UB, the effect is different to discard as it replaces itself, and doesn't even put it in the graveyard. Granted, it is stretching the ideas of information, control and mind manipulation, but it is in no way completely out of the blue end of the colour pie.
rowcla and also in blue, consecrated sphinx
So in tournaments you are aloud to use old prints of basic land cards? o;
You can use any version of a card that is legal in the format, most definitely including lands. Occasionally you'll see guys playing with Russian or Japanese versions of cards, or old versions of cards like a 10th edition Cancel. As long as the card is legal in the format it doesn't matter which expansion it comes from. Most places won't let you do something like play a full deck of Japanese cards, though, because they'll have no way to verify your cards are legal unless there is a Japanese literate judge. There is a clause in the rules about putting undo stress on the tourney organizers or some such, so they can pretty much ban things like foreign cards if they don't have the resources to deal with them. So be careful with that. Otherwise go nuts :).
haha thanks man :P
Hey, Ben, give us a pithy assessment of the match: 100:35
He talks nonstop for nearly FOUR MINUTES!
Question: It looks like at 34:28 Chapin casts his second Bile Blight for a black and a white mana. How is this possible? what am i missing? thx :)
+Pieter Wolfs Urborg was out, so all lands are considered swamps along with their original type.
He had a special land on board, Urborg, that makes all other lands a Swamp in addition to their original types
Ah I had the same question, missed the Urborg. I forgot that was in standard! Thanks
16:00 why did he get a token to Wingmaterock?????
How come a lot of times when I'm trying to do homework I end up watching Magic.
But can they beat Gadnuk, Breaker of Worlds?
Zphyre EU No, they need more mana.
Much much MUCH more i swear
I played against him once for fun
I got my ass handed to me...
you can see patrick is shaking, ide be terrified too.
In game 2, when Chapin puts Elspeth out and immediately into the graveyard, doesn't he get to retain priority to use her +1? Shouldn't he have at least gotten the 3 soldiers?
Elspeth was countered by Disdainful Stroke. It never resolved.
Oh, I thought the announcer said it was Hero's Downfall-ed
Chapins jaw is swinging like crazy, the mans on some sort of stimulant.
anyone what set those forests are from that shahar is using?
Question about Elspeth going to the graveyard during the fasts Elspeth ever talk. What happened? If Elspeth hits the field, shouldn't he have been able to use an ability first?
Elspeth on the stack, Elspeth resolves. Chapin has priority. Shouldn't he have been able to use her before any instants could be cast?
Shenhar countered it with Disdainful stroke
what block is shahars basic lands from?
I didn’t know bobby fischer played magic
patrick so shakey, and i dont blame him
First time I've ever watched pro Magic and I'm new to Magic in general - what is it that they're writing down after almost every turn?
They are writing down life totals.
Do they only record their own life or both theirs and their opponent's for fairness' sake?
Both. They also write down cards they see off courser/thoughtseize.
Love the outfit of Chapin
Good for shahar running it back, but damn did I want Patrick to win..
It's too hard to understand what's going on in real time for me. I'd rather be able to hear what the players are saying to each other in order to understand what's really going on, closer looks at the cards on the table, what phases are happening at which time, etc. When are attacks happening? I'm just seeing numbers drop all the sudden. This is clearly produced specifically for people that know every detail about MTG.
1:00:26 the dude on the right nods so enthusiastically
Nvm actually he was nervous as frick
And he talked forever
lay off the redbull chapin.
Not sure it's redbull, 3 bottles of only water under the desk on Chapin's side near right ankle
Nah, there's 2 cans of Red Bull in the same area. He even takes a sip out of one of the Red Bull cans on camera at 0:44 seconds in.
@@Jsmuuve he takes speed tho
Whats with the quality??
Sorry commentators this game was not all skill for Shahar. Getting here maybe, but when Chapin had crap draws and Shahar had absolutely great draws...there is some luck to that.
He was staring that camera down like it was nobody's buisness
I understand this less than texas hold 'em and I don't know sht about texas hold 'em!
magic is a resource game. you have a health pool of 20 points. if you lose all your points, you lose. creature cards can remove points by successfully dealing damage to the player. you use land cards to produce mana necessary to spend on said creature cards
There is no way you can explain magic in one paragraph lol
lol
lol right, I laughed as I red that paragraph as it explains almost nothing especially at least level of play. BUT I guess as far as a quick intro it's not a bad explanation for the most basic explanation possible.
oh and there's this thing called the stack... yeah we don't talk about that.
It's just hard to believe 2 anafenzas in the side, months after this she was a 4 of main card
I would have kept playing magic but two factors. A) Online not compatible with Apple software and (B) Paper game market is insanely high. If you want to play competitively you better be ready to play mono red or get a sponsorship.
These guys must get so much poontang
Patrick was shaking. Does he have some problem ? Or he was just nervous ?
Chapin is always shaking
+Renan I've heard he has some sort of nervous system problem that gets to him when he is stressed.
Am I the only one who doesn't understand why it says world championship 2014, but the hornet queen is from the 2015 core set?
Magic 2015 was released July 18th 2014
+Totally not a pineapple ..... How does that even make sense??
MrGelflin it's like Fifa, Fifa 15 was released September 23rd 2014, it's probably to make it sound newer and better.
What's wrong with the back of their cards plz respond
I don't understand the question.
You mean they use sleeves?
You're joking right?
Ya the sleeves I started magic like 3 months ago so I'm kinda new
I always get a kick out of the, "He deserves..." statements following the loss by a fan favorite. They did this for Reid Duke when Shahar beat him the year before as well.
No one deserves to win. They have to play the games and earn it. Chapin earned his way to the final, but Shahar earned the win.
"Chapin worked so hard to get to this position!" He did, but no harder than Shahar did.
Mulligans and luck are such a small fraction of what matters at the highest level, but the average player isn't at that level. So they blame anything other than their own decision trees.
until what age you can compete ?
There's no limit to age. For Worlds you just have to do well in other events.
Why must Patrick keep Staring at my soul
did he really say "pulsating climax"?
Is Pat feeling OK? He seems to be shaking alot and generally uncomfortable :/
I know this is a 4 year old comment, and I don’t care! Haha he has a medical condition called “familial tremors” which causes him to shake. He actually eats 12,000 calories a day (he’s talked about it in the past) because he just needs them due to caloric expenditure.
How can i get easy a planeswalker without use to much money?
Buy a cheap one, or trade for one that somebody already owns? I mean… duh?
How the hell did he even get to finals with an Abzan Midrange deck against things like Control and god forbid Whip decks?
I expect to see Hornet queen rise up in price after this final
The reason the sidisi deck did so well is because everyone played midrange decks the whip deck did terrible in the pro tour because everyone and there mother played jeskai tempo
i dont understand what is going on
If it touches your hand, it counts as drawing extra cards
God damn, what a way to lose...sorry Patrick
45:46
Harry Potter reference?!>!?!
If I put Hornet Queen on the battlefield upon a whip activation and then destroy her with one of my spells, does she end up in the graveyard again?
no
Whip has a clause in the ability that covers the creatures leaving play before the end of turn, forcing an exile no matter what.
Around 52-57 min one of the commentators sound like he is choking. =)
This was just weird...a bunch of older guys saying their hall of famers in MTG
The only way I'll play abzan colors is the constellation deck.
