This interview was done around the time I had him produce my layout. Very thorough with asking what you want in your layout. He even has a questionnaire for you to fill out. Excellent work. Currently building mine now.

I'm surprised that this video has so few views and only 2 viewer comments after so long. Normally whenever I release a layout design video, I get several thousand views in the first day.
Although Bill and I disagree on some aspects of layout design, I do follow his work to some extent. He was the one who inspired me to go into business as a professional layout designer, and I too am fully booked up months in advance despite putting up my prices last year. Yes, I'm one of the guys who uses 3rd-plan-it for all my designs.

Thank you for reaching out. I would love more views too, but we are slave to the TH-cam Algorithm.

@@ModelRailroadTechniques Maybe I can help you. I could do an interview with you along the same lines as this one. Afterwards, make the video available to me. I'll publish a few snippets on my channel with a link to the full interview on your channel. Once my viewers get there, you just have to find a way to convince them to watch more of your content.

@@mpeterll I have watched some of your design videos myself. I have enjoyed them and obtained ideas for my own layout. This one also has valid points for myself and others, depending on one's view of their "dream" layout which is why I watch so many. I think, in my humble opinion, that a personal, direct approach on youtube, goes over better than an interview type setting. I enjoy learning in both formats. An interview with you on MRT would be something I would watch.

@@honestgbfan5324 I was interviewed on MRT a few weeks ago. The video was released recently.

@@ModelRailroadTechniques It was around the 10 minute mark when he started talking about the "railfanning" of a model railroad becoming tiresome after a few years and owners getting bored with just watching trains go by. My layout is primarily designed for operations, and railfanning is more of an afterthought. However, I just watched a similar video by @djstrains that made me realize my primary railyard is too big for the industries that it serves. I'm not going to change it because it's the centerpiece of the layout and my favorite aspect of the layout, but it was still a realization that I noted. Great interview!

...and I have too much track near the edge with not enough room for scenery...hard to help on a shelf-style layout when you want to include an industry in the scene as well.

Very good interview. It has been about a year since the video in which Bill talked about coming back to do a more in depth discussion of realistic operations and to go over a plan from it’s inception and the stages that followed. Is there a plan for that second interview? I believe a lot of people would be interested in that content.

Great Video. glad that I came across it as my layout is still being placed together. Benchwork done, and now trying to figure out the "drop down" section to the staging area underneath. Where I live in Reno, NV, they have lowered the tracks to not interfere with traffic as the City has grown so much. I plan on incorporating this into my own around the walls shelf layout, to drop the tracks below the table level for staging rather than using a Helix. The going is slow, but it has allowed me many opportunities to watch videos such as this and tweak my own plan for above the table level. Thanks for putting this out there :)
