- AEF DW: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
The American Eagle Foundation is saddened to announce the loss of our beloved educational eagle ambassador, Franklin. After surviving a gunshot wound in 1995, Franklin was deemed non-releasable due to a wingtip amputation and was brought to the American Eagle Foundation. Franklin lived on Eagle Mountain Sanctuary at Dollywood Theme Park for over 25 years and was one half of a USFWS-permitted bald eagle breeding pair with Independence, fondly known as Frank & Indy. As a nesting pair, Frank and Indy contributed significantly to the resurgence of the bald eagle population in the Great Smoky Mountains with over 30 offspring released into the wild.
