      I have a Jansport Right Pack. I love the minimal pockets (keeps it light and comfortable) and I personally hate water bottle pockets - I either carry my water bottle or keep it inside the bag.

    Great video, but I’m disappointed you didn’t give a shoutout to the company who made your little snack bags. Colibri is a Canadian company creating reusable snack bags that are fully washable so you can eliminate ziplock bags. Please check out the great work that they are doing.

    Awesome video! My problem right now is I want to have products from better companies that are B certified or just reflect my beliefs better... But I only recently got into purchasing this way. My 5 year old backpack still works great so I can't justify getting a new one, even if I donated it I'm not positive it would find a new home! Same thing with clothes... Nike is a pretty terrible company all around but the running gear I have by them will at least last a while. Reusing what I have is better for the earth... But it doesn't advertise more eco friendly products to others. It's a tough choice.

      Hey you're just making your way into it! My old toothbrush is plastic but it's still good! Just gradually make that transition because like you said, you've got stuff already that works in the meantime. Thanks for the comment!

      For the Nike gear you could always when possible try to remove the logo. If it’s old then it may already be peeling off. I’m 22 and I still have leggings from Nike that I bought when I was 14 and they’re nowhere near in need of replacement BUT the small logo on the side finally rubbed off entirely so if you’re lucky and with a little help from some strong fingernails yours may come off as well and voila, you’re not advertising for Nike anymore.

    • @sonipitts
      @sonipitts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Don't forget that when those Nikes fall apart, Nike will take them back to turn into recycled athletic and playground surfaces (and they'll take other brand sneakers, too). So it's not a total waste. Next time you can buy more sustainable sneakers...and then recycle those via Nike or other such programs when they're dead as well. recyclenation.com/2012/08/nike-reuse-shoe-program/

      @@sonipitts thanks for this. I've heard of it but I usually donate my shoes to a second hand store or homeless program or something. Thats having grown out of them or whatever though, if my shoes fall apart or are unusable I'll look into this.

    When your bag wears out and needs to be replaced, check out Tom Bihn bags. Made in Seattle. I love them because they're designed around the principles of space economy and usability. The bags have great built-in pockets, along with O-rings positioned strategically throughout that you can use to clip on pouches, pockets, and other accessories to suit your needs. I've had my Synapse 19 for about 7 years of hard use, and it's still going strong! I've had a couple of repairs done over the years, but the lifetime warranty means they did the repairs at no cost to me. (I also have one of their now-retired Smart Alec bags, which I use for hiking and traveling light.)

    You could sew/have someone sew an additional mesh pocket on the other side of your bag, as well as add some extra pockets on the inside. You'd end up with a unique bag tailored to you, with little to no additional waste! I'm about to take my favourite bag to a tailor this weekend to see if they can add some side pockets! :)

    I've been using a waterproof Ortlieb bike bag everyday for 3 years for commuting, grocery shopping / other errands, pretty much everything. It's been remarkably durable considering what I put it through. I personally like the "big dry bag to throw stuff in" type of backpack, but it also has a laptop sleeve and a small zip pouch on the outside. Could sure use more little pockets though.

    I bought a highserria backpack from Costco that's a beast ( well few more pockets and one more water mesh) .
    Only down side why i hated it and went back to my big student jansport cause the bag wasn't roomy. More pockets don't mean more space for this bag. The bag would expand/lump up to capacity with less stuff than my jansport.
    maybe all these backpack pocket people should design something better than the bags out now

    • @LeahandLevi

    If you want more organization in that main compartment but don’t want to get a new bag, consider getting a Tom BIHN Freudian slip. The s25 or s19 one will probably fit in the main compartment and add a ton of organization. To get stuff you need, just lift the slip out - it beats digging stuff up from the bottom of your bag. I use one and it works great.

    How old is Nada, the store? Because we’ve had a store like that in my hometown in Australia for up of 20 years now. It’s incredibly successful and the town is so into zero waste that there’s now a second bulk store in a town that’s not massive.
    I have a bag clipped to every handbag I own. Best idea I ever had. BTW you can get collapsible straws on eBay...but sadly it came in a plastic sleeve, I was not impressed. I figure it’s still less though because it’s so small I carry it everywhere and I never use disposable straws now.

    Levi you could see if you can DIY those things you don’t like about your bag. You can find a zipper at a thrift store and sew a zipper on your wallet pocket (zippers are very easy to hand-sew) and sew a pouch on the side of your bag. I know DIYs are time-consuming but it could get more mileage and enjoyment out of your bag.

If you’re still finding that you want more pockets, you may want to look at the “Freudian Slip” from Tom Bihn. They have a variety of them that fit in different sized bags (they’re designed for Tom Bihn’s bags, but work great in other companies bags too). Basically it’s a bag shaped insert that has lots of pockets and pouches.

      @@LeahandLevi there's no sugar in common toothpaste, it tastes sweet(ish) because of artificial sweeteners like saccharin or xylitol, which despite their 'chemical' names are pretty benign.

    Wearing the kånken backpack like a bum doesn't help for comfort. In my opinion it's the absolute best backpack you can get. In some occasions you might need an extra removable internal sleeve/pouch for organizing though.

    You may already know this, but there's another company, Bite, that sells toothpaste tablets in glass bottles which ship completely plastic free. They taste like those butter mint candy things; you might like them better. Awesome content as usual, great work.👍

    Hi Levi! Great video, and I really appreciate your content!
    I have a question though. What are your thoughts on purchasing based on convenience?
    An example that made me think of this question.
    I have bought three collapsible bags that I keep in my bag and use for all of my shopping. Now. These are from no name generic companies that are not B certified, and were clearanced out items. But. I was present in store and didn't create any extra waste via packaging from shipping, or emissions, even if they are cancelled out like some do.
    So. In instances like that does it sort of break even?
    I feel at a loss when in conversation debating purchase in store of questionable product vs. shipping purchase of good product.
    Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but yeah.
    Thank you! 💜

    In case you still have that backpack consider upgrading to the Patagonia Blackhole 32l eu.patagonia.com/gb/en/product/black-hole-pack-32-liters/49301.html
    It is a large backpack with an insane amount of space. Also very comfy to wear, is 100% waterproof and of course it's from Patagonia :D

    I found your channel recently and like what you're about! Whenever you mention Nada market I'm wondering if it's pronounced "nada" as in "nothing" in Spanish. It would make sense being there is no packaging.

    How do you feel about supporting a local company that produces reusable products verses the big companies ?

    • @LeahandLevi
      @LeahandLevi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Local is never a bad idea but it does depend on the materials that they use. Going to a small local business that uses garbage materials is not better than going with a big business that sources responsibly. Hope this helps!
