The fact AI prompters have to generate sketches and WIP's to appear like legitimate artists just tells me how desperate they are to fake their skills and how little respect they have for even AI generated images.
If they wanna get jobs with fake sketches, I'd say let em and subsequently get fired.

Attention to artists who post sketches: add a stock image (recommended to use animal images) to your sketch. Make sure it overlaps with the lines just a little bit. This has been proven to mess with the AI and generate a completely unrelated image to the sketch

As a manhwa artists, when I first saw this I thought it would be super useful to produce lineart quickly to adapt to tight hellish deadlines of 70-90 panels a week (not to mention if the chapter has more than 2 characters interacting in a scene, it's quite a heavy load to draw). tried a few of my sketches and it totally butchered my artstyle with a more generic style 😒
It sucks that this tool will be more useful to art stealers than artists themselves

I was just wondering about this, especially as a big fan manhua! I knew that this would be seen as a soulless tool, but I know that some publishing platforms such as Webtoon are infamous for overworking their artists, hence why many feature 3D backgrounds and pngs, and, while the quality of the work may suffer, it may at least prevent creators from.exhausting themselves.

    • @leoncantsing

I guess that's the idea. Manwhas tend to have a generic style anyway. It is more difficult to train an AI to understand your personal style (you would have to train it yourself with your drawings or similar styles). Also you still have to make corrections, it's not very practical

Even animation studios would be a bad idea to automate things like inbetweening, because who does those jobs? Junior animators looking to break into the animation industry. You get rid of the entry level jobs and you knock out the ladder for the people at the bottom trying to climb.
And please don't say indie is the solution, because the vast majority of indie animation struggle to crowdfund anywhere near what they need for a living, and fail to reach even a million views. Indie studios are great and making animation out of love and passion is aspiration, but they are not a replacement for the entire animation industry because the unfortunate reality is executives have the money and animators kind of need to eat food to live. Fans shouldn't be proclaiming the virtues of indie if they refuse to support them.

same thing with the programing industry too. I actually agree with you. If used correctly, a tool that could refine A Sketch would be great. I have really shaky hands and struggle quite a bit, and no matter what anybody says it does limit the kind of art that I can do. I have been drawing since I was a very small child, and practicing frequently for years, so I know it isn't a skill issue.
What a lot of people don't realize about AI tools that they are not going to help anybody who does not know at least the fundamentals of what the AI is trying to assist them with. A person who uses an image generator with no idea of what makes good construction of an image will turn out a crappy image. A person who uses AI to write stories without understanding how to construct a good story will turn out a crappy story. I have a friend who went blind who uses AI image generators to make pictures. They are quite pretty.
We need to remember that the tools themselves are not what is the enemy here. It's how the tools get their information and what corporate institutions want to use them for that crushes creativity, not the existence of the tools themselves.

@@Fairygoblet I also have quite shaky hands. What can help is using markers/brushes with thinner lines and more friction, and to draw from the shoulder instead of the wrist.
In certain digital art programs (like MSpaint) there are tools that can straighten out your lines and take what little shakiness is left away.
You can look up more tips. I'm very, Very new to taking art seriously, and I managed to make my lineart okayish. You can do so too.

Will say, as someone who has taken several commissions this seems like a nightmare. With this tool, given that it is common for artists to send sketches to clients to see if it is ok or not, commissioners can just be ghosted after seeing that sketch.... since the AI could technically "finish the piece for them."

There are some good news going around every now and then and I'm happy to see regulations being made here and there, but it's still very slow - meanwhile ai is not slow. So yeah.. here's hope that more people wake up, more companies and people in power speak against it and/or create limitations/regulations/rules. In best case rules that make new upcoming ai-startups think twice bc they'd be afraid of serious consequences. And that's what we all need in this whole chaos: SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES and inspections of such AI-companies.

Bruh 'tools' like this are so deceptive too, they dont solve any problems that can't be solved already in better ways. Artists who get injured from drawing/ extended desk hours etc need better healthcare access and better working conditions- less hours and less demanding turnarounds so their bodies can rest. Every stroke in a drawing is a choice and thats what gives art it's soul! Programs like this can't replicate any of that and are shifting the focus away from how we can help artists' health and wellbeing just because it's a quicker and faster way to solve the problem, but does it infinitely worse while stealing from these same artists :(

I’ve heard somebody compare these “artists” to that halo speed runner who faked his speedruns and when he was invited to a speed running event he was made to sit there and play through the entire game.

This is honestly scary cause something similar to the first example had happened to me at my high school though I ended up getting the person to remove the ai piece from their submission for a work it was so stressful.

The issue with AI isn't with AI, but with the people who make it who are driven by greed. This should motivate artists to engage with the tools rather than being a scared luddite. By actively being involved with AI tools, people with higher ethical standards can influence the direction of AI. Being involved is necessary to raise the bar of ethical and artistic quality. So if you care about this shit, you should download these programs as soon as possible, and failing to do so lets the assholes run around and do whatever they want. We aren't putting the genie back in the bottle. The only thing that can stop a bad guy with an AI paintbrush is a good guy with an AI paintbrush.

Yesss. AI itself has been in many drawing programs for years. Granted, not to the level of what we’re seeing nowadays, but still. AI is a tool. It has no vision, no motivations, no life experience, no passion. it only follows commands based on an input! It could never replace artists in the long term, but it can certainly help them. I really think the main reason things are so bad right now with all the stealing art and unethical uses of AI is because it’s new. People are taking advantage of it as much as they can. But sooner or later, with such blatant ethical and copyright issues, it’s bound to get fixed. I know a few companies that are looking to ethically integrate the technology into their productions, using only their original art samples to train it, to help artists and to speed up the pipeline. AI is here to stay, so experimenting and testing things out is the only way to develop alongside it and stay on top of the current tech. (Though I do hope they find a way to not make it so bad for the environment..)

The real issue, capitalism will increasingly be incompatible with AI as it advances. The very idea at it's core, of humans competing to do labor for an income, just to survive, has to go.

Traditional artist here! I have a question for digital artists. To be clear: I think that you are legit artists and I respect you and your medium/tool choice. The question I am going to ask is only due to my curiosity and my lack of knowledge about digital art, not to any discredit I want to drag you in. How would you compare this AI tool with the lineart stabilisation tool I have seen in some speedpaintings (I don't know if it has a specific name)? I struggle a lot with lineart, it's all wobbly, and sometimes I envy digital artists who have this tool to make beautiful smooth lines. It's ok, we use different tools. But this AI lineart thing, how similar or different is it? What differences or similarities do you see between letting a program improve your line trajectories and an AI improving all the lines in a drawing? Or, for example, between stealing a sketch and tracing it with the stabilisation tool, or giving it to the lineart AI to ink (it's theft in both cases, but is one case more artistic or more artificial than the other)? I am genuinely curious about your opinions, surely more informed than mines. And also I am not equating digital art to AI pixel clumps, but this is a specific case in which my ignorance makes it difficult for me to distinguish between the two, that's why I am curious about less ignorant takes than mine.

Well... I don't use stabilization, so I'll let other digital artists answer this. But I believe the main issue is control.
I had to disable stabilization because it would turn my lines smooth and unnatural when I aim for a sketchy charcoal on rough paper tecture in my lineart, and I believe other artists juggle with the settings according to their style and needs.
But they still have an input on every line and a feedback from the program as they draw. While here they finish the sketch and the computer does all the interpretation without a proper back and forth during the proccess, for many people the end result may be a different piece all together.
I've used Ai tools to color sketches I had no intention on doing anything important with ( like a painting for a Minecraft building) and I always got that feeling that the end result is wildly different from what I would've been able to make if i colored it myself.

@@elisehalflight Thank you for sharing! I'll wait for other digital artists who consistently use stabilisation to answer, but your comment is nevertheless interesting, it gives me an idea of a possible approach to digital art, and I am grateful that you took the time to write it!

I use stabilization in my drawings (10-15%) all the time, but my lines are confident enough to where I barely notice. However, the difference is the input, so to speak. If I were to steal a sketch, trace over it, clean it up and finalize the product all with the use of stabilization, it would essentially be equivalent to simply using a tool (i.e. using the liquifying tool on my line art) and still working with effort to make an artwork I am satisfied with. Between an art program with this built-in tool to improve my lines and their shape vs. an AI tool that improves all the lines in a drawing and producing what it thinks looks appealing, the AI line art feels more like theft and cheating to me. However, I can accept that I am biased. But in my opinion, comparing the line stabilization tool to this AI technology is like comparing using a dictionary/Thesaurus to using AI generators in my writing to get an end product. There is still thought, and effort put into the writing while being aided by a dictionary, but the end product still comes from my mind as well as the meaning of the work, similar to my final line art as it does not come from any AI technology.
Overall, the entire concept behind the AI tech in the video is terrifying since I do both digital and traditional works. I do genuinely fear theft would rise so much for both digital and traditional creators and their sketches, but I can only hope something is created to counteract this.

In media it’s always art and creativity that ai can’t never take over, but reality sure is grim.
Even so, we have to fight and push these tech bros down the drain.
