The headcrabs are small but they can be shot down by shotgun blast easily, but most of the shotgunners where shooting their own kind, more like friendly fire, and they don't even care whether they killed they're men.
I retested the first battle. It is true the combine shotgun soldiers are killing themselves, but are doing so more easily with the help of the poison headcrabs reducing their health to 1. The poison headcrabs can't kill in Garry's Mod; the illusion that they can in the first battle is because the kill counter was not on when recording.
