  • The Heel Hook is the Knock-out punch of grappling, it came be a applied from a variety of positions and can achieve a break in an instant.
    Many BJJ schools ban this maneuver and claim that it is too dangerous and is sometimes consider a "cheap" move. I couldn't dissagree more. The Leg lock is a highly technical submission hold. In regards to safety, the leg lock can cause a break far faster then a armlock or Kimura and should be train with a higher level of precaution.
    When training legs lock be sure to apply pressure gradually if at all for that matter. I personally don't apply pressure and simply focus on make the tights possible grip, hold for a few seconds and release. My objective is to practice the powerful submission without Hurting anyone.

    He came to our gym in Houston recently and was amazing. A couple of the brown belts wanted to try him out and he just tapped them over and over. Fun to watch.

    Very good! Very similar to how i learned it years ago from instructive books and videos. I started with Karo Parisyan's Judo for MMA and then found Gokor Chivichyan's footlock dvds of basics,defenses, counters and throws into leglocks n foot locks.Really great material but suprising (to me anyway) that many people didnt take notice of it. Either way it made it easy for me to tap people left and right who had much more experience than I. Your passion and open mindednss shows in your videos and teaching style sir.May you be blessed in your passion and adventures.

    So key takeaway, reap/trap their knee when you're in side control and they knee shield in, from here fall back into position, then ensure you grab the Achilles to expose the heel, meanwhile your legs are in position and your inside leg kicks and stretches their rear leg out to stop them rolling into it, you switch legs to stop yours getting attacked. Then you lock down the submission. Ensure to finish, you must raise your hips while turning their toes towards the mat.

    Great tutorial! Love the way you break it down with freeze frames and the screen markup! Quick question: Do you feel leg locks are an effective street defense move? Ie, do you feel that different footwear or the different types of pants people wear make foot looks more or less effective? awesome video Firas! I have already started to implement pulling web guard into my game and leg locks. Got a quick question. To get good at MMA do you it is better to build a base in one art first or learn MMA as a whole? the reason I ask is because Rory is one of your guys who started with just learning MMA. If you do think it is to learn one style first ,what style would that be? Thanks in advance

    • @CoachZahabi
      @CoachZahabi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I would suggest learning MMA as a whole with an emphasis on one of the arts. I would then cycle through the arts. Think about it as majoring in one art while minoring in another.

    • @randybryantjr3909
      @randybryantjr3909 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      And when you mean cycle through the arts do mean its "pure" form or " for MMA" if that's a thing? And I assume cycles are based on weaknesses, strengthens, time in between fights etc., correct?

    Amazing detail. Thanks a lot. I trained with a Luta Livre guy out here in Brazil which I showed some of these moves to (what little I understand of them). He showed me an amazing way of totally trapping your opponent when he does spin over with his leg. He actually purposely cranks the heel instead of bridging to force the person to spin over and switches his legs as the opponent spins over. Is there any way I could upload this and send you a link for your opinion? I wish I had the opportunity to come to Canada and train at your gym with you, or head out to NY and train with Eddie Cummings and John Danaher. Thanks regardless. Great post.

    Great technical video. I have mixed feelings about heel hooks; both executing or defending. so difficult to control the pressures especially on the knee, So easy to inflict real damage. Not for "sport" grappling I think? What do you think?

    • @CoachZahabi
      @CoachZahabi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin McGivern I do them all the time and never hurt anyone or been hurt myself. They key is to apply pressure gradually. At Tristar we just hold on to the heel hooks tight and apply a small amount of pressure over time. Heel hooks can definitely get a break fast and therefore should be applied with caution. Lastly always tap fast when somme is attempting a heel hook on you.

    Firas also do you think a total pressure style of passing such as a radolfo viera would be able to pressure a garry tonon or eddie cummings whose games all around are very strong but who are specialists in the sense that their leg locks are the best in the world..I ask because even in tonon or cummings loses they were attacking the entire time there is no one who has been able to completely shut down their offense and pass..if there is a style of passing to prevail against such leg attacks that a cummings, tonon, palhares what would it be and who embodies it in your mind..very interested to hear your response thank you

    @tristargym so, is it better to keep the leg as straight as possible while doing heel hooks? I'm going to assume that when doing the inverted heel hook the leg should be as straight as possible because when the tibia is laterally rotated and extended it's in a closed packed position meaning not alot of give in that position. what do you think?

    • @maartenbinda8679
      @maartenbinda8679 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      An extended knee doesn't allow rotation because its ligaments are under tension, so the heel hook must be applied to a flexed knee (otherwise the torque put on the ankle will rotate the hip instead), extension can then be added to the rotation applied to the knee joint.

Im a white belt and when the brown and black belts do the heel hooks i trust them that they know what they do but we have some white belts who use a lot of heel hooks and im not always sure wether they know what they are doing and so im a bit scared and need a defense against the leg locks, bars and hooks

    Great video as always. It seems strange to call that position "reverse sankaku" though. Did you mean to say reverse ashi garami?

    • @CoachZahabi
      @CoachZahabi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johannes Andersson Meant Inside Sankaku and your right Im not closing the Triangle on this one because sometimes you don't have the time and there woould make it a inside Ashi Garami. ; )

    • @johannesandersson9477
      @johannesandersson9477 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much of the judo derived terminology is super inconsistent. I've seen omoplata being called 'sankaku ashi garami' in some old book. And then there's all the kuzure, yoko, ushiro and whatnot-prefixed sankaku describing triangle chokes. It would probably be better to build a new terminology from scratch.

    • @sylverg5323
      @sylverg5323 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Johannes Andersson Judo newaza terminology is based on the principle in use rather than the specific technique. Take your example:
      * Sankaku means triangle (three angles) - so a technique where a triangle of some kind is used
      * Ashi means "foot" or "leg" - a technique done using the leg.
      * Garami means "entanglement", "lock"
      Sankaku ashi garami is a lock done using the leg(s), forming a triangle shape. If you think about it, you realize that this description applies as easily to an omoplata as it does to a leg lock: Doesn't matter if you attack an arm or a leg, the principle is the same.
      Now, the whole hon, kuzure, yoko, ushiro, etc. gives a bit more precision:
      * hon = classic form (of the move)
      * kuzure = variation (of the move)
      * yoko = side, or from the side
      * ushiro = backwards or from the back
      Judo terminology doesn't make sense if you think of it in terms of names for specific techniques, but it does make sense if you understand that they are describing the principles used.
      Hope this helps.

    • @johannesandersson9477
      @johannesandersson9477 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for clarifying Sylver G.
      My gripe with that is that I don't think a heelhook and an omoplata have enough in common to be put next to each other terminology-wise. An omoplata is not a 'heelhook on the arm' nor is the heelhook 'like an omoplata but on the legs'. It all ends up being confusing to someone trying to learn the art.

  • @kristianOLS
    @kristianOLS 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why are you leaning over to your opponents far side with the leg control "sankau" wouldn't it make it easier for them to spin out? My basic question is why are you on the far side as opposed to leaning over towards the other leg?

    • @CoachZahabi
      @CoachZahabi  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      kristianOLS Either way you lean there is an escape and pro and cons for either side as well. Believe it or not you can escape also by spinning in the opposite direction as well (As long as the heel is not hooked yet) Give this move a try and I think you will find you get a lot of tension on the legs.

      Blue belt and beyond. Make sure to always practice heel hooks with the intention of only tightening the grip and trying to control for 3 secs. No need to finish the hold. At Tristar if you hold the grip for 3 seconds the match is over.

      Not the word i would use but yes - heightened awareness for sure. Theres something about anything that starts messing with a knee.. you just know how weak it is and yet how vital for everyday life. You could arguably lose the use of an eye or an arm for a while and do ok enough, but a knee.. that's just all the mobility gone.

    Stop calling heel hook a bjj technique.. That is a lack of respect! all of the leglocks u use in bjj came from catch wrestling. When they developed this brasil wasn't even on the map.
