Great one! I focus on vintage and antiquarian books. My oldest is from 1525, but bulk of inventory is the past 200 years. Very few have barcodes. I don't scan, I scan with my eyes and intuition and buy, and if it is no good, im not upset. I usually do not have many that are of no worth. I'm a life long book addict haha so it helps. I tried scanning and FBA and I hated it. I've been doing (feel blessed) very, very well with Ebay and have buying paper ephemera, some art, needlepoint and embroidery, antique mirrors, etc as well and have been seeing awesome results, and the non-book material I have been selling lately have been as a result of your videos, I basically just store the info in my mind for later use, im out and see good priced stuff from your vids? Buying. thank you

excellent topic, you nailed it. The scanners dont look at old (non-bar code) books or paperbacks and there is definitely value there, esp the old sci fi books. Plus paperbacks are easy to ship!
thanks, always blows my mind when you show categories i dont know as well. i do pick up books mostly without scanning, just going by some basic rules that have worked for me, i dont always win but definetly wouldnt have picked up a harrypotter paperback and thought "yep thats an easy 5k"

Great info, I find lot's of great books at my local good will outlet. They just dump them into a big blue bin and let people dig through them. Some of my best finds have been in the already picked over bins because I dont scan, I look for the unusual, or specialty books, CD's, and DVD's. I once found two books listing serial numbers of vintage firearms, paid a quarter each, and they sold for over $200 each. Nothing on the scale of the books in this video, but still a pretty nice return on investment. I sell a lot of local history books as well, not big money, unsually $15 to $20 a pop, but smalls add up to. I will be paying more attention to those old paperbacks from now on as well.
Great information! I'm constantly scouring the internet for new tips on sourcing books, and rarely do I come across things that I haven't tried or thought of. I realize that I don't often scan paperbacks or books without barcodes because I'm usually pressed for time. After watching this I'm convinced that I should change up my strategy a bit. I'll make sure to set aside days where I look for those categories specifically. Especially at places I already frequent and know other sellers scan. I'm thinking of hiring my first assistant scout soon, and as I train them it will allow me to experiment when we go out in pairs. Thanks so much!

This is the perfect place to test your methods, because it's always filled with other sellers scanning. And I've also heard they take all the quality books out in the backroom. Well, I found 2 vintage paperbacks with no isbn's, and behold. Both resell for $50+. You rock! Thanks again.
I found a hardback copy, in ugly condition, of "To Drop A Dime" sometime back and sold for $150. I've since found that the paperback version of the same book sells for over $100 as well.
Dang, I wish I had seen this video before I hit up two straight weekends of community garage sales. Walked right by bin after bin of paperback books including many that were in the "free" boxes. Never again. :-)

I just watched this video for the third time and taking some notes and sure appreciate your production value and the research that you’ve done over the years Don. Yes I see those barcode scanning people they drive me crazy I used to have yard sales occasionally and those people would stop by and they’re not looking at the cover of any book or CD or DVD simply scanning they almost look like some kind of a deranged Walmart checker who just scans the code and puts it in the shopping bag, some of those scanner people are almost like zombies, they remind me of the super aggressive antique dealers that would always show up an hour before any yard sale started. You know especially with the estate sales are like vultures it swoop in while the kale is still fresh. Pardon the metaphor. When I get to a really big thrift store especially when I’m on a road trip and I only have maybe half an hour and there’s thousands of books I had for the paperbacks first. I’ve really gotten good at scanning with my eyes to look for old Dell paperbacks, certain mystery series, pulp novels, and other sensationalism paperback books. I also scanned the shelves looking for that unmistakable gold logo of a few different publishers, this way I can visually scan with my eyes through hundreds of books in just a few minutes and then start pulling the ones I am considering buying. If it’s a thrift store that is having some sale day like fill a bag with paperback books for five dollars, I just start stuffing them in bags and not wasting time looking at each individual book. I’m always hoping I will find that ultra rare paperback book called “Marihuana” (note the vintage spelling) and another one called “opium den”. Hi Don, Curious if you’ve made a video about Advance Publications, Advance Copies, Review Copies. I have bought and resold several rare advanced pressings, usually they’re plain rapper and no illustration on the cover and they often have many typos and other things that have not been edited out yet. It’s a weird market, I’ve had ones that I buy for a dollar and they only resell for $12. Others that I bought for $.50 and they sold for nearly $100. I know it has to do partly with the author and how many of the advanced early pressings there were. These are pre-first editions.
I'm a bit of a paperback collecting expert. A couple of points. Anything in fine condition , 1st printing , by Jim Thompson, will go for hundreds. One book that can still be found in the wild is Star Wars, first printing. They printed the paperback before the movie. A fine copy will go for about 500. Vintage horror anthologies in paperback are doing well. Gold Medal paperbacks in fine condition bring about 20 bucks each. A few are worth about a thousand (Dark Wings Has My Angel).

Do people buy books with library labels on them? I bought these at my library book sale, very good condition other than with the library sticker either on the spine or on the inside page.
I have never heard this stuff about books and I am a senior. I am also a bookworm. Is there others like you that do paperback books? Hardbacks? I am such an introvert that I never gave it thought before now. I also raise goats.
Not sure why having a bar code on the books is preferable. I have a collection of old paperbacks (mostly SF) from the 50's, none of which have bar codes. (I also have many many boxes and boxes of books of all sorts that were the entire stock of an old bookstore that no longer exists, but have little time to invest in auctioning them off. Kind of frustrating.)
I use cat litter or loose fish filter carbon media. Set on a brick or block in a sealed container. Let set like that for a month. Usually takes care of 80-90% of the smell. One smell you can’t get ride if is mold, since the mold feeds on the paper and binding glue.
Who buys these books? Ebay? I have over 2000 (mostly hardback first editions) and over 1500 Little Golden books. Many are First Edition. Also many other children’s books.

Obviously one has to have a good knowledge of specific books and authors in order to make a decent profit.
