Today's video is all about how to remove overexposed hot spots in Photoshop.
There's nothing more frustrating than trying to fix overexposed areas of a photograph, but in this Photoshop tutorial I'll teach you how to do this via a really simple process.

Great technique & clear teaching method. Kayleigh, can you explain why you have "transfer" selected for your Pressure Tablet pen settings, & also if u have a video on your pen pressure settings for retouching in general if you have an Intuous Wacom tablet like I do. I find all brush settings can be overwhelming sometimes. Thanks.
Thanks so much! Transfer is selected so there will be more pressure sensitivity with the pen, and there is more of a gradual stroke, not so heavy. I’d love to do a video on some Wacom tablet settings, I’ll definitely add it to my requests list! 😊

No worries! It really depends on how severe the hot spots are. I always try to remove them as much as possible when doing raw processing, but if that's not possible I would then move on to using this technique in Photoshop. 🙂

Hello do you known why “apply image” option on layer 2 is greyed out on me? Thank you
I have an element that I'm trying to reduce the exposure on, but my biggest problem is that it is a crocheted flower that has been photographed and extracted. In this case, the highlights in the yarn strands are mixed in with the darker colors, so there isn't an easy way to do this. This crocheted flower has more of a plastic effect and I cannot figure out how to reduce the highlights and make it look more matte, without reuining the intriquite detail of the yarn. Any suggesttions?

Nice video! I think if you're trying to do the high-key look, such as the sample photo I assume, it'll be best not to do this. But like everything else, intent.
Thanks! And no definitely not, this is more so for hot spots on the image and smaller detail areas that need correcting. 😊
Why not use a 2-3 luminosity masks + curves from Brightest Highlight down, and you can control the opacity + adjustment on each plus its faster. The problem with working on the bottom layer of frequency separation or painting in between (sampling the bottom layer) is that you have now narrowed down the colour and luminosity range of the subject and very quickly its going to lose dimension and become flat.
I actually disagree with this, (even though luminosity masks are AMAZING for so many aspects of photo retouching.)
However, I do tend to find using adjustment layer options on overexposed areas of an image can be futile, especially when there's no more colour/detail left to bring back, it tends to look grey/unsaturated or 'off' in the highlights.
I prefer a more manual approach with using the brush tool and sampling, as it allows me to build colour where I want it on the hot spots and have full control.
BUT, this option is definitely not ideal for an image that is mostly overexposed because as you mentioned, it can really generate a 'flat effect' with the image when overused.
Yes I mean some hot spots are too far to fix and because of the lighting they have lost the hue information as its close to white. Maybe a graft could work in bringing colour back? definitely not against the brush but have to be careful with it.
