I did what due diligence I could muster, but today's technology and internet access, I think it might be easier to scrutinize prospective purchases. I had an excellent Ohaus triple beam Dial-a-gram scale, an acid testing kit, and some books on counterfeit coins that helped me authenticate finds. I will get a Pinger Thinger soon, and possibly a Sygma for the future. Seller reputation is very important, too, IMO.
