    1. Make sure it’s on flash sync
    2. Shoot at 60th of a second
    3. Set ISO 400

      @@iganas88 so basically just don't go any higher then whatever the maximum sink speed is. Older SLRs it's typically 1/60 of a second. The slower the shutter speeds will allow more ambient light in your picture.

    Thanks for clarifying that. I have a Canon Speedlite 199A I got at the thrift store. I believe you also need to switch the flash to the corresponding color switch mode to tell the flash to lessen or intensify the flash intensity brightness along with the photo sensor, along with calculating f stop distance.

    • @Shingie

    I just received my first ever developed film photos and I was given this analog Minolta flash after I bought my Canon AT-1 at the thrift store
    Good news: both the flash and the camera works and work together (Minolta flash was corroded and I had to clean it up, but hallelujah it does work!)
    Bad news: my flash test photos are half black
    I find myself here and find the problem not even 5 minutes into the video! Thanks man, you just made life easier for a beginner who doesn't really know what she's doing (aka me lol)

    Thanks for the video very informative! However under exposing it means -1 (400-1 =800iso ) , overexposure +1 (400+1= 200iso) ! It’s weird but it’s this way

    • @abraxamovic
      @abraxamovic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was about to mention that!

    • @abraxamovic
      @abraxamovic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      For those who wonder, this is the way it works.
      400 speed film has higher sensitivity than 200 iso film and lower sensitivity than 800 iso film. 400 iso film is a relatively fast speed film (in other words, it’s quiet sensitive) which means it requires less light to have properly exposed image. 200 iso is a slow film, which means it’s less sensitive and requires more light/twice the light of 400 iso film. And the opposite with 800 iso film. It’s a high speed film, which means it’s twice as sensitive as a 400 iso film. So it requires less/half the light than a 400iso.
      Now with the over and underexposing here is how it works. The difference between the amount of light is measured in stops. To have a difference of one stop, you need to double your iso. The difference between 400 and 200 is one stop. The difference between 800 and 400 is also one stop. The difference between 800 and 200 is two stops. So you divide 800/2 you get 400, that’s one stop and then 400/2 there is another stop. For overexposure, which simply means you exposure your film to more light than what it needs, say you have 400 iso film, and you want to overexpose it by one stop or whatever reason, you deal with your film as if it’s 200 iso (which as I mentioned needs twice the light of 400), so you’re exposing your frame to twice the light than what it needs. That’s +1 stop overexposed. For underexposure, which means you expose your frame of film to less light than normal. Again, say you have 400 iso film, you want to underexpose by one stop, so you deal with your film as if it’s an 800 iso (which as I also mentioned needs half the light of 400 iso), this way you’re exposing your film for 1/2 the light than what it needs. That’s -1 stop underexposed.

    Thank you so much for this video. I've been wondering how to use an external flash for a long time. This will give me a good foundation to experiment.
    I was wondering if you might consider producing a second video on this subject. I think it would be helpful to put up a picture of the flash on the right-hand side of the screen and use arrows to refer to what you're talking about. This would allow me to better understand what you're saying. Also, even though you dumbed it down, I'd like to see an even more dumbed down version. Like, take a picture with the flash while talking about everything you are taking into consideration. Go step by step.
    Also, how does bounce flash work? Do you compensate in any way?
    Great video, though. It's very helpful, and I'm very appreciative that you made it.

    Some of these flash units can actually tell you if you are going to have a good exposure with your chosen settings after firing the test button. Usually it says something like exposure ok. So far that indicator light is not failed me. And I like any flash that can bounce the light off the ceiling especially when photographing cats or dogs.

    All Canon Speedlites of the A or T Series along with third party flashes of the SCA system (SCA 310 required for Canon A Series) will set the flash sync shutter speed automatically. With the A-1 and Speedlite 199 and 299T you could choose "slow sync mode". That allows sync speeds slower than the original shutter speed (1/60). The swith is on the upper front side under the reflector.

    • @robertknight4672
      @robertknight4672 ปีที่แล้ว

    when you want to overexpose/underexpose a shot, do you change the aperature setting on BOTH the light meter AND the camera, or just on the camera? I realize that lowering the aperature number on the camera (i.e. decreasing the F stop) increases the exposure, but how does lowering the aperature number on the light meter change the intensity of the flash? does it make it more or less intense?

  • @nickfanzo

    Back in the “good old days” we had to spend money on rolls of film to test our flash settings to see how they worked. Then develop and go to the enlarger to see if the pictures came out ok or not. Some were pretty random and amazing, some were right and boring 😂
    But Tri-X used to cost me .50 cents a roll. 🤣

    • @Shingie
      @Shingie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      - I’m not sure and I haven’t tried it. I don’t think the auto aperture will work because the communication between the flash and camera isn’t modern. A digital flash can read the aperture but these are pretty manual and analog, I’d just be safe and do it manually. Doing it manually can also inspire more creative intention and playfulness as well which can give a project more character if done well.
