    Fun fact; the legislative buildings in Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba were all built at about the same time. This led to the Provinces trying to one-up the others, which ended up with Sask as the winner. It’s a beautiful building in person.

    I used to live in Victoria. There are lightbulbs all along the lines of the Parliament Buildings that light up every night and adds to the grandeur of the building and the Inner Harbour.

    As a Canadian I feel seen. As an Ontarian I feel salty our flag was ranked dead last and Quebec's first (rivalry) 😉. And as an Ottawan who lives down the road from Parliament, it's too bad it didn't get featured.
    This is just good-natured teasing (we're way too polite up here to leave rude comments on somebody's work). I've been following your channel for a little while now and I always get a little excited when you mention Canada. I'm so glad you dedicated an entire video to us, and I look forward to your future Canadian content!

    Love this! Is it possible to do a Mexico State flag countdown now?

    • @MikeV8652
      @MikeV8652 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Only seven of the 31 Mexican states have official state flags, all adopted in the 21st century. People dead-set on a cloth state symbol often unofficially display the state coat of arms on a white field, and a few states' laws permit such display of the arms in "flag mode" without making it an official state flag. Two state's constitutions (Baja California, Colima) prohibit any flag for the state other than the national flag. Five of the seven official state flags (Baja California Sur, Durango, Guerrero, Querétaro, Quintana Roo) have the arms on white. The other two use different backgrounds (Jalisco blue and yellow, Tlaxcala red and white).

    It occurs to me I hadn't seen most of these buildings before, except Regina. (Sidebar: your pronunciation is so on-point compared to every other non-Canadian youtuber, I suspect you of being a secret Canadian. I was hoping you'd say the city names to see if Regina tripped you up!) I gotta say, I really like those territory buildings, especially NWT. And Quebec gets a lot of enmity from the other provinces, but anyone who says their flag isn't the best is lying to themselves.

    I'm glad you ranked the British Columbia Legislature building at the top. I visited Victoria in 1997, and was enthralled by this building, walking around it twice, admiring the architecture. Having grown up in Edmonton, and having my father work less than two blocks away in the Federal Building, I spent a lot of time in the Alberta Legislature park, so I always thought it was a really nice building.

    British Columbia isn't all rainforest, only the coastal areas and about the first 100 miles into the interior before it starts to get drier. In the middle of the province you can find a couple of desert belts that extend well into central BC.
    And yes, the parliament buildings in Victoria are amazing, especially as they're situated across from the inner harbour.

    The Lababor and Newfoundland flag is likely influenced by that they were a part of the UK, not Canada, until after WW II. That also explains the relatively modern building they have as a capitol.

Back when the team was starting out the owner was on a business trip and came across some green uniforms that were cheap, so he bought them and that became the team color.

    I've visited British Columbia a few times, and have toured their Parliament building. It is lovely, and in the evening it's lighted.
    On my tour of the building, I asked the guide about the flag. I realize that the setting sun is indicative of the western geography. However, I've heard of the saying: "The sun never sets on the British Empire." Of course they're part of the "Commonwealth," now. But, the guide was funny in answering me ... she said: "We don't talk about that." ;)

    A note about the Prince Edward Island flag, you probably should've looked for a different version, maybe the one from Wikipedia. Their flag is a banner-of-arms and I am unsure the government of PEI has anything in place to say what version of the flag is correct, so all it has to be is similar to the coat-of-arms and that'd be why you have a massive range of quality for the flag online. New Brunswick also has this issue, but because that government has their flag on a provincial website of their symbols the effects are less common. I assure you they do not use that version in PEI! A little surprised you just assumed the government would fly that.. child's scribbling.. but it's fine.
    If you liked the design, then it should probably have been a little higher on the list, but what's done is done.. ah well.
    P.S. fun tidbit.. the New Brunswick flag you included was actually incorrect. Sort of. The actual flag we fly doesn't have the blue tongues and claws, but some stranger from Wikipedia decided that "well, the flag is a banner-of-arms, and the coat-of-arms has blue claws and tongue on its lion rampant, so let me just get my paint bucket tool.. that should be fine, right?" when actually they just didn't check the provincial website.. where the flag, in its SVG glory, has no blue claws or tongue. And hell, neither does the coat of arms, so that poor, well-intentioned soul was really misled!

    This was fun to watch; the only one I've seen in person is the one in Ontario, which has a beautiful Romanesque design, captured well by your picture. I really like the one in Yukon, too. Fun fact: in east central Ohio, along the West Virginia border, there's a small museum in an old school building with all kinds of Lego constructions (they don't call themselves the "Lego Museum," probably for copyright reasons). Mostly it's things like Lego ships, figures, Star Wars characters, and the like, but for whatever reason, one room has Lego models of all of the Canadian provincial parliament buildings! (I'm not sure why they have Canadian capitols and not U.S., but it is what it is.) It's well worth a stop.

    At 3:08 you mention Malamutes as the only domesticated animal on a national, state or provincial flag because they've been trained to be used with dog sleds, but there are plenty of US states with horses on the flag, like Pennsylvania, Minnesota or Kansas. And while not for transport, I think cattle count as domesticated too, so the cows on Vermont and Delaware's flags would make it onto the list, and maybe even the bison of Wyoming's flag, but a good video either way, no hate :)

    I know the video is 3 yrs old, but I just saw it for the first time. Victoria BC Parliament building ranked first, and I agree it is beautiful. The story behind the architect, Francis Mawson Rattenbury, is interesting. He had never designed anything bigger than a family house before, when he won the contest for the Parliament building design. He also designed The Empress Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise, and several other amazing buildings. He was involved in scandal and was eventually murdered in England by his chauffer, who was also his wife's lover. Very dramatic tale out of sleepy old Victoria.

    Yep, I was right, if Ontario gets the flag category in round 3 of your March Madness tournament, we are toast! However, with regards to our legislature building - referred to as Queen's Park, even though that's actually the name of the land it is situated on, not the building itself - the asymmetrical look is more due to the west wing having to be redesigned and rebuilt after a massive fire. Also, it's one of the provincial legislatures that has a suite for Ontario's Lieutenant Governor. (Fun fact: A previous building on that site was a lunatic asylum, so take that as you will.)
    And as for your comments about PEI? I think a feisty red-headed girl might just want to have words with your out back. ^_~

    @Geography King Howdy G. King. Like you, I'm a California native; I still live in the Golden State and I've also had the pleasure of visiting British Columbia and exploring the Parliament Building in Victoria back in May 2018. One thing I wanted to point out about British Columbia's flag is that the sun may have to do with her motto. The official motto of BC is "Splendor sine occasu" which is Latin for "Splendor without diminishment." The motto alludes to the 19th century notion that the sun shall never set on the British Empire. So, the probable reason for the sun being placed on the BC flag is probably due to the provincial motto stating that the sun would never set on the British Empire.

      I'd have to spend more time there before I do. I like to add personal experiences and first hand knowledge of places and use as many of my own photos as possible. I was actually going to be in Edmonton, Jasper, Banff, and Calgary this past September but obviously everything changed. Depending on how things are this year, part of my cross-country road trip may be going across western Canada.

    I'm sure loads have pointed it out already but we do get sun in BC year round :P

    • @MetaverseAdventures
      @MetaverseAdventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do? I live here and this province has the least Sun of anywhere I have ever lived. Summers are good, but winters are gloomy. I guess that is more a coast perspective though, and perhaps you are talking about the interior.

    Was the BC flag with regards to not seeing the sun a joke? They are not past Arctic Circle so they see it all year, unless it's raining 😛

    The funniest part about the BC parliament is that the domes are Copper, and were originally copper coloured, but oxidized very quickly and have been greenish blue ever since

    • @vananderson2895
      @vananderson2895 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They did end up replacing the copper on those domes back in the 80s. They had to buy up most of the world's supply of horse urine to artificially patina the copper so that it would match the historic look of the building.

    Absolutely spot on with the Victoria Parliament building at #1. It also helps that it is located right in the bay, as a gateway to the city. Victoria is a special place!

    As a British Columbian I feel honoured to hear Geography King say that our provincial legislature is not only the most beautiful in Canada but also in the US. The real beauty of BC however is our natural beauty, but I'll take the compliment.

    Flag wise, New Brunswick is my favorite (I mean it's a lion and a cool ship, you can't go wrong)
    Parliament wise, Quebec is my favorite (gotta love Napoleon III style architecture, the French know how to design a building)
    Canada has some very nice buildings and flags and the US could definitely learn a thing or two from them

    Merci du Québec... I know sometimes our flag is perceived as "separatist," but as a flag nerd, I admit I'll always fly it more out of just thinking it is pretty than politics.

    I think you confused BC with the Territories as BC does receive sunlight in the winter while the territories don't.

    I would have liked it if you had included the other 3 sides, esp. back, and the interiors, both of which contribute to the overall looks of the structure.

    Yo man I’m planning on taking a trip to Tennessee this summer with my friends, preferably hitting Nashville and Memphis. We are from Nj. It would be really sweet if you could make a video detailing great places to stop along the road trip from east to west Tennessee since you are from there. :)

    Ontario and Manitoba are beautiful flags, love seeing them snapping in a steady wind with a blue sky. English history and culture at it's best.

    I like the flags of Ontario and Manitoba. It doesn’t bother me that both flags are similar to the old Canadian flag. I like the British ensigns, the maple leafs and the bison. So much history is reflected in both these flags. With all this in mind you should compare Australia’s flag to the flags of Australia’s states (e.g., Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria etc.) 🇦🇺You might also consider comparing the coat of arms for Canada’s provinces and territories. 🇨🇦

    The Quebec parliament is inspired by the expansion of the Louvre in Paris, the architectural style of the Second Empire. 26 bronze statues on the facade represent the glory of the women and men ( first nation, Cartier, Champlain etc ) who marked the history of Quebec and French America. .Designed by Parisien architect , Eugène-Étienne Taché, the Parliament Building Built between 1877 and 1886 in the architectural style of the Second Empire .

    Not all of British Columbia gets a lot of rain. That's true of the mainland coastal areas, and the west coast of Vancouver island, but the east coast of VI and the gulf islands are actually fairly dry. So are many of the interior areas.
