- I made bobbin holder for lure making and fly tying. Using the template used in this video, you can make two sizes of bobbin holder.

Stainless steel wire: Diameter 1.2mm.
Plastic pipe: about 3mm in diameter.
Round beads: about 7mm.

I made some of these. Yes about choose tubing carefully. I used the plastic tubing from a Q-tip as I saw someone on the internet use it. But it kept chafing and cutting the thread. I purchased some 3/32" brass tubing. I also found some plastic beads I found at the dollar twenty-five store, and super glued them on the ends for the spool to rotate on.

I found that one way to fix the bending plastic tube using a telescope antenna(used on old tv/radio), cotton bud and lighter or solder pen.
1. dismantle telescope parts, find appropriate diameter and cut the antenna to length according to the sheet.
2.Remove the cotton from both ends on cotton bud and place the plastic tube inside of the antenna tube (it should be a bit bigger in length compared to the antenna tube).
3. Melt the rim(opening) of the plastic tube all the way to the opening of the antenna tube. Repeat on other side.
This can be done using a lighter or a solder pen.
This will create a smooth protective plastic layer inside the antenna tube as well as the opening on both ends , so your line does not snap while threading

I've made a few of these. Things to remember : Choose your tube carefully, a lot of plastic tubes seem strong, but when used they start to bend. I've used metal salmon fly tubes with some success ; Getting the end of the tube finished so it doesn't chafe the thread is the hardest thing ; It's worth impregnating the cord wraps with a couple of layers of epoxy to secure and smooth.

Ha, ha, ha! What a joke on me! But I just learned something which I really like. My grandson fly fishes so I can make some for him. I am a jeweller so have the tools and wire. Who says a 73 year old gal can’t learn new tricks? However, w/o any speaking or other reference, how would I know? Unless, fly fisher folks would and click to watch?

Thanks for the question. Sewing thread spool come in many different sizes, so I am not sure which spool will fit, but I use a combination of about 39mm wide thread spool for the big template.
anyone know where this staight stainless steel wire can be purchased? All I find is mig welding wire on spools which I don't think is what is being used here. Just curious..

That’s not a bobbin, it’s a thread spool. A bobbin for a sewing machine is a small spool that is about 1/4” thick and about 3/4” in diameter. The device you made is indeed interesting, I don’t think it’s very practical because the bent wire that extends doesn’t seem to me to have any needed purpose. At least I didn’t get that info from the start and didn’t finish watching.

It is used by fresh water fishermen. They make there own flyes. Of feathers, treads and so on. To catch salmon in rivers.

What is the length of that wire that you used for this?
I use about 35 cm of wire.The length of the wire in the finished holder is about 24cm, but I think the hard wire used in this holder needs to be at least 35 cm long because it's hard to bend when it's short.
