His reason is pretty valid. Just because you make the playoffs doesn't mean you don't have a long road ahead of you still. Reminds me of how the last season Braves and Dodgers had some of the best win records and we're dominate in the season just to messed up badly in the plays offs to teams they easily beat in the season

As a lifelong Cubs fan who watched most of Myers' appearances on TV when he was a Cubs' closer, I _never_ liked seeing the Cubs celebrating too early. I can remember them doing this one season only to bomb their way to losership in coming games. Their early celebrations made me furious at the time! "What the eff are you thinking!" Myers was completely correct! I also remember another later season when they didn't really celebrate, just lots somewhat-more-than-usual grinning, patting, and hugging, then returning to game faces walking off the field. It was clear to me they'd realized the folly from that early celebration season before.

It’s worth noting that the Mets lost to the Dodgers in the NL playoff that year. So yeah, he had a point.

Maybe if the rest of the Mets had been as dedicated as Myers, they wouldn't have choked in the NLCS that season, despite Myers' excellence in that series (2-0, one hit allowed in 4.2 IP over three appearances).
I do think anyone who was around at the time would remember Randy Myers very well. As you said, he was one of the best short relievers of his era. If you say his name to me, though, I remember him as the leader of the "Nasty Boys," the outstanding Reds bullpen that led them to the 1990 championship. The Mets may have made fun of him after they traded him, but I think Randall K. got the last laugh in that one.

I think that Randy Myers’ refusal to celebrate because he wanted to get his workout in was a more legitimate reason than Walter Payton’s refusal to celebrate after Super Bowl XX. Payton decided to pout because he failed to score a touchdown in SB XX. I think the fact that Walter Payton had finally won a Super Bowl as he was getting near the end of his career should have meant something to him.

Steve Carlton “celebrated” the Phillies winning the 1980 World Series by taking champagne to the trainer’s room. He did so because, even in that moment, he didn’t want to talk to the media.

Joe Nuxhall conducted an interview with Randall Kirk Myers on WLW-AM 700's Star of the Game after a Reds win over the Padres in San Diego in 1990. One of the funniest things I've ever heard because Myers treated is as if it was a WWE interview and addressed the Ol' Lefthander as "Mr. Nuxhall" in a similar vein as Jesse Ventura or Macho Man Savage.

This is very similar to what happened 2 years later in terms of weirdness when Napoli won the Italian Serie A title. While most of the team were celebrating, one of Napoli's top players Brazilian Alemao was heading to the hospital. This was because during the title clinching game vs Atalanta, an Atalanta supporter threw a coin at point blank range at Alemao's head, causing a massive gash. This also led to a massive brawl in the stands between Napoli & Atalanta supporters where 150 people were arrested & 30 were injured. To make this situation even crazier, none of Alemao's Napoli teammates visited him in the hospital as they were too busy celebrating with the people of Naples. However Alemao was completely okay with this as he understood what the title meant to the people of Naples. He even said that if it wasn't for the injury, he would have celebrated with the team. The 1990 title would be the last one for Napoli as things would quickly go downhill both on and off the field. It wasn't until last week when Napoli won this season's Serie A title that they would be champions of Italy again.

I never understood why the wild celebration for clinching the division while there is still two weeks left in the season and a league championship series still left to do. Back then there was only two divisions not three like now. Add to that wild card teams to play who can possibly take you out. I would tone it down until we won the NLCS or ALCS. One reason I dislike the Wild Card is that a team who has earned the chance to play in the League champion series can be taken out in a 5 game series playoff that are as is so oft quoted, "Playoffs are a crap shoot". They might not have played for several days or just having a bad week, but in baseball no one has ever won every game in a season.

If the rest of his teammates cared a little less about partying, the Mets could have been a dynasty. One WS and 2 divisions in the 80s with that talent is shameful. I remember Rusty staub telling Keith Hernandez pretty much the same thing on a Mets broadcast several years back. Gooden missed the 1986 parade because he was at his drug dealers house….

looking at his stats, myers didn't hurt until 1999, about a decade after those comments about him working out were said about him.
of course, the padres (who had his contract at that point), probably didn't care much for him trying to comeback, since they would rather take the insurance and pay him $3 million to stay home than try to comeback and have to pay him his full pay.
should also look into what he did for terry leach, making sure his friend got a ring for the 1986 world series when the mets weren't going to do it, and calling their bluff when they told him they'd only issue him one if randy paid half of it (need to remember, in 1987, a rookie only made 68k a year, and they billed him 5k for it. randy just admired the guy and also terry helped him out while in the minors).
shame his arm went out on him at age 35, had it not, padres probably trade him in 99 to someone who needs a closer, he gets over 400 saves, good chance he retires as all time leader in saves, and after that, who knows?
