  • OM NAMAH SHIVAYA
Before changing the world we have to change ourselves.
Shiva embodies Dhyan and Nartana. He meditates and he dances. He is contemplative and joyful. What a contrast.
How often do we find ourselves uttering these 5 syllables = na_ma_shi_va_ya?!
The next piece is an invocation using these pancha-akshar into a stotra (shloka) written by Aadi Shankaracharya, in praise of the highest in an individual - our own Shiva tatva - the all-knowing; all-wise within each one of us - that which represents the 5 elements of nature -Bhumi, Jal, Agni, Vayu, Akash.
The name Shiva means auspicious. He is the symbol of self-sufficiency.
Shiva’s physical manifestation has deep symbolism - look out for these in the dance.
    Nagendra Haaraya.
    Raga- Mishr Bairagi
    Taal - Khemta

Before changing the world we change ourselves. This is how the MC introduces the piece. What follows is the dancer's commentary and enactment of the symbolism in the stotram gives goosebumps of the esoteric concepts of energy and creation. Following the commentary is the dance and I have no words to describe. The dance is memorable, a combination of grace, skill, and extraordinary beauty. That Odissi can be so beautiful in giving such a scope for innovation and expression. The sculpted poses will remain in memory long after. A dancer who feels every bit of the stotram with mind and body is a blessing. 🙏

One of the finest dance performances on Shiva Panchakshara Strotam. More than the dance, Madhuri's effort to make the Strota understand in the English language with graceful lyrical movements at the beginning was unique and innovative. The singer should have also sung the "Phalastuti" part of the Strotam at the end: "Panchaksharmidam Punya yaha Pathecchibansanidhow Shivalokamabapnoti Shivena Saha Modate".

Thank you so much. The song is an original recording done by the choreographer and maestro Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and music by Bhubhaneshwar Mishra. Maybe they felt this particular part of the strotra was best communicated through dance. Thanks for the appreciation.
