  • Here at www.TimberTiny.co.za we are love finding easy solutions that allow us to simplify. The solutions we find to simplify our world beating range of Tiny Houses we share with you here so that you may be free to use them as you see fit.
    Building a rain water harvesting system normally takes a complicated range of fittings brackets screws and masonry anchors.
    But very often the same objective can be achieved using only 75 mm diameter PVC down pipe and elbow fittings.

    That’s really simple, easy to do especially if you have old pipe, and absolutely ideal for chickens where you might not have a water pipe. Genius idea fella, and it’s thanks to people like you putting these ideas out there that, slowly, some of us are beginning to make a difference.

    At first I wasn't going to continue to watch then realized that's exactly what I need for my off grid cabin, my problem was I had to come up with a idea that would catch water
    in the summer in Montana for my showers that I could easily remove when I left. The heavy snows would wipe out any rain gutter. Thanks so much.

    Nice gutter mod. From years of experience in the rainwater harvesting industry, a basic calculation of 1mm of rainfall per 1m2 of roof area ~ 1L of water harvested.
    Coop roof catchment ~ 3m2
    Average annual rainfall~ 650mm
    Potential rainwater harvested ~ 1960L
    Drum holds 200 L so it could fill this almost 10 times per year. If your chickens consume 6L total per day ~ 2160L pa then you are pretty close. Put a lid on drum to minimize evaporation and mosquitoes. Make sure gutter has fall to drum or it could stagnate. Consider adding on extra drum 👍🏻

    Got a shed shop with a diy urinal in the corner. Tired of having to refill the 2 gal flush tank all the time. Sheds got a 20 foot metal roof and I have an old 50 gal barrel. Thanks for sharing. This is just what I needed.

    The amount of rainwater one can harvest is proportional to the *footprint* that the roof covers, not by the total area of the roofing material.

    I would have liked to see how it works when it rains or just put a hose on the top to see it in action. It looks like a lot of the water won't go into the pipe. I'll do a test myself because this is a really great and simple Idea. I spent like six hours cutting up one of those tubes in half and putting it on one side of my coop. But if your idea works, heck, I'll take that off and redo the whole thing! Thank you!!

    • @valle6o727
      @valle6o727 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't doubt it'll go into the pipe. That's the purpose of the channels on the roof. Valleys for water.
      I'm a little more on the side of efficacy.
      I live in the rainiest town in the US and even a small system like that is likely to overflow and waste a lot.
      Still going to try it though!

    Curious if you have any ideas on how to install gutters on a standing carport that has metal sides all the way down to the ground on both sides? The carport is closed in on three sides, the back wall and both sides walls go all the way to the ground. I would like to install a rain catchment system on it but am unsure of how to go about putting gutters up. The gutters would have to be on the two side walls due to the slant of roof (A frame stylish,just not as pronounced ) but there is no lip to attach them to. Any ideas would be lovely

    • @TimHewitt-Coleman
      @TimHewitt-Coleman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary, what I have done is to simply block the one end of the pipe - so it can only come out one side. For longer runs I am sure the eaves would need to be set out at falls.

    I really like the guttering solution. But the water butt set up is all wrong. The outlet pipe or tap should be positioned nearer the base of the water butt. Why because once the water level falls below the outlet pipe as in this case, placed near the top of the butt the water in the tank is trapped and has no outlet to flow out of.

    • @TimHewitt-Coleman
      @TimHewitt-Coleman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carol - thanks for that - but what I did not show you was that there is of course an outlet at the bottom (and one at the top as an overflow)
