I stumbled upon your channel and I'm really enjoying it so far. My only suggestion- don't be afraid to make longer videos. Look at Big Tractor Power; they have 20-30 minute videos of tractors and combines harvesting corn or wheat and it doesn't get boring. Your farm is a bit more unique and I'd love to see more. I'm sure I'm not alone.
So my problem is squirrels. How do you keep your orchard squirrel-free? They just destroy my almond tree way before harvest time. Any pointers other than sitting out near my tree with a .22, which I am considering?
As i sit here eating blue diamond almonds....(no kidding either), now i know why they are so expensive lol... New to the channel btw. I saw you in the vids on farmer 2 farmer and some of the instagram rants with the other dudes i follow. I think Meredith gave you a shout out so I had to subscribe. Good content. Keep it up man.
Thanks! Yep, it takes a lot of time, work, and especially money to get almonds to your table. Meredith is such an awesome friend. Thanks for subscribing!
As long as you own the land outright, have access to cheap and plentiful water (not just ground water), then I would say you are good to go. Prices aren't great right now so if you can grow some corn, hay, silage etc. I would personally go that route for awhile first!
I live in Perth, Australia and if I had the room in my yard I would put in several almond trees. Before I did some building we had an almond tree that produced hard shell almonds. This is some years ago and I don't know what variety almonds they were. Similarly when I was a kid we had an almond tree in our yard and it too produced hard shell almonds. I didn't care too much for raw almonds then, but 55 years later I have (Aussie) almonds for breakfast every day. Australia after California is the second biggest almond producer. I like the Nonpareil and Carmel varieties, but fairly recently tried the slightly larger Monterey almond variety. I didn't think it was nearly as good as the other 2 varieties, but I understand everyone has different taste so perhaps some people grade it highly. I am wondering what you think if you have tried the Monterey, which probably you have and maybe are growing that variety. Several years ago I considered buying a property with several small orchards on it including almonds, pecans, apricots and some other fruits, however, there was a major highway which was planned to go through the property and that plus the fact that there would probably be large noisy freight trucks going through, I figured it would be best to consider other properties. The owner had stopped irrigating and the apricot trees were dying, although at the time I didn't know that.
You didn’t butcher the explanation that bad. Maybe since I’m a grower I know exactly what you are trying to say. Lol. You going do a segment on spraying? I notice in another video you have a electrostatic sprayer. 👍🏼. Also love the beginnings of pt 1 &2 intros.
Oh and I DO love me some Blue Diamond Almonds ....... when flying, the airline gives you a dinky little snake bag of something.... but I have my ENTIRE CAN of Blue Diamond Almonds !!! HAHAHAAHAHAH !!! LOL !!!!!
Might I say, very cute doggo in the background.

Thanks for content! It is so interesting and includes a lot of footage that is helpful for understanding the process.
Can we air layer almond trees for new rootings? I forget if I ever learned or can almond tree only grow from a germinated almond seed?
How do you deal with ground squirrels?

How long does it take to harvest your crop?
Nothing like the nuts starting to dry up.. 0:44 The nut shaker is no joke! 1:56
Does the mast change greatly from year to year?
I'm not quite sure I know what you are asking, but the yields are fairly steady year to year.
The beginnings 🤣 👏🏽
Do you fertilize the trees as other farmers fertilize crops, if so how is it done?
We either use composted manure from our poultry ranch, or use fertigation through our irrigation system.
Do you own the harvest equipment or is it done custom by a crew?
We hire custom crews but hope to get our own stuff soon!
You make me want to convert my 100 acres in WV into an almond farm.
You explain things just like me hahaha love the vids

Thanks haha! Yes, I am planning on doing a segment about spraying in the near future with the electrostatic sprayer.
