As I have gotten older I have come to love this song even more. I recall when I first heard it shortly after the album was released I cried because I thought Todd was completely leaving the music scene and was telling us goodbye. It did seem to mark a different phase of his career. I haven’t gone along with Todd on every journey but I’ve always been there waiting for him to come back around and pick me up for the next one. I love the spoken intro nod to R&B Performer Barry White who was enjoying success during era. Yet, where White was muttering silly flirt talk, Todd had something important to say. “That leaves you. You’ll have to do it.”
The references to earlier songs in the closing triggers the emotions those songs captured so well when first heard and tied that phase of his career together beautifully. “ You can say what you will about me. Talk is cheap and I don’t mind. When you lay your life down in those grooves, you know you’re bound to get scratched up some times.” Still near the top of my list of favorite song lyrics.
I love playing and singing along , although I can do neither that well. I can match him note for note for the first couple of stanzas but after that, this 63 year old voice is shredded and what comes out is nothing like I intended it or expected it to be. lol I have gotten closer to matching Edgar Winter’s saxophone parts on the guitar. I have long wondered what a remix replacing the sax parts with a guitar would have sounded like….a guest appearance by Tommy Bolin perhaps….sigh …. Those dreams… they live on forever.
For a long time I stopped listening to side one after Initiation. It took me years to find out this isn't just a blues song, but it is also a waltz, and who knows what else you might find in it.

My fav album in 70's Still got my original vinyl... Genius of expression and spirit... Waaay before his time and bold in the face of no agreement...
I have been a fan for 50 yrs at an impressionable and tender age. His music cuts straight thru to my soul. It's intense for me to listen without tears even " if it's only just a song"
This is one of those Todd songs that is so beautiful it makes me want to cry.

one of my most favoite Todd songs ever , I could not beleive it last year when he played it live on his tour , it was unreal great , not to mention Bobby on sax
In all my life the most moving experience in music. Just went thru side A again lying on the beach and tears are streaming...good thing I have sunglasses lol
What blows my mind is how Todd goes from 3/4 timing to something of a 4/4 , back to 3/4 and just melts it into 6/8. ….and then just screws with all of us and flips between them. He is just...well, ..amazing. And I'm not easily swept up.
Nothing TR does should ever blow your mind - it's just routine for genius types.

Todd ..i timeless. Watched him pl a I in Asbury Park NJ. First time I saw ajumbo torn ...It was pouring thru the ceiling.todd didn't care.best concert I ever attended..in. 63yrs. As relevant then as he is today.THE MAN! His creativity. Inspired my creativity. Thank you.
I just recently revisited this song after decades and I have played it over and over. It is so perfect!!! Thank you T.R. for your gifts of music to the world. You have made our planet a better place.

I just found out that Edgar Winter plays that killer sax in this song(also Rick Derringer git) . I've been listening to this since the week it hit the stores . I didn't pay much attention to liner notes back then . I was also lucky to see them live when they were touring this album .
And Dan Hartman on bass, all three were in the Edger Winter Group

4:36 The change here from 3/4 to 6/8 time is so subtle, it's hard to not to miss it when you aren't paying attention.

When I was younger, back when I was strung-out and on the bricks and living hand-to-mouth, this album and others of Todd's albums were the only spiritually uplifting things I had in my life. I'm 72 now, Christ, Todd must be 80 or something...we really are just flashes of consciousness who appear in the void and barely have a chance to look around at the world before we're swept away again...
There are many pieces of music that I adore but there are some that when I think about never hearing them again, it distresses me. I don't know, maybe no matter what happens after we die, music will be a part of it..that would be good.
Las canciones del señor Todd hay que oírlas muchas veces para poder apreciar todos los sonidos y esos coros que son como celestiales. Aparte de todo eso el genio Rundgren va y pinta la portada.

i was just stunned when I realized "Real Man" (1975) is the EXACT blueprint of Hall & Oates1980s hits! (I think Todd produced them in the 1970s.) (Both Todd and H&O are from Philly, and both loved that soul.)
He does have a superb voice. Doesn't get mentioned enough.
