  • Montpellier, France Walking tour 4K. October 11, 2022.
Montpellier is the eighth largest city in France, located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the south of the country, just 10 km from the Mediterranean coast. Among the sights of Montpellier, first of all, it is worth highlighting the Cathedral of St. Peter, as well as the oldest botanical garden in France (1593) and the Fabre Museum with a huge collection of works by French artists, including the Impressionists. Every year the city hosts an international wine fair.

(1:06:36) The Peyrou Terraces, Montpellier, (1767- ) , laid out by A. and E.. Giral. mark the end of an acqueduct supplying the city, itself reminiscent of the Roman Pont du Gard with its two tiers of arches. From the city, the terraces are approached from an archway (1689) on the main axis, while on the upper terrace atthe termination of an acqueduct is the so- called Chateau d Eau, a restrained triumphal arch like structure, almost square in plan with a slightly concave front; its selective Classical detailing and decoration provide the equivalent of an ancient nymphaeum.
