This isn't really old school GOTH... it's more Darkwave, Coldwave and Synthpop all into one! That being said, I like Kaelan Mikla a lot and I wish I could have been there for this show!
Well, it depends on where you are coming from. Old school Goth only existed in england. The same music would have been called Darkwave in Germany, Coldwave in France, or Deathrock/Dirge in the USA. The term Goth didn´t existed in most places during the time which we now cosider the hight of goth culture. That beeing said, the music culture in all these places was different. This makes labeling so different, especially over time. But I would also put this more into traditional Darkwave sound, coming from a Post-Punk background. This is exactly how I like it.
@@MrFusselig : You are right and yes I was referring specifically to the british old school post punk dark avant-garde underground bands between '78 until '82 that derived directly from the 1st wave of british punk rock that as you very well said it they weren't even called (or labeled) "Goth" at the time such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Southern Dead Cult (a.k.a. The Cult), Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Damned, Virgin Prunes, etc. The american Death Rock scene spawned in LA around '84 at about the same time as the british Goth Rock scene in London at the Batcave Club events on wednesdays! The german Darkwave was originated by the likes of X-mal Deutschland more or less at the same time as its british and american counterparts also having some ramifications in The Netherlands (Clan of Xymox) and Scandinavia namely in Sweden () while the french Coldwave started around '86! The Dark-Electro sub-genre evolved within Synthpop in the early mid-'80s with Depech Mode and Skinny Puppy (Canada) following in the footsteps of Gary Numan from the late '70s! The other subgenres arrived later: Industrial, Gothic Metal, EBM, Minimal, Deathwave (Death Rock Revival), Psychobilly (a.k.a. Gothabilly or Horror Punkabilly), Batwave, Killwave, etc. By the early mid '90s Goth had turned from a scene INTO a TRUE subculture with many different subgenres of music that share some cultural references! Unfortunately that was also the time when goth sound and goth fashion started becoming more mainstream friendly and an ordinary mass product just to make money contrary to the innitial musical and individual originality with a DIY kind of attitude in many ways similar to punk: I used to say back in the day (circa 1985) that we Goths were just punks dressing in all black clothes, having ripped hair or deathawks, wearing dark make-up and several gothic crosses to mourne the death of Sid Vicious and the end of punk rock scene! Other thing that has got nothing to do with the real old school GOTH scene and that nowadays is very confused within the subculture is Satanism when in fact real TRUE Goths have religious freedom to choose their own particular belief system wether it's philosophical or a regular religious faith and we RESPECT the dead and admire the beauty of Churches, Cathedrals, Cemeteries, Tombs, etc. whilst satanists burn and rob them which is shameful! Yes, Goths can be christians, agnostics, atheists, etc. and yes, some Goths are satanists too but believe it or not they are a minority within the subculture because nowadays the term "Goth" is wrongly used as a wide umbrella to label distinctively different things that only happen to share some cultural references and that's why most people tend to confuse the real Goths with those goat sacrificing Black Metal twats (by the way we love animals)! Apparently Goth, Gothic and Darkly Enclined now mean the same exact thing what I don't understand and the goth fashion has BECOME utterly ridiculous with Pastel Goth (a.k.a. happy coloured Rocaille fantasy), Nu-Goth (a.k.a. teenage Harry Potter magic Cosplay), Lolita Goth (a.k.a. japanese manga/anime child look), Cybergoth (a.k.a. animated futuristic rave cartoon characters)... not to mention Vegan Goth: what's next? Vegetarian Vampires? Goth Barbie Dolls? Golden coffins? Goth rappers and Goth hip hop? (SARCASM/IRONY) The GOTH subculture is definitely contaminated by lots of poseurs who ONLY wear gothic clothes to get gorgeous goth girls and to look cool without even liking, knowing or understanding anything about the essence of our subculture: I am sick and tired of so much bullshit and so many wannabes: I FUCKING HATE POSEURS! Die POSEURS die! Oh well, I guess I am becoming an old grumpy goth vampire bat! See you someday in a graveyard nearby in the witching hour! "Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas..."
TBH, watching this feels like watching Skinny Puppy's "Ain't it dead yet?" back in the late 80's, on a VHS copy of a VHS copy. Music may be different (on a surface level), but the vibe... Industrial. Darkwave. Witch House. Just variations of pagan despair. Adding or removing an instrument or BPM doesn't change the common cultural ideals. You guys ever come across Paris XY? IMO, the best band which broke up way too soon. Search for "The Return" or "the Vigil". YW. But anyway, if we went back to 1990 and put Claus Larsen and Nina Hagen in a room together, with Peter Murphy in the control booth, the end product coulda sounded alot like this. And this isn't a bad thing, at all.

I was apprehensive when I saw the later KEXP video where they had switched to synth.
