    Bravo Peter for showing bonsai is a love and respect for working with plants and not just a reverence for style!

    Beautiful field maple. Another trick I used to do was thread grafting. To drill a hole in the part of the (live) tree you wanted a branch or leader to come from. Thread through a shoot and let it grow until it closes. I felt like I was cheating but the results were fabulous. Just thought I'd pass this tip on to anyone who's maybe just starting and has been waiting for years for a shoot to grow in the right place.

      Drill a hole through? And thread a shoot, a very young one? Interesting method. Not seen that done before.

      @kappamy-heta7951 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you drill a small hole just to fit the shoot or a bigger one? And do you scrab the bark of the shoot or just put it in the hole? With leafes on the shoot or without? Thanks for answers

    • @jonawolf8023
      @jonawolf8023 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have heard of that. it was described to me that you have to cut into the bark on the branch to connect the cambium of trunk and branch and fix it with wedges. If that works without cutting the bark, I'll try that.
      an easier method is to cut the bark at the junction, simply place the branch on the trunk and secure with thumbtacks. the downside is that the connection doesn't look as natural as the versin with the drill.

      @@kappamy-heta7951 Where I am I used this method with vigorous growing ash (fraxinus) trees. It was fantastic. You only needed a respectable trunk and then I'd mark where I wanted the branches to be. No guess work in waiting for shoots to grow. The hole just needs to be wide enough for the shoot to thread through. I suppose the wider the hole the longer it will take to callous over. You can take the shoot from the parent tree itself of have a seedling of the same variety , in another pot and thread it through, leaving it there for the duration of the growing season. Once I cut off the threaded graft too early ( the following Autumn/Fall) and it died back so had to repeat the process again. I got too excited. Cut the threaded graft off after it has closed over and become part of the parent tree. You'll have to decide when. Or better still, bring it to Peter! LOL. Just before buds open is the time to do this procedure and leave it for a full growing season. Possibly the following late Spring might be sufficient time for the thread to have become part of the tree. If unsure leave it for another season. Scraping the bark of the thread would probably be beneficial but with vigorous threes like elms, maples, ash, you should be able to get away without scraping. Experiment and see how it goes. You can't damage the parent tree as the hole you make closes over. I'd leave the leaves off the shoot you're trying to thread. But can't see it doing any harm if you left them. Hope this helps.

      @@luigiluigi2098 The thinner the shoot , the smaller the hole needs to be so quicker grafting time. I use to wire shoots from the parent tree into position so I could then just thread the end part through. The part of the graft that went through was unwired.. Check out my reply below . Give it a go.

    Oh no, don't remind me of last years summer. I've lost a tree and half the crown of another. This year all of my trees are setup in shade only, no direct sunight at 38°C ever again.
    I've attempted a tanuki-like appearance with the tree that had half the crown left, by wrapping the new shoots around the old growth. I like the look of it, but it will take a little more time until it stops being noticable.

    Hi Peter, for the field maple could you have chosen the option to show the dead leader like a stag head oak that occurs naturally when the leader dies, I have thought about this for one or two of my trees where the leader has died but never really seen any examples of it on deciduous bonsai

    i don't think hawthorn wood will last long enough to look good as a "tanuki" in the long run. as a guide to form a new trunk and over dead wood transition bevels i think the idea is brilliant.
